Vegas based band “Moksha” played on Friday before a packed crowd at the Winchester Cultural Center.  A nice mix of bluesy, funky punk rock, the all ages crowd was truly feeling the vibe as the band worked it’s way through their set.  The trombone and saxophones added a full rich sound to the night and the band even threw in a fantastic cover of Beck’s “Sexx Laws”, which got the crowd on their feet.

Check out www.mokshatime.com to get to know this fantastic group.

Copyrights. We don’t need no stinking copyrights! The Russian version of Teenage Mutant Turtles has an interesting array of stolen characters.

Below is a collection of  weird art, fascinating reinterpretations, seemingly drug induced drawings, crossover panels and a sacred 5¼ inch floppy disk. The one I find most confusing is the Ninja Rabbit panel. The Ninja Rabbit is either  evolving into Raphael or Raphael is devolving into the Ninja Rabbit.

Don’t forget the pizza!

There are hundreds of panels have fun and plan to spend some time here.

Ron Perlman

From Glass Eye Pix, the maverick production company responsible for recent independent genre movies THE LAST WINTER, I SELL THE DEAD, and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, as well as the forthcoming STAKE LAND and THE INNKEEPERS comes a new venture in the macabre.

Inspired by the classic radio shows of Alfred Hitchcock, Boris Karloff , Peter Lorre, and Orson Welles, TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE is a half hour downloadable audio program featuring notable thespians including Vincent D’Onofrio, Ron Perlman, Angus Scrimm, Shea Wigham, James Le Gros, Joe Swanberg, and Kevin Corrigan.

Hosted by Glass Eye Pix CEO Larry Fessenden, each thirty-minute episode is written and directed by one of today’s horror auteurs including Joe Maggio (BITTER FEAST)¸ JT Petty (THE BURROWERS, SOFT FOR DIGGING), Graham Reznick (I CAN SEE YOU, THE VIEWER), Paul Solet (GRACE), Ashley Thorpe (THE HAIRY HANDS, SCAYRECROW), Simon Rumley (THE LIVING AND THE DEAD, RED WHITE AND BLUE), Jeff Buhler (MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN, INSAINTARIUM), and Sarah Langan (Author of THE KEEPER, THE MISSING).

Conceived during a fog-drenched car ride by Fessenden and frequent collaborator Glenn McQuaid (I SELL THE DEAD, effects supervisor on THE ROOST and THE LAST WINTER), this project continues the mission at Glass Eye Pix to celebrate individual voices in the arts and to reassert the broad palette of moods that comprise the horror story.

Says Fessenden: “We thought it would be a great opportunity to get into production, work with some of our favorite people and meet some new ones with a project that was relatively affordable. I’ve always loved radio and audio books. We wanted to try our hand at the format. I’m amazed at what people came up with. Feels pretty special. Like addicts, we’re already looking to Season two.”

McQuaid adds: “Season One has been a tremendous pleasure to work on. Larry and I wanted to gather stories from all walks of life; let each tale stand on it’s own merits, as well as complement the entire season. Listeners will be transported far and wide, from distant moons to misty moors, by stories told with a wide range of styles and sensibilities. The challenge for Larry and I, and all the filmmakers we reached out to, was to close our eyes, let go of our visual technique and concentrate purely on sound and performance.”

In this week’s installment: This Oracle Moon, directed by Jeff Buhler (Insanitarium), and features stars Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth) The story is about a rescue team of astronauts who are dispatched to a distant moon in hopes of reclaiming survivors from an exploratory mission gone wrong from six years ago. No bodies are found, dead or otherwise, amongst the ruins of the abandoned colony, and the rescuers wonder if the mysterious, elusive creatures inhabiting the nearby hills may hold some answers.

GI Jams rocks the Cannery in Las Vegas

Article by Suzanne Philips

photos copyright Luck Media and Marketing

GI Jams, dedicated to giving those in the military who are musically talented the opportunity to be heard and get some financial gain from their music and talent, held a blockbuster concert at the Las Vegas Cannery Hotel and Casino to celebrate their one year anniversary on Friday, November 12th.

Electrifying performances by some of GI Jams’ registered artists were; American Attitude, a Jacksonville-based rock band, Wyoming’s popular country band Joe Speed Band ,singer/songwriters Corey Bower and Adrian Manuel, San Antonio-based southern rock/metal band Destruction Evolution, singerMarine Lt. Col. Jerard Brewer and Hammond B-3 organ players Ric Ulsky and Rick McDermid of Dark and McDermid.

Co-Founders Denny Randell and Biddy Schippers, who are both accomplished and well-known songwriters, felt that this is an important project to honor those men and women who risk their lives to keep our country safe.  “We are in the music business, we are very greatful for what has happened in our life and wanted to give back.” said Denny Randell.  “We wanted to take artists that were on the site and give them the opportunity to connect with the public.”

The bands and artists who got to perform at the event were very grateful.  Randell says that “The military members appreciate the fact that with all that they are contending with, some of them being in active war zones, that they are given the opportunity to perform and focus on their talent and that part of their lives.  Biddy and I wanted to do everything that we can to give back to them in appreciation of all they do for us.”

And clearly, the soldiers do appreciate Randell and Schippers. They were deeply touched the night of the event when some of the soldiers presented them with a personalized plaque thanking the organization for their support and patriotism.

The Las Vegas community really has gotten behind the GI Jams project.  “It’s our 1 year anniversary of the GI Jams website and we got a lot of support from the community in Las Vegas.” says Biddy Schippers.   “KOMP radio did a half hour program on our event and a follow up the day before the show.  Fox TV had one of the military artists from our site, Cory Bower, on their newscast.  We have been getting great community support. ”  And the Vegas community at large turned out in great numbers to see the talent these soldiers had to offer and appreciated the event as a whole.

Denny Randell says that there is more in store for the coming year. “We are working on some other GI Jams events and some live shows depending on the schedules of our performers who are active military.  We are going to make the Veteran’s Day event an annual event here in Las Vegas.”

And some more good news – Schippers told CFM that “All of the artists featured on the website,www. gijams.com, will be on the compilation album, GI Jams first album which will be released after the first of the year.”

For more information on GI Jams, check out their website www.gijams.com, where you can download songs with 100% of the profits going to the military artists.

Thanks to Denny Randell and Biddy Schippers for taking the time to speak with CFM and check back with us for more info on upcoming GI Jams events.

After spending more than a decade singing in a Gospel group, as well as performing with her cousins, Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick on recording sessions and in concerts around the globe, the beautiful & talented FELICIA MOSS here comes her first solo album released on the FAMOUS RECORDS label.

Bands are sometimes confused about what a publicist does, others aren’t aware they exist.  When I started the website I rejected the idea of press releases, then some how Luck Media and I came together.  Their well written press releases and the caliber of their entertainers changed my mind. I have met some excellent bands through them.
CFM will only bring you information from sources we trust.
This Q&A is with Jen Onsum a I publicist I respect. She is with an excellent company Luck Media and her answers should clear up the publicist/press release confusion.
Losillë

1. What is a press release? A press release is a written document used to announce news to the media and the public. The news can be a new single/video, new album, tour, special show, chart success, endorsements… basically anything deemed to be newsworthy.
2. What is a publicist? A publicist is a representative hired to make sure the media knows about you and works to get you media attention. They also work to help get you in the public eye.
3. What does a publicist do? A publicist does a variety of activities. The basics of what a publicist does is write and distribute press releases, sends out press kits, pitches interviews / album reviews / TV appearances / show reviews / show previews / spotlights / etc., coordinates interviews. But it goes much beyond that… we consult on photos, image and branding. We solicit event participation and help secure endorsements. We provide media training to prepare you for interviews. We attend interviews and events with you when necessary. Basically beyond the basics we help shape your image and your career and help make sure you are the best you can be. Also, in this digital age, we also help with your online presence from advising on your social media efforts to providing and managing content.
4. Why do I need a publicist? Publicists are the experts on the media. We know how to reach them and what they’re interested in. We have established connections with them to utilize to get you the coverage you need and deserve. We also have connections with various aspects of the entertainment and business industry that we can utilize to help build and enhance your career. We are very resourceful and full of insight.
5. Does my band need to have certain qualifications to hire a company like Luck Media? You should have music available or that will soon be available. If there’s no music, there’s little we can share with the media to introduce you to them and get their interest. Beyond that, the more active the band is with shows etc., the better.
6. What do I need to look for it I want to hire a publicist? You definitely want a company with experience and especially in your genre. A company known for having a good reputation and that can provide references is also important. They should also show enthusiasm and interest in working with you by showing they have at least checked you out by referencing something about your music, sound, web site, etc., as it’s easy to just say “Yes, of course we can work with you!”
7. What would I want to avoid? A company that doesn’t have experience and especially in your genre. Check out their web site. If there’s not a lot of information on the web site about the company, services, past and present clients, examples of their work, and complete contact information, you should look elsewhere.
8. How much does a publicist cost? The cost really varies. It varies from company to company and the kinds of services provided.

Costas Mandylor (Saw 3D, Beowulf) appeared at the Long Beach Comic Con on Saturday October 30th to promote the last chapter of the Saw series, “SAW 3D”.  With the film being released in theatres just the day before he didn’t comment too much on the movie itself but reassured us that the audience is in for more thrills, chills and interesting new traps.

Props from the movie sat in a glass case just feet from the actor, allowing the guests to view the iconic pieces of the gruesome, horrifying and memorable moments from the series’ history.  Items include: a severed foot autographed by Costas Mandylor (Detective Hoffman) , Shawnee Smith (Amanda) , James Van Patten (Dr. Heffner) and Tanedra Howard (Simone); the saw from the bathroom seen in Saw 3; a tape with the words “Play Me” written on it from the movie Saw 3; a recorder autographed by Shawnee Smith (Amanda) from the movie Saw 2 and much more.

The line to meet Mandylor formed hours before he arrived, eventually wrapping itself around the booth in which he would be signing.  With great pleasure greeted each fan that walked through the autograph line, personalizing and taking photos with those who asked.

Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B and Paramount Pictures are collaborating to make the book into a motion picture. While it is still in the very early stages, a high six figure deal has been acquired and Brad Pitt is very excited to see this through, so much so that he is going to star in it.  The date itself has not been release but it is scheduled to be released in 2012.

Steve Newlin on HBO’s wildly successful show “TRUE BLOOD” graced the Long Beach Comic Con with his presence Saturday, October 30, to promote the latest issue of his comic book Lucid.  The second issue of the four part miniseries Lucid will be put on stands  November 10th.  The comic, currently set for four issues, mixes the spy genre with urban magic.  McMillian and Archaia comics partner Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Star Trek) boast that Lucid “is not like any other comic on the market”.

Spike TV delves into the secretive community of special ops in “Most Lethal,” a new one-hour non-scripted series in which real-life warriors from the top tiers of special operation forces faceoff in a grueling competition to determine who is the fiercest.  The series will examine the shrouded world of these military mercenaries by challenging 12 of the most dangerous in the world to compete for the title of “Most Lethal.”

Using advanced technology to analyze the weaponry, training operations, and tactics, the series will be an authentic look at this covert world rarely explored on television.  The 10-episode series, produced by GRB Entertainment, will premiere on Spike in the summer 2011.

“We are bringing together twelve of the best-trained combatants in the world for the most intense reality series on television,” said Sharon Levy, Spike TV’s executive vice president of original series.  “The show will arm the viewer with information on training techniques and history of the special ops that viewers can’t find anywhere else.”

The competitors on “Most Lethal,” ranging from non-active elite members of the Navy Seals to Green Berets, will have to withstand physical tests and demonstrate skills that go far beyond anything seen before in a competition show.  “It’s not enough for them to be fit and strong and great with weapons,” said GRB CEO Gary R. Benz. “We’re going to test every combat skill and tactical response in the book.  Then, we’re going to throw away the book and find out what they learned on the battlefield.”

The series will be filmed at state-of-the-art military facilities around the U.S. under the supervision of local evaluators and a handpicked team of top tier combat operators.  The challenges are modeled on real world combat scenarios that will test everything from urban combat to evasion, from search-and-destroy to reconnaissance, and will include threat evaluation and threat elimination.  Each location includes special terrain along with a unique set of combat challenges that the contestants must overcome.

Unlike existing military-based television shows, “Most Lethal” will deal with all facets of combat including the split second decisions that are critical to success and survival.  Casting will begin in the coming weeks.  A host will be announced at a later date.

“Most Lethal” was created by Tim Prokop, GRB’s vice president of development, who will also produce and direct the series.  GRB’s international division will market both the foreign sales of the series as well as the format rights Sharon Levy is Spike TV’s executive vice president of original series and Tim Duffy is vice president of original programming for Spike TV.

Event Producers Denny Randell and Biddy Schippers

Well-know songwriters Denny Randell and Biddy Schippers are supporting and bringing the musical talent of hundreds of Veterans and active duty soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen and National Guard members to the forefront via their cleverly titled project and website GIJams.com.

GI Jams launched in November 2009 with much fanfare among mainstream and military media, from CNBC, Billboard.biz and Celebrity Twitter—including a tweet from magician and TV personality Penn Jillette–to Purple Heart, Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times and Marine Times.

Coinciding with the one-year anniversary since the site’s launch, GI Jams goes “live” for the first time with a highly anticipated Veterans Day Weekend Show Friday, November 12 at The Club in The Cannery Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas. The concert, which features performances by eight of the site’s most popular artists and bands, begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Cannery box office, or via phone (702) 507-5757 and online at www.cannerycasino.com.

“Biddy and I are thrilled when we hear how much GI Jams means to the many great musicians who also serve our country,” says Randell. “Artists are joining while based in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait…and many Vietnam veterans are on board too. Many have written to tell us that no one else has ever given them a place to put their music. We thought the concert would be a marvelous thing to raise awareness and bring more people into the experience of what we are doing while also finding another way to show appreciation for our troops. On the day after Veteran’s Day, we wanted to do something that is uplifting, positive and different.”

Scheduled performers at the GI Jams’ Veterans Day Weekend Show include Jacksonville rock band American Attitude; singer/songwriters Corey Bower and Adrian Manuel; Destruction Evolution, a San Antonio based southern rock/metal band; Marine Lt. Col. Jerard Brewer; songwriter, Hammond B-3 organ player Ric Ulsky and Rick McDermid, who will be performing songs he wrote and performed with his late partner, Don Dark, a marine who served in Vietnam, plus, country artists Joe Speed Band. 100% of the download profits on the site go to the military artists.
