J. R. Ewing won’t simply be forgotten he will get an appropriate funeral in an upcoming episode according to US Magazine.

Taken by throat cancer in November of 2012 at age 81, Hagman was remembered affectionately by his Dallas co-stars and crew, who respected the well-thought-of TV idol as “a giant, a larger-than-life personality whose iconic performance as J.R. Ewing will endure as one of the most indelible in entertainment history. He truly loved portraying this globally recognized character, and he leaves a legacy of entertainment, generosity and grace,” according to a statement.

The network has not given any information on how J.R. Ewing will die. Ewing fans can only hope that his ending will be as spectacular as his life, and he does not go gently into that good night.

The TNT reboot is scheduled to premiere January 28,2013. Hagman recorded several episodes that will be aired prior to J.R.’s funeral in the eighth episode slated to air on March 11, 2013.

Surf Dog Ricochet wanted to do something to lend a paw to the community of Newtown, CT during their time of grief and recovery. She and her mom are trying to raise funds to send Guardian Angel Bears to each of the 700 kids from Sandy Hook Elementary. She is hoping the bears will make the children feel safer.

Ricochet started the Guardian Angel fundraiser to provide all 700 kids from Sandy Hook Elementary School their own personal guardian angel bear to help them feel safer. They can take this guardian angel with them wherever they go, holding it close for comfort. Guardian angel bears will also go to the families of the children & teachers who lost their lives.

Each bear costs $5 wholesale from First and Main, and she is trying to raise enough funds to purchase one for all 700 kids at the school, the teachers and the families of the victims.

All funds received over the $3500 that the bears cost, will be donated to the Newtown community to help fund funeral expenses, counseling, scholarship & memorial funds, and whatever else they need. A special card will also be included with the check that has every donor’s name on it, so the community knows each of YOU guardian angels that came together for this project.

Your Guardian Angel bear will be sealed with a lick!

Please donate $5 or more! If you’d like to designate a bear for each of your children/pets, just donate $5 per individual & note their names in the “note to seller” section on Pay Pal. I know the kids will feel comforted by our small token of compassion.

Thank you so much!

Las Vegas Paranormal group Elite Vegas Paranormal Society investigates legendary haunted hospital in Los Angeles.

Article and Photos by Suzanne Philips

Linda Vista Hospital

In the Paranormal community, several locations are legendary for their reported activity: the Washoe Club in Virginia City, Nevada; Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky; Eastern State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania and more.  Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles certainly fits into this category.

The hospital, which opened in 1904, was originally called the Santa Fe Railroad Hospital and was built to treat employees of the railroad and their families.  The original building was razed and rebuilt in 1924 in a Mission Revival Style and in 1937 was renamed Linda Vista Hospital.  The railroad sold the hospital to a managed care company in 1980, when the area around the hospital was becoming less affluent and seeing a huge increase in the number of gunshot woods and stabbings.  The hospital ER was forced to close in 1989 as they were treating a huge number of uninsured and under insured patients and after a decline in the quality of care after a number of doctors moved to other hospitals, the hospital closed in 1991.

“Chapel” used to film “True Blood”

Since it has closed, the hospital has been used as a filming location for TV shows such as “E.R.”, “True Blood” and “Dexter” and films like “To Live and Die in L.A.” and “Outbreak”.  Reports of Paranormal activity have plagued the property for years.  Many people have claimed to see shadows, hear disembodied voices, see apparitions and have strange items move on their own.  Travel Channel’s hugely popular show “Ghost Adventures” filmed 2 investigations on the property, and led to one of their investigators, Nick Groff, coming face to face with the apparition of a lady that affects him to this day.

The Fake Morgue

The hospital is currently being renovated to be used as senior housing, but Las Vegas Paranormal group Elite Vegas Paranormal Society was fortunate enough to be one of the last groups allowed into the hospital to investigate before it is demolished.

Elite Vegas Paranormal Society (EVPS)  is one of Las Vegas’ more well-known Paranormal groups and is very active in the community.  They put on the Las Vegas Paracon each year (http://elitevegasparanormalsociety.com/The_Las_Vegas_Paracon.html) and recently conducted public ghost hunts in October at Historic Bonnie Springs Ranch.

The Famous “Yellow Room” at Linda Vista Hospital

For the Linda Vista Hospital investigation, EVPS took 12 investigators and special guest investigator, actress Amanda Lynn Hills, to the Boyle Heights location for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The team set up a facebook and twitter feed for the evening where they invited fans and friends to watch videos from the event that were posted during the night and comment on photos taken at each part of the location.  They were also asked to tell the team where they would like to see them investigate, thus making it an interactive experience for those who couldn’t be there.

The EVPS team split up into groups as they investigated locations such as the surgical suites, the boiler room and patient floors.  At one point during the evening, the team all came together to try a very progressive experiment.  As several of the EVPS team members are in the medical field, they decided to try a “mock code” to try to bring out spirits and activity.  All of the team members dressed as medial professionals ran a “code” on a team member playing a patient and simulated trying to save her life.  Outside the trauma suite, they placed a REM pod and had cameras running.  They tried the experiment two separate times and each time, the REM pod started to alarm when no one was near it in the hallway outside the trauma suite.  Clearly, someone or something was reacting to the commotion going on in the trauma suite!

EVPS team members spent over 9 hours at the location and collected a ton of audio and video recordings that they are currently reviewing to see what evidence was caught.  The team will produce a video which will be posted on their website at a later date.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" does not transport you to the Shire. It is a collection of Tolkien odds and ends connected with, excessive, drawn out special effects. Like the Trilogy, you can get your popcorn refilled and go to the bathroom during the battle scenes and not miss anything.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”  was people walking around in New Zealand.  It was not worth waiting in the cold for.

While working for a theater checking service I was given the “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” assignment. The book was difficult to read and to be honest I had only read part of it because my boyfriend loved it.  I never expected to see the movie.  When you do a theater check you make sure the correct trailers are attached, for example no R-rated trailers on a family film. We also physically count how many people are seeing the movie. Checkers leave 10 minutes or so into the film. When “The Fellowship of the Ring” started I was spellbound. It was the most amazing theater experience I have ever had. Leaving to file my reports was difficult.

For “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, I was there at midnight sitting in the same theater waiting for the same inspiration, the cheering from the crowd and the excitement of a collective shared adventure…it never happened. The beginning was lumbering and a pointless look back at the beginning of “The Fellowship of the Ring”.   Ian Holm as “Old” Bilbo and Elijah Wood as Frodo did an excellent job. “Old” Bilbo introducing the story made sense. My jaded nature makes me feel Elijah Wood was there more because of his enormous fan base from the Trilogy than needing Frodo to introduce the story.

The midnight crowd and I waited patiently for that magic moment, those near sacred words, “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms….” This should have been a defining moment! A time when we cheered and the crowd went wild, instead it was clumsily inserted almost as an afterthought.
Big meh.

Ian McKellen was perfect as Gandalf. He is the movie’s saving grace.

Hugo Weaving as Elrond and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel does an excellent job with the little they are given to work with.

The characters were not fleshed out. The movie jumped from Tolkien point to Tolkien point and was confusing.

Dean O’Gorman as Fili and Aidan Turner as Kili are definitely eye candy. Gorgeous men.

There are spots in this movie when the camera went so far out of focus that it hurt my eyes.

In the Trilogy, you never questioned prospective or size or the reality of the situation. In “The Hobbit:  Unexpected Journey” you do. The wargs look cartoonish, change size and generally suck.  Maybe this works out in 3D but not in a regular theater.

Perhaps so much money was spent on the 3D effects they ran out of money for make up and hair. When you look at John Rhys-Davies, you see a dwarf. When you look at the dwarfs in The Hobbit, you see people with prosthetic faces.

Bilbo’s wig is so bad it had me questioning my memory of what the original Hobbits looked like. The Hobbit feet are different and look like things attached to their legs when they show long shots of Bilbo and Frodo. As I started to doubt my memory “The Fellowship of The Rings” came on, and I was right! Things don’t look fake in the Trilogy  the way they do in “The Hobbit.”

Bilbo’s ears are as big as his hands. His right ear is so large at one point it is distracting. Maybe this is a 3D effect, but it looks fake, fake and fake in a regular theater.

Martin Freeman does not sparkle as Bilbo Baggins. His performance is flat and he is not Hobbity enough. He is Watson in a bad wig and Dollar Store fake ears.

The only scene that got a reaction from this midnight crowd was the game of wits between Bilbo and Gollum. Let me remind you this was a  crowd that stood outside in 37 degree weather to see the movie.

The Lord Of The Rings fans turned out for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. “Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Tolkien’s novel grossed $37.5 million, Box Office Mojo reports. This total gives “The Hobbit” the highest-grossing December Friday ever, according to THR. “The Hobbit” beat out previous record-holder “I Am Legend,” which made $30.1 million in 2007 on its opening Friday. THR reports that Warner Bros. is predicting a $85 million weekend for “The Hobbit,” based on its Friday total.” Let’s see if these numbers hold. The people I spoke with at the theater will not be seeing it a second time.

Minor spoiler below this line.

_______________________________________________________________________

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is primarily used to introduce the character of  Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Bilbo is a background character that seems to be misplaced in the movie at times.

We the people are mad as hell and we aren’t going to take it any more.

The first thought I had was that these people are all millionaires and it won’t hurt them like it would us. But. Something to be done to make sure our government employees are held accountable.

This petition will send a clear message that we are tired of paying four-year olds to squabble!

You have to enroll to vote. It is simply name, email and address. Let’s get this thing going!

Congress and the President must forfeit their pay and healthcare benefits until the fiscal cliff is resolved. And they must pass a solution, not a stop-gap.

And, if they miss the Jan 1 deadline, all of Congress and the President must take a permanent 15% pay cut. Their pay cannot be raised for two years.

–Special Post-Thanksgiving Marathon Event Featuring the Complete First Season Airs Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24–

Science Channel invites viewers to join FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, eccentric scientist Dr. Walter Bishop and his estranged son Peter as they investigate the universe of the paranormal and science of the unexplained on the breakthrough series FRINGE.  Beginning Thanksgiving Week, the critically-acclaimed franchise returns to its very beginning with an expanded examination of actual fringe science that only Science Channel can provide.

Science Channel is airing all five seasons of FRINGE in 2012 and 2013, starting with the network premiere of the two-hour pilot and first episode on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, from 8-11 PM (ET/PT). To celebrate the premiere, Science Channel is continuing season one of FRINGE with daylong marathons on Friday, November 23 from 10:30 AM – 11 PM (ET/PT) and Saturday, November 24 from 11:30 AM – 11 PM (ET/PT). Following the marathon, FRINGE will air regularly every Tuesday night from 8-11 PM (ET/PT) beginning on Tuesday, November 27 with season two.

Featuring leading experts such as Dr. Michio Kaku, Science Channel will examine phenomena such as time travel, dream sharing and parallel universes with the short-form series, “Science of Fringe”.  Also, every Tuesday night Science Channel airings of FRINGE will begin with a special appearance by series star John Noble, who will set the stage for the back-to-back-to-back episodes.

“Viewers tuning into FRINGE on Science Channel will see one of television’s smartest and most addictive series in a more thought-provoking format than ever before,” said Debbie Adler Myers, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Science Channel.  “Audiences will find all of the action and riveting drama associated with this pop culture sensation, along with a deeper dive into the mind-blowing science that provides the foundation for the series.”

FRINGE explores the ever-blurring line between scientific concepts and reality, where hybrid beings tear through sewers, thieves walk through walls and portals open to parallel universes. Unable to police a world in which science has advanced beyond our wildest dreams–and nightmares–Olivia Dunham (series star Anna Torv) seeks help from Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his jack-of-all-trades son, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson). Under the direction of Special Agent Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick) and assisted by Agents Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole), Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo) and Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel), the Fringe Team investigates unusual incidents that defy human logic and unimaginable events that threaten our very existence on a universal scale.

December 12, 2012 ! Men, be prepared.

December 12, 2012 ! Men, be prepared.

An ancient Maya text has emerged from the jungles of Guatemala confirming the so-called “end date” of the Maya calendar, Dec. 21, 2012. Guys  ask yourself , “Are you ready?”

Male deer rub their antlers against the bark of trees, releasing their scent which attracts a herd of female deer. In our own animal kingdom we also communicate and understand each other using scent – often unknowingly. Call it the call of the wild.

[hana-code-insert name=’LikeVideo’ /]
A woman likes it when her man smells good!
I think the power of scent is something a lot of guys don’t know much about.
Our sense of smell is powerful and research suggests that certain scents can influence your mood, memory, emotions, mate choice, sexual arousal, performance, and more. It may sound crazy, but it’s true.
Basically, your nose sends information it gathers to both the primitive and complex parts of your brain. A strong sense of smell was one of the main survival tactics of early humans.
If your girlfriend claims certain scents affect her mood, chances are she’s right. Studies have actually shown marked differences in brain waves and physical activity after people have been exposed to different scents. Another thing for you to keep in mind is that, in general, women have a stronger sense of smell than guys, which means she likely has a reaction every time she smells you. This of course leads me to ask whether you’ve ever considered the effect your scent has on your lady? Keep in mind that different colognes, deodorants, soaps, body sprays, and shampoos will cause her to have an emotional and physical reaction.

Tony Curran as VanGogh

Tony Curran the perfect “Van Gogh” in “Vincent and The Doctor” is starring in a new SyFy channel thriller.

Defiance Trailer: New In Town

Defiance is coming. April 2013

[hana-code-insert name=’LikeVideo’ /]

“Tony  Curran rose to fame in the BBC television series This Life. Since then, the Scots star has appeared in a number of major film and television roles.

Some of his roles have included Rodney Skinner (The Invisible Man), an original character in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. To portray the Invisible Man, he donned a special suit that turned him into a walking bluescreen (according to his commentary on the DVD, he looked like a “smurf on acid“). Curran also played vampire roles in Guillermo del Toro’s Blade II and Underworld: Evolution. Wikipedia”

The series is set in the near future, where aliens known collectively as Votans have come to Earth seeking a new home after their solar system was destroyed.

However, when they reached Earth they discovered that despite a prolonged negotiation with the government on Earth they were not welcome. Rather than turn away, they began a war with the humans as they are determined to make Earth their new home. During the war, the Votans drop terraformers on the planet and transform the surface of the planet; scorching the earth, opening chasms in the ground and covering the surface of the planet in dust and debris. After decades of war, a ceasefire is declared when both side realise that they must focus on survival on this new almost alien planet. The series largely revolves around the character of Jeb Nolan. Jeb was only ten years old when the Votans arrived and he served in the military during the war. With the war now over, he returns to his hometown of St Louis to find that its is no longer the city he left; it is little more than refugee camp. Deciding that his services are needed, Jeb takes up a position as the Chief Lawkeeper in Defiance, so he can protect the town from dangerous clashes between humans and aliens, military scavengers and others dangerous visitors who occasionally enter the town.

Please join our friend, artist Zach Deputy, as he hosts a charitable disc golf tournament on the fantastic 18-hole Magnolia Disc Golf Course on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. Proceeds will benefit victims of Tropical Storm Debby through the work of Love INC. in Live Oak, Fl. On June 24, 2012, Tropical Storm Debby settled over north Florida for four days, dumping more than 25 inches of rain in some areas of Suwannee, Hamilton and Columbia counties. The Suwannee River rose to near record flood levels and dozens of sinkholes developed around those counties, destroying many businesses and homes while making roads impassible. Some 1500 families were flooded out of their homes – many left without shelter, cars, clothes, food or any worldly possessions. The flood affected over 10,000 other people throughout the tri- counties and many are still not back in their homes. For your $30 entry fee, you will be entered into the event and receive a commemorative Bear Creek disc. Sign up information will be announced soon. The 1st hole is right behind the Store of the Village.

What Music Inspires EDM Masters

[hana-code-insert name=’LikeArticle’ /]

EDM is a highly referential and cooperative genre. Borrowing from current trends and classic music alike the resulting work has, in turn, created inspiration for mainstream pop musicians worldwide. Top EDM artists like deadmau5, SKRILLEX, Avicii, and Afrojack spend their nights playing to clubs full of girls wearing sexy costumes and lingerie at Yumdrop.com and their days jet-setting to their next gig or working in the studio. In between all this, however, they are listening to their peers for inspiration. Where did these artists come from and who are they listening to?

deadmau5

Hailing from Niagara Falls, Ontario, deadmau5 (aka Joel Zimmerman) got his stage name during his days as a computer programmer. A frequent visitor of chat rooms, he changed his username after finding a dead mouse in a computer he was working on. Zimmerman has built a brand around the mouse, wearing a large and often ornate mouse shaped headpiece during most of his performances. He hopes to one day work with Boards of Canada or Autechre.

EDM influences:

  • Irish-born British artist Aphex Twin
  • English solo artist Squarepusher
  • Boards of Canada, a pair of Scottish brothers
  • Danish EDM producer and player of many instruments: Trentemøller

Other influences:

  • Heavy Metal bands: Slayer, Megadeth and Metallica
  • Landmark alternative British rockers Radiohead
  • Icelandic band Sigur Rós, known for their post-rock/ambient sound

SKRILLEX

American Sonny Moore, based in Los Angeles, has been a bit of a chameleon throughout his career. He made a name for himself as the lead singer of From First to Last, a post-hardcore/screamo genre metal band. In his current artistic manifestation, he has collaborated with the surviving members of the Doors on the track “Breakin’ a Sweat”. The artist is a prime example of the dynamic abilities the genre has in collaborating and meshing styles to create heart pounding music.

EDM influences:

  • The aforementioned Aphex Twin
  • Flux Pavilion, English DJ, producer, and label co-founder
  • British artist Doctor P
  • Dutch trio Noisia
  • British trio Nero
  • J.Rabbit

Other influences:

  • Marilyn Manson, industrial metal musician and performance artist
  • Industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails

Avicii

Performing as Avicii or Tim Berg, Tim Bergline is a Swedish born artist. His most popular song is widely considered to be “Levels” on which he sampled Etta James. The artist had the honor of being introduced at Ultra Music Fest by none other than Madonna earlier this year, adding to the eclectic outreach the DJ has. His cited influences are generally within the EDM genre.

Influences:

  • Laidback Luke, a Dutch DJ and producer
  • French duo Daft Punk
  • Swedish House Mafia member Axwell
  • Eric Prydz, Swedish DJ
  • Swedish House Mafia, the now defunct Sweden-based trio
  • Steve Angello, also formerly of Swedish House Mafia

Afrojack

Dutch artist Afrojack, aka Nick van de Wall, started playing piano at age five and hasn’t looked back. His career is already prolific despite being so young. He’s collaborated with Beyonce, Pitbull, David Guetta and Eva Simons, amongst many others. Like Avicii, he has been influenced by Laidback Luke and Swedish House Mafia. Afrojack is in the middle of a worldwide tour, taking him from Vegas to South Africa, another example of how his music is reaching every part of the globe.

Eddie Izzard as "Grandpa", Sam Dracula in this Munsters remake.

Eddie Izzard as “Grandpa”, Sam Dracula in this Munsters remake.

“Mockingbird Lane” was introduced by my favorite Blutbaden  and starred Eddie Izzard, one of my favorite comedians.  Disappointment came rather quickly. This pilot episode did not leave me wanting more.

“Grandpa Sam Dracula is essentially Dracula who assembled Herman because no man was good enough for his daughter Lily, a sexy vamp. Lily’s niece Marilyn the freak is actually normal and Lily and Herman’s only child, Eddie, has his werewolf tendencies surface in puberty, forcing the family to relocate to their famous 1313 Mockingbird Lane address.”  Imdb.com

This is an excellent cast and the characters are good for the most part. Something went wrong when the writers got the whole thing together. It just didn’t click.

Portia de Rossi as Lily Dracula Munster, Countess of Shroudshire is perfect. She is sexy, mysterious and slightly off since she gave birth to Eddie and didn’t eat him.

Charity Wakefield as Marilyn Munster had to work with an ambiguous character.  The writers seemed to struggle to get her into the pilot.

Jerry O’Connell as Herman Munster didn’t have the funky eccentric quality that you expect of Herman.  They wrote his part as a put upon “any man” that didn’t pop.

Mason Cook as Eddie Munster didn’t sparkle in the role. Maybe he was confused because the writers who wrote his part were confused.

Eddie Izzard as “D” was just enough weird to make Sam Dracula, Count of Transylvania interesting.  “D” was the one character in the episode that scratched the surface of its potential.

The pilot is hard to pin down. It isn’t “Dexter” but it tries to be on some comedic level. Grandpa drinking blood from a corpse wasn’t as funny as it should have been, it fell flat. The scene wasn’t  creepy like “Dexter”or entertaining the way you expect an Eddie Izzard scene to be. Izzard sipping blood should have been belly laughing funny.  In the end, Eddie Izzard and Portia de Rossi couldn’t save this mess. If there is another episode, which looks doubtful, they would be the only reason to give the show a second chance.

The following is from the NBC website.

“Mockingbird Lane,” based on executive producer Bryan Fuller’s (“Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) script and directed by executive producer Bryan Singer (“X-Men” film series, “House”), is a new, reimagined version of the classic 1960s comedy “The Munsters,” now as a visually spectacular one-hour drama with a darker edge and tone. The cast includes Jerry O’Connell (“The Defenders”) as Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi (“Arrested Development”) as his wife Lily, Eddie Izzard (“United States of Tara,” “The Riches”) as Grandpa, Mason Cook (“Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D”) as Eddie and Charity Wakefield (“The Raven”) as Marilyn.

In the original 1964-66 series “The Munsters,” the odd, but lovable family lived on 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

In “Mockingbird Lane,” sweet little Eddie Munster (Cook) is a normal kid about to enter the horrors of puberty. The truth is, he’s about to discover that, for him, becoming a teenager means growing hair in truly unexpected places – as in all over his body – every time the moon is full! Eddie’s got it pretty good though. His loving, supportive, run-of-the-mill family includes his mom Lily (de Rossi), the daughter of Dracula, his dad Herman (O’Connell), who brings new meaning to “Frankenstein,” and Grandpa (Izzard), who would give Dracula a run for his money if he weren’t actually Dracula! Of course, there’s creepy cousin Marilyn (Wakefield), who’s really the odd one because she’s so completely normal.

Buying a house these days is a nightmare, so Herman and Lily are shocked that no one scooped up the rambling Victorian mansion at 1313 Mockingbird Lane that was the site of a series of grisly hobo murders. Settling into their new place, they’re quickly onto the mission at hand: to gently ease Eddie into the reality of his werewolf adolescence. But it’s not always so easy to accept that your child is a little “different” from the rest of the kids. Meanwhile, Herman, who works as a funeral director, is suffering from a heart condition. Since he’s made up mostly of spare parts, he knew his makeshift heart would eventually give out. No worries though, because Grandpa, who is pretty good at procuring body parts, is on the case. All Herman cares about is finding a new heart with the same capacity to love Lily as much as he has for so many decades.

“Mockingbird Lane” is from Bad Hat Harry Productions and Universal Television. Executive producers include Fuller, Singer and Sara Colleton (“Dexter”). Singer also directed the pilot.  http://www.nbc.com/mockingbird-lane/about/

Electronic Dance Music (or EDM) making waves from continent to continent.

Electronic Dance Music (or EDM) making waves from continent to continent.

To borrow a legendary phrase from the canon of 1960s rock and roll, the evolution of electronic dance music has been a long, strange trip. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when and where the dance craze began, as some music critics would argue that it started as far back as the glittery disco era and the rise of mega-clubs like Studio 54, while others claim its true origins are with the thumping drum machines and synthesizers favored by the New Wave bands of the early 80s. However, the true lineage of dance music can be traced back to Manchester, England.

Known as the Madchester scene, bands like the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays combined psychedelic guitars, baggy beats and woozy effects to send hordes of sweating, glow-stick waving clubbers into a communal frenzy. From famous party-spots like the Hacienda to cavernous warehouses where DJs would spin until dawn, the rave scene was born in the late 80s and early 90s. From that moment on, dance music has seen many offshoots and reincarnations. Techno, house, jungle, drum and bass, down-tempo, dub-step, there are so many categories and subcategories of dance music that it’s impossible for even a hardcore music aficionado to keep up.

Today, all these Euro-centric monikers have been stripped away, and the style of music that’s making waves from continent to continent is known simply as Electronic Dance Music (or EDM). What makes this style different from its many predecessors? It’s not only one of the most popular styles of music in the world right now, but the musicians creating it have broken into the Top Forty, won Grammy Awards, graced the cover of Rolling Stone and are as popular in America as they are in Europe. Chances are while you’re reading this you’ve got Skrillex or Deadmau5 playing in the background. So, if you want to impress that day-glow haired rave girl (or boy) with your knowledge of EDM, here are three ways you can show off your taste.

1. Show Your Love

The best way to shout out your love of the EDM scene is to become an amateur DJ. All you need is a turntable, a crate of records and a MacBook. Of course, when a DJ performs, they usually have some type of video montage behind them. You can easily rig this up. A montage of Kate Moss on the runway, Brooklyn Decker videos, a clip from your favorite science fiction film, all of these will work.

2. Get the Gear

EDM is as much about style and fashion as it is music. In other words, you better have the gear and apparel. If surf culture has Billabong and Roxy, then EDM has JOJO ELECTRO. It’s dance-wear devoted to late nights and DJ culture, so if you’re cruising the global scene, you better be dressed to the nines. J. Crew and L.L. Bean aren’t going to cut it.

3. Start a Music Blog

EDM and the Internet age go hand in hand, so why not start a music blog? You can review albums, concerts and talk to people with the same musical interests. A blog is a way to support the EDM community and impress readers with your taste and knowledge.

EDM is the third or fourth wave of raved-up music to hit the scene, but it’s by far the most popular. If you want to ride that wave into the glorious Ibizian sunset, now is your chance. Spread the word.

Shake It Up with Tic Tac mints.

Who hasn’t used a box of Tic Tac mints as a maraca? That sound is irresistible. BUT have you downloaded the Tic Tac app?  With the Tic Tac mints app you can use your phone to “Shake It Up”.  No, it won’t help your breath but it will be fun.

The Tac Tac mints app has a clever scanner, it says, “Launching An Augmented Reality Machine” who can resist that! It sounds like a machine you would want to experience. My favorite part of the app has tips for  random acts you can do during that day to “Shake It Up”. It encourages you to do things differently and expand your horizons. There are also micro games, one of which is “Break Up The Band”. You can be Yoko Ono! The singer that comes with “Break Up The Band” is hilarious.  “Tilt and Kiss”, I won’t describe, it is really something you should download and experience.

Crafters look at the Tic Tac containers and see a whole world of possibilities other than just holding those tasty Tic Tac mints. If you are a crafter, the odds are good that there are Tic Tac mints containers in your supply room with small beads, sequins or glitter stored in them. Tic Tac mints containers make good robots.

Visit the Tic Tac website there are several options to keep you busy one of which is building word clouds out of  Tic Tacs. There is a section about little known Tic Tac facts like, the mints were created in 1969, the same year as Woodstock. That might explain the Augmented Reality Machine. Tic Tac mints are animal product free for the vegans out there and gluten-free.
I am pleased to say that this post is sponsored by Tic Tac.

"Transformers 4" Michael Bay is back! No sacrifice, no victory!

“Transformers 4” Michael Bay is back! No sacrifice, no victory!

[hana-code-insert name=’LikeArticle’ /]

Transformers fans — don’t fret any longer! The wait is over. Michael Bay has decided to carry on the tradition of his trademark heart-racing, adrenalin-pumping, action-packed blockbuster hit series, Transformers. And thank goodness. Imagine what would happen if, after the movie magic and mastery of the first three, another director took the reigns? Utter chaos. Possibly Armageddon. The event, not the movie.

It all began in 2007 with Steven Spielberg executive producing a little movie based on the popular Transformers toyline. Add Bay, who, in the mid-to-late 90’s, had been busy winning awards for music video creation and making commercials for high profile products like Coca-Cola, Nike and the Miller Brewing Company (where he won the coveted “Gold Lion” for Best Beer Campaign), according to IMDb.

What We Can Expect

As far as his movie-making habits, Michael Bay is intense. In the June 2014 release of “Transformers 4,” expect a lot of dramatic visuals, slow motion shots, helicopters set in front of a backdrop sunset, a hot chic (who cares if she can act), big explosions and at least one appearance by the film’s U.S. President. Could we maybe get a cameo from his pet Bullmastiff, Grace? IMDb’s list of Bay’s film trademarks is classic.

What We Know

  • The last three Transformers flicks have earned more than $2.7 billion (yes, that says “billion”) worldwide, according to the Huffington Post.
  • Michael Bay did some soul searching after attending the, new at the time, Universal Studios ride, “Transformers 3-D,” in Hollywood. He didn’t want anyone to start off the new franchise by screwing it up, so he hopped back on board for the next installment, as mentioned in an interview with the Huffington Post.
  • Shia LaBeouf and friends will be replaced with new faces; while new robots are sure to delight.
  • The movie will begin where it left off in Chicago and will be carried on from there, Bay explains in the interview.
  • Of course! Peter Cullen will be back as the voice of Optimus Prime, exclaims Bay to the Huffington Post.

How Can We Get to the Set?

Have you heard of a little contest called “Doritos Crash the Superbowl” contest? It’s been drawing amateur directors and commercial making hopefuls alike, into a world of consumerism and the social media voting system for 6 years. In other words, anyone makes a Doritos commercial, if it’s selected as one of five finalists, it’s posted online and votes are cast. Two winners will be determined by their online popularity and the commercial will be shown during the Superbowl, which will be played in New Orleans on CBS on Feb. 3, 2013, says USA Today. Fans will then vote between the two and, as they have in the past, the winner will win $1 million.

BUT WAIT! This year, there’s more. And it’s big! The winner gets to join Michael Bay on the set of the anticipated “Transformers 4,” which is slated to begin filming this coming winter after Bay’s current project,”Pain & Gain,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, is released and promoted.

There is another world in the making with the addition of “Transformers 4.” Sometimes it’s best for directors not to let go of their best works. What would have happened if Steven Spielberg turned over directing duties to someone else during the “Indiana Jones” series? Or if Peter Jackson dropped the reigns and hopped off the “Lord of the Rings” horse? Some things are just meant to be and Michael Bay should be the visual leader of the next Transformers.

Day 2 of the 2012 Scarefest had a packed crowd flowing into the Lexington Convention Center trying to get a glimpse of their favorite Horror and Paranormal Celebs.  Four ballrooms hosted a multitude of panels on topics ranging from Exorcism to Nightmares.  Psychic Chip Coffey held a gallery reading for attendees lucky enough to get a ticket and those in attendance were amazed with his accuracy and humor.  “Destination Truth” star Josh Gates held a question and answer panel and delighted attendees with his stories of transportation woes and local cultures while filming the show. The expo hall was teaming with fans trying to get an autograph or photo with their faves or check out one of the Paranormal attractions present. All of the days events led up to the First ever Scarefest concert, which was help on Saturday night.

“Ghost Adventures” Star Nick Groff opened the show with his amazing band playing songs from his album “The Other Side”.  Joining Groff onstage were Danny Bedrosian, who also produced the album, DJ Kos and Mike Anderson.  With a packed house waiting for Groff’s appearance, the musicians took to the stage dressed in hooded robes.  Groff and Anderson made their way through the crowd, also decked out in robes, and began the show from the audience. And once the show started, it never paused.  The intensity continued through out the set.

A heavy use of video pumping through the screens went hand-in-hand with the mood of the songs playing out onstage. A mixture of Hip-Hop, Rock and Electronica, the show was a big hit with the standing-room-only crowd.  The musicians were obviously having a great time and the audience certainly were right there with them. The  entire set was high-energy and Groff even debuted a new song off his upcoming December album.

After Groff’s set, a host of local Lexington bands played until well after Midnight.  The First Scarefest concert was a great addition to the annual event and a big hit with all of the convention attendees.
