Paranormal Reality Star Nick Groff attended the 2016 San Diego Comic Con this past weekend and he was a busy guy. Groff sat on a panel discussion with fellow Paranormal stars John Zaffis, Amy Bruni and Adam Berry to discuss their projects, participated in autograph signings in the famous San Diego Convention Center’s “sails” pavillion, and visited Camp Conival to discuss all things Paranormal.

The Conival, put on by Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist company and Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry, featured games, food and panels with some of the hottest celebs and shows at Comic Con.  Conival was totally free and open to anyone with or without a Comic Con badge.

Groff talked about the fact that when people do investigations at the famous Washoe Club in Virginia City, they often get his name come through on their EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). (I have personally experienced this during an investigation there!) He also spoke about skeptics who come on investigations with him and often leave as converts.

Groff has been very busy lately, with his shows “Paranormal Lockdown” which shows Groff and fellow investigator Katrina Weidman being locked down in a haunted location for 72 hours, and “Ghosts of Shephardstown” which has a team of Paranormal investigators checking out Paranormal claims in a small town in West Virginia.  Both shows can be found on the Destination America channel.

book

Author Alan Finn is releasing his new novel “Things Half In Shadow” on December 30th just in time for all of those post-holiday flights and days off.

Set in post Civil War Philadelphia, the story follows Edward Clark, a newspaper crime reporter with a questionable past.  Clark is happy working the crime beat and spending time with his well-to-do fiancee until his boss gives him an assignment to write a series of exposes on the city’s mediums and expose them for the frauds that everyone connected with the newspaper knows them to be.  Somewhat reluctantly, Clark joins forces with a shady medium – the beautiful, young Lucy Collins – in an effort to expose the cities other mediums and their tricks.

Finn’s writing is very descriptive and immerses the reader immediately into the world of nineteenth-century Philadelphia.  The characters are well sketched out and engaging and the book is so well written that one can become lost in the story and lose track of time.  “Things Half In Shadow” offers something for fans of many different genres – History, Paranormal, Supernatural, Crime and Magic are all explored throughout the story.  Many authors who touch on Paranormal subjects often treat them with a level of disdain that is nowhere to be found in Finn’s writing.

The book has a feel that reminded this reader of Sarah Pinborough’s novel “Mayhem” and even slightly of the television program “Ripper Street” with its ability to draw the reader into another time and place. I think everyone who picks up this book will be very pleased that they did.

“Things Half In Shadow” will be released in both paperback and ebook form on December 30th from Gallery Books.  Check your local book seller or Amazon.com for more info.

After the meet-and-greet a limited number of attendees stayed at the Washoe club and investigated the upstairs floors.  This notoriously haunted location was made famous by the Travel Channel show “Ghost Adventures” when they caught video of an apparition during an investigation.  The investigation for the St. Mary’s Paracon was a great success with visitors conducting evp sessions, taking photos and communicating with the spirits that reside within.

April 18th – 20th will find Paranormal enthusiasts taking over the historic city of Virginia City, Nevada.  The notoriously haunted city will play host to the Annual St. Mary’s Paracon, which will feature speakers, vendors, Paranormal investigations and much more.

The yearly event features tours and investigations at both the old St. Mary’s Hospital (now the St. Mary’s Art Center) and the Washoe Club, made famous on the popular Travel Channel show “Ghost Adventures”.  Speakers will include author Janice Oberding, “Paranormal Paparazzi” star Scott Gruenwald and many others.  Vendors selling Paranormal equipment, books and more will be at the event so that guests can stock up during their weekend.

CFM spoke with Director and Host Doug Carnahan about what guests can expect at this year’s event.

” The wonderful thing about the Saint Mary’s ParaCon is it has grown bigger and better every year.” says Carnahan.  “Besides bringing new speakers and special guests each year we have brought in some great entertainment to kick off our Friday night Meet and Greet at the world renown Washoe Saloon. We have DJ-Kos joining with some amazing music and video show. We have also added a 2nd investigation to this year’s list of activities.

Washoe Club

Washoe Club

“For the 1st time we will be investigating the very haunted Washoe Millionaires Club upstairs from the saloon. This is an exciting addition to the Saint Mary’s ParaCon. Saturday will be full of great speaker, special guests, vendors and an afterhours investigation of the Old Saint Mary’s Hospital with is always very exciting. ”

Is this event something that only seasoned Paranormal investigators would enjoy, or can newbies find things for them as well?

“We have a lot of people who are seasoned investigators who join us every year for the ParaCon, but we all encourage people who are new to the field and want to learn and know more to join us. Everyone can learn something new at these events. There is no better place for newbies to come and learn from seasoned and professionals within the field.”

St. Mary's Hospital Virginia City, NV

St. Mary’s Hospital Virginia City, NV

Why did Doug Carnahan decide to direct and host this annual event?

“I have been involved in the paranormal field well over 30 years, long before it was considered “Cool”. I was thrown head first into the world of the unknown as a result of being physically attacked from an entity resulting in an extreme haunting. Over the years since I have encountered thousands of people with thousands of questions about the paranormal. I thought it would be wonderful if we could bring all these people together and learn from each other’s experiences in the field. I noticed that there were events popping up but mainly on the East Coast and the South, but not so much on the West Coast. The key for me was to find the right location and environment to be able to put on such an event, when I came across the Old Saint Mary’s Hospital and the town of Virginia City, NV I know it was a perfect fit for an event like this. I started the Saint Mary’s ParaCon 4 years ago and have been going strong ever since. I have also taken on a directing and hosting a 2nd ParaCon at the renowned “Preston Castle” in Ione, CA. This Sept 2014 will also be a 4th Annual event for that location. So to put it in a nut shell I saw a need and filled it!”

Fright Dome at Circus Circus has been scaring visitors for the past 11 years and has quickly become one of the country’s premiere Halloween attractions.  This year, they are increasing the number of haunted houses for the first time with a sixth stand-alone maze based on Fortress Features Horror film “The Collection”. The isolation-type maze, appropriately titled “Hotel Argento” will take only upgraded fast pass guests into the depths of the Collector’s lair. Separated from friends and forced to enter alone, guests will forge their way through traps and snares, the Collector’s demented assortment of barely coherent victims, museum-esque displays of lifeless prey and much more — all while being hunted themselves. Will they make it out… or will they become the next victim added to his meticulous collection?

Owner and creator of the Fright Dome, Jason Egan, spoke about the new collaboration. “We’ve always had one of the top haunted attractions in the nation and I have been able to team up with amazing movie partners for incredible themes over the years. I couldn’t think of a better fit for our isolation-style haunted house, or for any haunted house for that matter, than the story behind THE COLLECTOR. The overall premise behind the movie is every horror fan’s worst nightmare- being singled out and hunted by a devious villain. I’m thrilled that our fans have embraced this event every year allowing us to grow and make this year truly the most ominous yet.”

Local celebrities turned out to support both the Fright Dome and the NSPCA.  “Evil Dead: The Musical” was one of the local productions to support the event.  The shows producer/director Sirc Michaels said “The Nevada SPCA has done a lot for animals in this community, and when they asked us to walk the black carpet at the Fright Dome for them, it seemed like the perfect fit for us. Just about everyone involved in the show has pets, and we understand the need to show support for a charity like NSPCA. We encourage everyone to do what they can to support no-kill shelters in the community.”Performers from other local shows “Vegas: The Show”, “Jabbawockeez”, “Pin-up”, “Jersey Boys” and comedian Murray Sawchuck also came out to show their support.

felt and what unfamiliar and interesting things they tuned into on a psychic level.

David Dossett at the 2012 Las Vegas Paracon

Actor and Paranormal Investigator David Dossett to make his second appearance at the 2013 Las Vegas Paracon at Binion’s Gambling Hall in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.

David’s interest in the paranormal began when he was a child in Virginia, where he lived on a Civil War battlefield with his family. He had a lot of experiences with the paranormal as a child.  His experiences started again once his mother died.  He has had visits from her spirit since that time. David joined a well-known paranormal group called “TAPS West Coast Team” in which his friend Britt Griffith (Ghost Hunters)  is the lead investigator.  David later became an investigator for that group.  He also recently appeared on the Travel Channel show “Paranormal Challenge”.

Many people will remember Susan Slaughter from her stints on both “Ghost Hunters Academy” and “Ghost Hunters International”.  Susan will be a special guest at the 2013 Las Vegas Paracon which will be held on August 23-25th at Binion’s Gambling Hall on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas.

We asked Susan to tell us a little bit more about herself and her interest in the Paranormal.

Slaughter was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She went to school for Fashion and Costume design and made fashion my creative outlet in life. But, ever since she can remember, she has had her own supernatural experiences. Growing up with a very spiritually inclined family, she has always had an open vision to spirits and energies. Being a paranormal investigator has become her spiritual quest to search for the truth behind why spirits are trapped between walls and realms that coincide with everyday life.

Learning how people are affected by these spirits and how we affect them has always been at the forefront of Susan’s curiosity. Aside from having profound love and curiosity for all things paranormal, her favorite pastimes consist of keeping up on good horror films and going to concerts and shows. She spends most of her free time enjoying nature; hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating, and traveling to new exotic places are among her favorite things to do.

Ashley Troub

Former “Ghost Hunters” Team Member and Current TAPS West Coast Team Member Ashley Troub will be a special guest at the upcoming 2013 Las Vegas Paracon which will be held August 23-25th at Binion’s Gambling Hall in downtown Las Vegas.

People might recognize Ashley from her time on “Ghost Hunters”, but we wanted to give you more information on another of the 2013 Las Vegas Paracon’s special guests.

Ashley Troub of California was born into a life of traveling. At a young age, she moved from location to location where she would find a passion for the paranormal.
From the start, she knew two things would happen in her life: She’d become a makeup artist, and she’d become a paranormal investigator. Luckily for her, she successfully ventured into both in her teens.
Her first break into the paranormal world was in Ventura, California. There, her best friend introduced her to a local team that skyrocketed her passion and love for the world of investigating. She spent the next few years working closely with the team while learning and traveling around the southern California area, looking for new places to explore and learn from.
During the day when she wasn’t hunting ghosts and running around in the dark, Ashley would serve coffee and do makeup for film and print.
In 2012, Ashley was offered a position to join the TAPS team on Ghost Hunters as an investigator in training. She traveled with the team absorbing any and all information that she could.
Ashley now spends most of her time working with the TAPS West Coast team to train and continue her education in the field, as well as spending her days on makeup when she can.
