New York, NY, December 7, 2009 – Megastars from the worlds of video games, Hollywood, music, sports and more will gather to pay tribute to the outstanding achievements within the video game industry during the past year at Spike TV’s 7th Annual “Video Game Awards 2009.”  Broadcasting in over 180 territories and countries, the VGAs will be a global celebration of all things gaming as it premieres LIVE on Spike TV Saturday, December 12 at 8:00 PM, ET (tape delay west coast). 

 

Academy Award™ nominated Actor Jake Gyllenhaal will be on hand to dole out the night’s most prestigious honor, Game of the Year, as well as to present  a special look at his upcoming Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, future blockbuster “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.”

 

Grammy Nominated rapper and gamer Snoop Dogg will be performing at this year’s live event.

New York, NY, December 2, 2009 – The biggest night of the year for the video game industry just got bigger!  Today Spike TV confirmed that three highly-anticipated new games – Electronic Arts’ Medal Of Honor, Ubisoft’s Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, and Microsoft’s Crackdown 2 will premiere LIVE at Spike TV’s “Video Game Awards 2009,” Saturday, December 12 at 8:00 PM ET. 

 

The VGAs – which recognize the best games of the year and preview the most anticipated titles of the future – will feature the first-ever look at EA’s reboot of MEDAL OF HONOR with a world-premiere trailer. For the first time in the franchise’s storied 10-year-history, MEDAL OF HONOR is leaving the World War II theater and putting players in war-torn Afghanistan.  The game introduces the Tier 1 Operator, a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else in the world can handle. 

 

Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands™ is the latest installment in the critically-acclaimed franchise and marks the return to the Prince of Persia® Sands of Time storyline. Scheduled for release in May 2010, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands™ will feature many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series, as well as new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand.

 

Crackdown 2 is the sequel to one of the most innovative releases in recent memory. Ten years have passed since the Agency first eliminated the gangs in Pacific City. Actor Viggo Mortensen made an appearance at the 2009 AFI Fest to premiere his latest film “THE ROAD”. Based on the Pulitzer Prize Winning book by Cormack McCarthy, the film tells the story of a man and his son fighting to survive after an apocalyptic event.

“THE ROAD” is beautifully directed by John Hillcoat (THE PROPOSITION) and features amazing shots by cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe (NEW MOON).

A very moving and thought-provoking story, the film features fantastic performances from Viggo Mortensen and young Australian actor Kodi Smit-McPhee as the boy. While the film does feature hard and disturbing subjects, it is such a beautiful film that it should find it’s audience and be nominated for some statues come awards season.

The “Hollywood Least Wanted 3D” exhibit is Schmeidler’s latest work in 3D and will feature anaglyphic 3D photographs of dogs and cats “behind bars” in an effort to raise public awareness and support for the animals. Also featured at the exhibit are 3D versions Schmeidler’s “Hollywood Most Wanted” series of celebrity mugshots. Schmeidler’s work has been featured on CNN, Access Hollywood and US Weekly Magazine.

SYNOPSIS

William Shatner stars as veterinarian “Rack” Hansen in this cult film about an Arizona town infested with a horde of arachnids that turn on the humans whose insecticides have depleted their natural food supply. After livestock belonging to Rack’s friend, rancher Walter Colby (Woody Strode), fall victim to a spider attack, entomologist Diane Ashley (Tiffany Bolling) arrives and tries to help Rack deal with the crisis — but with the big county fair fast approaching, Mayor Connors (Roy Engel) refuses to let them quarantine Colby’s ranch. Soon the remaining residents of the town must barricade themselves at lodge of Emma Washburn (Lieux Dressler) lodge in an effort to save themselves from the eight-legged invaders in the ultimate man versus spider showdown.

Directed by John Bud Cardos and written by Richard Robinson and Alan Caillou, Kingdom of the Spiders was released in 1977, grossing a respectable $17 million against a $500,000 budget.

Seven CD Review

The band Seven, named after the Seven Deadly or Cardinal sins Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth Wrath Envy and Pride was formed six years ago. After a few changes in the lineup they became the musical force you hear on their self titled CD.
The CD takes you through tight, adrenaline-fueled tunes. Seven has the components to make good music with good guitar riffs with drummer Eric “Gluttony” Souza hammering the music home!
Rob “Envy” Hunter has the vocal chords to carry off the songs the way metal should be sung. He can quickly change from screams to growls to melodic signing while maintain the fast pace of the songs.
Seven brings strong song writing and catchy melodies to their CD. For me the stand out is “I Hate Myself” it is crisp, clean with a tight rhythm section that demands you move to the music.
This CD moves smoothly through the tunes with a mix of metal and a touch of techno on the side. Check out their music on MySpace.

“THE GLOOMERS” RELEASE HALLOWEEN EPISODE

The Halloween episode stars famed horror director and Evil Dead II writer Scott Spiegel, who plays himself in the cartoon.

The Gloomers series is the brainchild of Charles Mechem, who was CEO of Taft Broadcasting, which owned Hanna Barbera for over 20 years. The Gloomers includes Neal Barbera, son of Joe Barbera, as a writer. Neal Barbera wrote a number of classic Hanna Barbera scripts, including Yogi Bear and Scooby Doo and many others.

BACKGROUND AND BACKSTORY:

THE GLOOMERS is an animated series that follows the trials and tribulations of the hysterically funny heirs to misfortune, the Gloomer family. Crashing the classic Hanna-Barbera animation of the Jetsons and Flintstones with a post-modern comedy slant, the show is both a reflection and an antidote to our modern day “gloomy” outlook. We all have bad days, sometimes even the kind of day that plunges your entire life into chaos. Now, imagine if every day was like that…

Enter The Gloomers.

From generation to generation the Gloomers have endured the worst bad-luck streak in recorded history. The torch of tribulation is carried proudly by the patriarch, Dooman Gloomer, a hapless inventor who, despite his consistent failings, still holds out hope for that one elusive moment that will break the chain and let the sun shine in. Sadly, that day never, ever comes.

Dooman’s best friend, Moses, a 262 year old parrot that has been in the Gloomer family for generations, knows this all to well and amuses himself by reminding poor Dooman every chance he gets.

Dooman’s wife, Lotta, stands by his side through all the explosions, fires, electrocutions and falls that happen with common frequency.

Their detached son Junior has inherited the Gloomer luck, but since he has retreated to the basement in his helmet, he does not yet realize the magnitude of his potential misery. His only friend is a Marcel Marceau-like spider named Cunape.

Somehow, the curse passed over little sister Notta who, oblivious to the doom and despair that surrounds her, floats effortlessly through life on a cloud of hope that always avoids the dark rain cloud that follows the rest of the Gloomer clan, which also includes a clinically depressed dog, Lugubrious, and a robotic cat named Despair.
Aimed at the kid in all of us who wishes they could simply laugh away bad luck; aimed at anyone who ever felt that they were not very different from Charlie Brown or Wile E. Coyote.

The Gloomers reminds us that no matter how bad your day was, chances are The Gloomers was worse. Kids, teens and adults will be attracted to the show’s bizarre sense of comedy and unfortunate circumstances, but it is the universality of the characters and the Gloomers unconditional love for each other that will secure the series a fiercely loyal following.

PDE Uses Adobe Flash Platform to Create Unique Interactive Experience Across Multiple Platforms

Los Angeles (October 27, 2009) – Circle of Eight, Paramount Digital Entertainment’s (PDE) original supernatural thriller, produced in association with Mountain Dew’s Green Label Studios, premieres today exclusively on MySpace. Three episodes will launch the10-part series, which combines unique elements of gaming and social media to propel the story forward.

Viewers can tune into MySpace at www.myspace.com/circleof8 now to watch the first three episodes of the series. Episodes four and five will be available on November 3, and each week following one of the remaining five episodes will be available to viewers on MySpace through the finale on December 8.

Circle of Eight tells the story of a young woman who moves into an historic building, The Dante, where she encounters an assortment of neighbors harboring a mysterious secret that unravels in a chain of deaths and supernatural interactions. Multiple levels of interactive content enhance the audience’s connection with Circle of Eight, including hidden clues, an online and mobile game, and exclusive material that can be unlocked through game play.

Along with distributing the series, MySpace’s social-networking features allow viewers to share and embed the content, interact with the series through social gaming and content, and broadcast their thoughts via forums and commenting.

Following the online run on MySpace, Circle of Eight will be available for rent exclusively at participating BLOCKBUSTER® stores, as well as by mail and through BLOCKBUSTER On Demand®. The full-length film will have additional scenes and a surprise alternate ending.

Mountain Dew plays a critical role in the Circle of Eight storyline. One of the characters in the series joins the Green Label Art community and creates a unique, custom-designed Green Label Art bottle. The bottle is also featured in the online game where it unlocks deeper mysteries in the Circle of Eight storyline. Green Label Art is Mountain Dew’s limited edition series of collectable aluminum bottles designed by a select group of artists from the world of contemporary art and culture.

In addition to its organic product integration into the story of Circle of Eight, Mountain Dew is promoting the series at stops on the Dew Action Sports Tour, in movie theaters and on television.

Circle of Eight creators produced a unique interactive experience for viewers across operating systems and devices using the Adobe® Flash® Platform and Creative Suite® 4 software. Adobe tools and technologies were used in the majority of the workflow stages for both the filmed entertainment and interactive production, including a mobile application and gaming widget. PDE is able to deliver the multiple interactive elements of Circle of Eight to viewers across devices using Adobe Flash Player and Adobe® AIR®, because of efforts by the Open Screen Project, an industry-wide initiative led by Adobe and supported by PDE and close to 50 other industry leaders, to enable people to engage with rich Internet experiences across any device, anywhere.

A Milchan/Van Eyssen production, Circle of Eight, stars DJ Qualls (Road Trip, All About Steve) and rising stars Austin Highsmith and Ryan Doom. Milchan/Van Eyssen is the collaboration between producer Alexandra Milchan (Righteous Kill, Street Kings) and director David Van Eyssen (BMW Film Series The Hire). The company is located at Paramount Pictures with a first-look producing deal for digital media with PDE, the first of its kind for the studio.

Circle of Eight is directed by Stephen Cragg (Reaper, ER, NCIS), written by Dave Brewman and Brian Horiuchi, produced by Alexandra Milchan and David Van Eyssen and executive produced by Jamie Boscardin Martin (production supervisor for Bruno, Borat). Michael Lohmann (Boston Legal, The Guardian) served as director of photography and April Webster (Star Trek, Mission Impossible 3) and Scott David served as casting director. Hollywood United Methodist Church in association with the Tectonic Theatre Project hosted “THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER, AN EPILOGUE” today to a sold out crowd in Hollywood. The play focuses on the hate crime killing of openly gay student Matthew Shepard in Laramie in 1998, and how the town and the world have changed since then. The new version of the play includes interviews with Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson the two men who tortured  and killed Shepard .

The staged reading drew a sell-out crowd who came to see stars Zachary Quinto, Pauley Perrette, James Cromwell, Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Julie Benz, Lisa Edelstein, Christian Clemenson, Barrett Foa, Helen Shaver and Michael Weatherly. The play was moving, funny, and touching – striking a nerve with those in attendance. With President Obama saying he will sign The Matthew Shepard Act (which adds sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability to the existing federal law prohibiting hate crimes) into a law next week, “THE LARAMIE PROJECT” could not be more timely.

CHICAGO PRODUCER J. NOIZE WILL BE  FIRST ARTIST TO DROP — YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK,  FROM SOUL ELECTRIC RECORDS SCHEDULED  FOR FALL 2009

soul electric Legendary House Music producer Roy Davis, Jr. and long-time ally Los Angeles area club promoter and producer Juan Hoerni (pronounced Her-nee) have joined forces to create Soul Electric Records. Soul Electric, with offices based in Chicago and Los Angeles, will feature R&B, house, hip-hop and rap artists, along with special mix tape and dance remix projects. Soul Electric’s first release is Young, Gifted & Black by Chicago native J. Noize, who has a direct personal relationship with Davis and Hoerni.

Soul Electric Records is a logical extension of a 10-year professional and personal friendship between Davis and Hoerni. Davis is a highly respected house music producer and DJ hailing from Chicago, with an extensive production and dance remix track record involving virtually every key artist in urban music since the early 90’s. Hoerni is known for putting on innumerable concerts and parties throughout the greater Los Angeles region, as well as creator of Cha Cha Project Recordings.

“I had been doing work for a lot of different artists, and I reached a point where I wanted to do something different, more commercial…when it came to starting Soul Electric, I was looking for a partner. When I brought it up to Juan, he was anxious to be a part of it and said, ‘Whenever you’re ready to start, I’m ready’,” explains Davis about the creation of Soul Electric.

Davis and Hoerni pored over the details of their vision of Soul Electric Records and found a convenient first artist in Davis’ own brother, 24-year-old producer and rapper J. Noize. J. Noize (Jason Davis) had his own buzz in Chicago by virtue of winning various beat battles, including the influential Dynamic Producers 2005. The project, Young, Gifted & Black, is scheduled to hit retail and most major music download services in fall 2009.

Young, Gifted & Black bucks trendy “me-first” fare and offers insightful messages that emphasize family, community and a way out from a seemingly endless cycle of poverty, crime and corruption. The first single “Find Him” revolves around finding a positive direction in life and features the vocal strength of veteran R&B diva Terry Dexter. Prior to the release of “Find Him,” a remix tape is planned to help create a street buzz and awareness of Soul Electric Records and its roster, including J. Noize, hip-hop/R&B vocalist Manny and songwriter and artist D-Illa.

Davis admits to the luxury of having his younger brother J. Noize as the first artist on Soul Electric.

“The best first artist to work with was J. I worked with other artists – and there will be more artists to come – but since he was right there in my face and also putting out consistently good music, I felt he was a solid choice.”

Davis and Hoerni are Executive Producers of Young, Gifted & Black, as well as producers of several songs on the CD, while allowing J. Noize enough space to develop his musical dream. To that end, even more family is involved, including another brother, songwriter/artist D-Illa—whose soon to be released solo project is titled Products & Goods—and nephew Yung Nef (also a producer) who also contributed to the project.

Roy Davis, Jr. began his career as a DJ at the tender age of 12, and was influenced by local hometown Chicago house music spinners DJ Pierre, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Lil’ Louis and Marshall Jefferson. Davis quickly picked up the nuances of working a crowd and honed his craft to the point where he surpassed the aforementioned and rapidly became the go-to house and dance-remix producer/DJ in Chicago. Davis’ reputation spread around the world and he is now in demand in such places as Dubai, Tokyo, England, Australia and France. As his reputation grew, Davis was approached by numerous acts for his incendiary dance remixes, which have heightened visibility for the likes of Seal, Daft Punk, Jill Scott, Eric Benet, Terry Dexter, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Patti LaBelle,  and Christina Milian. In the summer of 2009, Davis released a well-received solo album, God, Life, Music, on the Chicago-based label Largetek. The experimental effort features R&B, Electronic dance, spacey hip-hop and more, with input by Chicago area artists Dexter, J. Noize, Yung Nef, XL, Manny and Erin Martin.

Juan Hoerni began his career as a publicist for a high-tech firm in Silicon Valley after graduating in 1998 from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Communications. The Mountain View, California native gravitated to music PR and concert promotion when he discovered that the high-tech field left him unchallenged.

“I used to produce radio shows at KMEL-FM and college radio stations. I took all that I learned and started DJ-ing in clubs in the area.”

A one-off house music concert booking turned into a full-time entrepreneurial adventure when Hoerni’s reputation grew as a major club event specialist. Hoerni is also the creator of Cha-Cha Project Recordings, an eclectic collection of experimental music that he wrote, produced and collaborated with several DJs, including DJ Spinna and Davis.

“I called Roy’s manager for an event I was throwing in 1999, and then I began using him all the time, because Roy knows how to get a crowd started,” Hoerni explains on how he and Davis met.

Davis elaborates, “Juan used to fly me out for weeks at a time, and I’d play at boat parties and huge warehouses that he would rent out. Our friendship grew throughout time, and then we eventually started producing records. We realized we had the same goals in common and liked the same broad range of music. So, we decided to go ahead, push the button and make it happen. It was always in the back of my head, when I was shopping J-Noize’s project around, to start a label.”

The idea of Soul Electric Records became reality in January 2009, and accelerated once J-Noize finished his solo effort.

“Soul Electric- the name itself- is not limited to hip-hop. It could be house, soul and other avenues, as long as it has substance and soul within it,” Hoerni concludes.

When I do a review I like to pick my favorite track and after listening to every track several times it is difficult to pick a favorite. Every track is perfect in a different way. The songs go from heartbreaking to the playful “Get Outta Town” with great lyrics like “It’s been one of those days for a year. “

The title song “Why Don’t You Stay” broke my heart; it is sweeps you up in her voice like the arms of a lover. The song is so beautifully sung, played and written you can “see” the song in your mind…Curtis singing. The last two people in a rooftop club. Lonely city lights in the background. A man in a uniform dancing with the woman he loves. Parting forced upon them by circumstance, the price paid for war. “a little bit longer, a little bit closer to the end of this song. “   They are alone and lonely together.

Shannon Curtis has a warm, rich voice that puts you in a dreamy mood. Every woman needs a copy of this CD.

Beautiful voice and environmentally friendly packaging, who could ask for more?

After reading over my account of “Why Don’t You Stay” I had to laugh. I am sure that Curtis has a totally different story in her head with the song, but that’s ok song writers never know what their songs are really about.

The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles hosted the 2009 Spike TV “Scream” Awards tonight in Los Angeles.  The show will air on Spike TV on Tuesday, October 27th at 10 pm.  The “Scream” Awards honor the best in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror and Comics.

Film, Television and Music stars were on hand to celebrate the best of the best from the last year.  The new “STAR TREK” film lead the list of nominees with 17 nominations, including Best Director, Best Ensemble and Best Sci-Fi Film.  Karl Urban who plays Leonard “Bones” McCoy in film was glad to be able to help celebrate the film and stopped to chat with the tons of reporters covering the event before dashing into the venue.

Television was also honored and the hit HBO vampire show “TRUE BLOOD” racked up 9 nominations.  Actor Sam Trammell who plays Sam Merlotte on the show said he was “happy that the show really took off last season”.  He also added that Season 3 of the popular show will begin filming in December, which should make fans very happy.

Legendary musician Keith Richards was given a special “Rock Immortal Award”.  The show will feature a tribute to Richards from some of his most die-hard fans, including actor and friend Johnny Depp.

LOS ANGELES (October 14, 2009)—AFI FEST 2009 presented by Audi today announced the complete lineup of films for the 23rd edition of the Festival, including the Closing Night Gala, Centerpiece Screening, Tributes and Special Presentations.

 

The Weinstein Company’s A SINGLE MAN has been selected as the AFI FEST Closing Night Gala presentation. A SINGLE MAN will make its US Premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Thursday, November 5, 2009.

 

Sony Pictures Classics’ THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS has been selected as AFI FEST’s Centerpiece Screening Gala presentation. THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS will make its US Premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Monday, November 2, 2009.

 

The Closing Night Gala presentation of A SINGLE MAN features the directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford from his script adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s acclaimed novel. The film follows a day in the life of a gay British college professor in Los Angeles as he attempts to cope with the death of his partner. Ford’s work helming the project and Colin Firth’s lead performance in the film have received critical acclaim following screenings at the Venice and Toronto film festivals. Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode and Ginnifer Goodwin also star in the film. The Weinstein Company release is due in theaters on December 11.

 

Ford, Firth and Moore are scheduled to attend.

 

“It is exciting to champion a talented artist like Tom Ford as he moves beyond the boundaries of one medium into another. In A SINGLE MAN, he delivers an elegant and beautiful personal story that will resonate with all audience members“ said AFI FEST Artistic Director Rose Kuo.   

 

The Centerpiece Screening Gala presentation features the latest work by director Terry Gilliam. THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS follows the leader of a traveling theater troupe who, having made a deal with the devil, takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations. The film stars Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Heath Ledger in his final role. The Sony Pictures Classics release is due in theaters stateside on December 25.

 

Gilliam and Plummer are scheduled to attend.

 

“The mind-altering, looking-glass world that Terry Gilliam creates in THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS,” notes Director of Programming Robert Koehler, “is like a model for his ideal cinema, in which anything can happen and all rules are broken. If audiences thought that THE DARK KNIGHT was their last glimpse of Heath Ledger, then what Ledger brings to Gilliam’s fantasy-adventure will surprise them.”

 

AFI FEST has selected actors Christopher Plummer and Viggo Mortensen to receive tributes at this year’s Festival. Sponsored by the Skirball Cultural Center, Plummer’s tribute event will precede the screening of his film THE LAST STATION on Tuesday, November 3. Mortensen’s tribute will precede the US Premiere of the film THE ROAD on Wednesday, November 4. Both Tributes will take place at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

 

One of the world’s most respected actors, Plummer has won two Tony Awards (for CYRANO and BARRYMORE), three Drama Desk Awards, the National Arts Club Medal and two Emmys. He was a leading member of  Laurence Olivier’s Royal National Theatre and Peter Hall’s Royal  Shakespeare Company. Since appearing in Sidney Lumet’s STAGE STRUCK (1958), his more than 100 films have included WIND ACROSS THE  EVERGLADES (1958), THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965), WATERLOO (1970) and TWELVE MONKEYS (1995), THE INSIDER (1999), A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001), SYRIANA (2005) and INSIDE MAN (2006). He stars as Leo Tolstoy in THE LAST STATION and plays the title role in THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS.

John Hillcoat THE ROAD is adapted from the acclaimed novel by Cormac McCarthy, THE ROAD stars Mortensen as a father making his way with his young son across the scorched landscape of a post-apocalyptic world. Directed by Hillcoat from a script by Joe Penhall, the film also stars Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce and Molly Parker. The Weinstein Company release is due in theaters November 25.

From his debut in Peter Weir’s WITNESS (1985) to his signature role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, Mortensen’s career has been highlighted by intensely stunning portrayals of men of strict and uncompromising character dealing with a shifting moral universe. Notable films include Sean Penn’s INDIAN RUNNER (1991), Gregory Widen’s THE PROPHECY (1995), Ridley Scott’s G.I. JANE, Tony Goldwyn’s A WALK ON THE MOON (1999), David Cronenberg’s A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (2005) and EASTERN PROMISES (2007)—for which he received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations—and Ed Harris’ APPALOOSA (2008). 

 

“Viggo Mortensen and Christopher Plummer are two actors and film artists of the highest order,” said Kuo. “They share that rare trait of being looked up to by audiences and film fans around the world as well as being greatly respected by their peers.”

 

Other highlights among the complete film schedule announced today include Jonathan Demme’s music documentary NEIL YOUNG TRUNK SHOW (with Demme and Young confirmed to attend) and the screening of two films connected by legendary art director and longtime AFI Conservatory Distinguished Lecturer Robert Boyle, who turned 100 on October 10. Those films are AFI Conservatory Alumnus Daniel Raim’s (Production  Design ’99) documentary SOMETHING’S GONNA LIVE and Alfred Hitchcock’s classic NORTH BY NORTHWEST, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

 

A follow-up to Raim’s Oscar-nominated documentary, THE MAN ON LINCOLN’S NOSE, SOMETHING’S GONNA LIVE profiles Boyle (THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, THE BIRDS) and renowned art directors Henry Bumstead (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE STING), Harold Michelson (STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, CATCH-22) and Albert Nozaki (THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS), as well as master cinematographers Conrad Hall (IN COLD BLOOD, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID) and Haskell Wexler (WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT). From snapshots, sketches and vintage footage interwoven with interviews and new scenes of these octogenarian artists at work, we get a behind-the-scenes look at master moviemaking.

On Monday, November 2, AFI FEST, in conjunction with Warner Home Video will present a special screening of Hitchcock’s NORTH BY NORTHWEST. The first Hitchcock film to be released on Blu-ray, the film has been restored and remastered for its 50th anniversary. As part of the Gala event, director William Friedkin will attend to moderate a Q&A with Boyle and the film’s stars Eva Marie Saint and Martin Landau.

 

Koehler noted, “In our 23rd year, our programming seeks to shine a light on an international cinema landscape filled with brilliant young filmmakers forging fresh, unexpected pathways, documentarians on a quest for truth, and a fascinating survey of stop-motion animation (FANTASTIC MR. FOX, IN THE ATTIC, A TOWN CALLED PANIC), while delivering what AFI FEST has done from the beginning—offering audiences a view of the vastness of cinema across the world.”

Enhancing the AFI FEST/American Film Market alliance, the final two days of AF FEST (November 6-7) will screen at the Laemmle’s Monica 4-plex, 1332 2nd Street, Santa Monica, in close proximity to AFM headquartered activity.

                                               

AFI FEST 2009’s overall lineup will showcase 67 features (54 narrative, 13 documentary) and 26 shorts for a total of 93 films from 32 countries.

 

The breakdown by section is Galas/Tributes (7), New Lights Competition (11), Special Presentations (3), Documentary (13), World Cinema (27), Alt_Cinema (6) and Shorts (26).

 

The Festival is headquartered at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. All screenings from October 30–November 5 will take place at the Grauman’s Chinese and Mann Chinese 6 theaters in Hollywood with the final two days of the Festival (November 6-7) screening at the Laemmle’s Monica 4-plex in Santa Monica.

“Keith Richards is part rock god, part superhero and nobody had rocked as hard and lived to tell about it,” said Patterson.  “As his friend Johnny Depp once pointed out, Keith Richards was a beloved and feared pirate long before he ever played the part in any movie.”
