Cast members from the Cinemax show “Outcast” were on hand at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con to talk about their unique show.

The show, revolves around Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit) who has had a series of misfortunes in his life; his mother would beat him as a child and he was accused of attacking his own daughter. After attending an exorcism in his native town, he is convinced his mother and his wife were possessed and he was not the source of them going bad. He therefore teams up with Reverend Anderson (Philip Glenister) to try and save people that are possessed by demons while putting up with the residents of his town who think he’s bad news and would deserve to be in jail.

The show was created by Robert Kirkman, the man behind “The Walking Dead” and has a great mixture of realism and Superatural elements that should appeal to fans of shows like “Supernatural” and films like “The Conjuring”.

The new season of “Outcast” airs on Cinemax on Fridays.

The formula for homemade soap.
I would become/pass as a zombie that sells soap.

CDC has instructions for how to be prepared for a zombie (pandemic) preparedness. Their graphic novel, “Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic” is available as a free download. “Readers follow Todd, Julie, and their dog Max as a strange new disease begins spreading, turning ordinary people into zombies.”

Kinemortophobia is a real condition, the person is afraid of zombies or afraid of becoming one.

Originally, Zombies were only found in Haiti (Haitian French: zombi) among people who practiced Vodou (Voodoo).  Like the unforgivable, Imperius Curse (Imperio) the deceased would be unable to control his actions. The bokor would capture the person’s soul and then be able to control the reanimated individual. The  person’s soul had to be reclaimed by God for the person to be set free.

The Magic Island by W.B. Seabrook in 1929 was one of the first books to bring the Vodou zombie to Western culture.  This is the sensationalized account of a narrator who encounters voodoo cults in Haiti and their resurrected thralls. According to Time  the book “introduced ‘zombi’ into U.S. speech.”

Arthur, Wade Davis who, in his travels to Haiti in the 1980s, claimed that this ‘zombified state’ could be induced  through the use of compounds such as tetrodotoxin (toxic substance derived from puffer fish). This paralyzing agent is thought to reduce heart and respiration rates to such an extent as to leave the subject displaying symptoms of clinical death, and, hence, they are treated as such. Having been buried, it is believed that the subject is then exhumed and partially revived by its possessor who then uses the ‘zombie’ for their own personal gain (i.e. manual labour etc.). The understandably intense trauma suffered by the victim may play a major role in the manifestation of their zombie-like attributes (confusion, limited speech, memory loss etc)… The definitive history of zombies. Can be found on the website Zombies Defined.

Haitian zombies were slaves doing the masters will, a product of magic and evil.

Black and white movies gave us zombies that walked with arms outstretched. They were reanimated for the purpose of killing. While they seemed to be without intelligence, they were always able to figure out how to bust through doors and windows. The survivors had a sharp axe and the strength to swing it.

My Zombie survival list explained.

Magic has given way to the reality of epidemics and pandemics. Now viruses turn people into flesh eating, brain eating, intelligent beings, fortunately they can still be killed with an axe.

People in horror movies never look into the back seat before they get into a vehicle. Someone in your group will be forced to say, “How could you not see the person/thing in the back seat?” So, remember rule #31, Tallahassee (Zombieland)said, “Check the back seat.”

In the future, people are dirty. A nuclear reactor can be repaired with bubble gum and string, but they can’t seem to make soap. When the living population becomes covered in lice and filth, my homemade soap can be bartered for supplies. Lavender scented money!

Liv Moore (iZombie), doesn’t have it that bad. My skin is already pasty white, passing wouldn’t be that difficult.

It turns out, with a few exceptions, that if you are prepared for one apocalypse, you are prepared for them all. You can find a list of items you need on the CDC zombie preparedness website.

“Fear The Walking Dead” is arguably the most anticipated show of the Summer.  The show takes place in Los Angeles at the start of the Zombie outbreak which we follow in “The Walking Dead” universe during the time when Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is in the hospital in a coma.

The new show follows Travis (Cliff Curtis)  and Madison (Kim Dickens), teachers who have recently moved in together and who are trying to blend their two families. Madison’s son Nick (Frank Dillane) is a junkie and her daughter Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) skips classes and can’t wait to leave town – clearly Madison is battling TWD’s Lori Grimes for the Mother of the Year Award.

Travis has his own problems with his son Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie) who doesn’t want to spend any time with him and hates the new family he has been thrust into.

The show definitely came into being with a whimper and many fans were apathetic about the first episode.  Being episode 1, all of the characters and the world they inhabit have to be introduced and this takes time.   I don’t think the pace of the whole show can necessarily be judged on this first episode.  As fans might remember, Season One of “The Walking Dead” started off sort of slow as well as we got to meet all of the characters and their world.

It’s interesting as a fan of TWD to see how people are first reacting to the Zombie outbreak.  The confusion and disbelief of what is actually going on and the realization that people are actually coming back to life is interesting to see for those of us who have already seen all of what is to come.

The episode definitely had pace issues – there was a constant feeling of waiting for something to happen – and as one who is used to the constant non-stop pace of TWD – it is a bit frustrating.  I don’t think it’s fair to  be able to judge a series from one episode so I will be watching future episodes of “Fear the Walking Dead” hoping to see some of the great character development and heart-stopping action we see in “The Walking Dead”.

“Fear the Walking Dead” airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.

As fans of the Walking Dead know, Terminus is not a place one wants to visit.  A place one hopes might be a sanctuary turned out to be a living nightmare of cannibalism, and one of the creepier characters in Terminus is Gareth, played by actor Andrew J West.  West was recently at the Walker Stalker Fan Fest in San Diego during the 2015 San Diego Comic Con to talk to fans and answer questions on his scary alter-ego.

When West originally went in to audition for the show, he had no idea what role they were looking at him for.  He knew the casting directors from other projects but he wasn’t told anything about the role.  He was given a random monologue that wasn’t even actually from the show, but the material was very dark.  He got the job and went in for wardrobe fittings but still had no idea who he was to play. Showrunner Scott Gimple called West into his office to tell him a little about the role but it was still a little vague.  West went and read the comics and figured out his character was based on “Chris” in the books and he grinned from ear to ear, knowing what kinds of things he would be able to portray onscreen.

West says that the Termites weren’t always bad people.  “Terminus started out as a peaceful community.  They invited people in and let them come and go as they pleased.  Then they (the termites) got overtaken and beaten down.  The Church (in the Termius set) serves as a reminder to them that they tried to create a peaceful community and they can’t ever go back (to that)”.

West sees Gareth as an “unassuming guy who wasn’t a born leader.  He would have preferred to defer to someone else.  He wasn’t a born Sociopath.  Gareth isn’t a full-blown Psychopath, he is a Sociopath. The trauma that he suffered led to a point where something switched in his mind. He feels that human beings aren’t as valuable as they once were.  And that is the most disturbing thing about Gareth.  Human life could never mean much to Gareth again.”

Fans were able to ask questions and one fan remarked that they had been told not to ask for hugs and West replied that he would hug the fan and the fan said he wouldn’t hug West.  West quipped, “I already had lunch what are you worried about?”  Another fan asked if Gareth had an Instagram what would be on it and West joked “food pics, artistic food pics”.

When asked what he had learned from portraying Gareth, West said he learned “some great seasoning techniques…..learned my way around a barbecue…..”  He said that the role also made him “think a lot about how to survive in an apocalypse” and that “we would all be surprised by how we would act in extreme circumstances.”

One of the better questions was from a fan who wanted to know if Rick had spared Gareth’s life, would Gareth have been able to change.  “No” says West.  “They (the Termites) wouldn’t have gone out of their way to hunt Rick’s group down, but if they crossed paths again, they would kill Rick’s group.  But they (the Termites) would keep doing things the same way that they had been, and Rick knew that.  That’s why he did what he did.”

Clearly Andrew J West was a great guest and a fan favorite at the Walker Stalker Fan Fest.

The Walker Stalker Fan Fest, which brings starts of shows like The Walking Dead together with fans, held a great event at Petco Park during the 2015 San Diego Comic Con last weekend.

Star Tyler James Williams who played beloved character “Noah” on the hit show spoke about the show, his life in showbiz and took questions from fans during his 45 minute panel.

William’s character, Noah, was introduced in the hospital in Atlanta where Beth was taken after being abducted.  Williams originally was only meant to be on the show for 3 episodes.  He was meant to die in the hospital but didn’t know exactly when he would be killed off.

He and Emily Kinney who played “Beth” on the show “didn’t set out to play the scenes as if there were a budding romance between them”, says Williams but “when I watched them when they aired, it looked like we did it on purpose”.

The cast and crew of The Walking Dead are a big family and whenever a character dies, the whole group feels the loss. Noah’s death was particularly heart-wrenching for both the creators and the fans alike.

Williams said that “when I got the script it wasn’t completely clear how he would die.  It just said “Noah gets ripped apart”.  I wasn’t sure what that meant.  When we got there on the day, we just worked it all out.”  Williams feels that when Noah says to Glenn “You have to go on”, it was a very important moment and meant more than just going on without Noah and leaving him to die, it meant that he had to continue to be a good person and fight for their way of life.

For the death scene in the revolving doors, they made a bust of William’s face by making a mock up with a material similar to that which they use to make casts and then creating a life-like replica of his face.  Williams has some selfies with the bust which he said was pretty creepy.  He also hasn’t really been able to go through revolving doors since shooting the episode.  He would be out with friends and he wouldn’t want to go through the doors and his friends wouldn’t understand it because no one had seen the episode yet and he couldn’t talk about it.

Everyone always talks about how The Walking Dead is a fantastic cast of actors and they have a great fanbase and Williams agrees.  He is “getting used to the Walking Dead world.  Once you are a part of it you are a part of it for life.  Years and years down the line, you will still be talking about it.” (talking about the show).

“There are great actors on this show.  Everyone is trained and focused. ” Williams says.  “When you have all of your characters driving towards one goal, that is when the show is the best. ”

Unlike other projects, the actors of the Walking Dead have no egos.  “The tone is set by Andy (Lincoln who plays Rick on the show) and he has no ego whatsoever.”.

“The fans are a big part of the show and are always very supportive and what makes the show so amazing” concluded Williams.

Popular Star of “The Walking Dead” delights fans at Las Vegas event.

David Morrissey plays a villain really well.  Just ask anyone who has seen him as “The Governor” on “The Walking Dead”.  He is the guy everyone hates – he burned down the prison, he killed beloved character Hershel – this is not a nice dude.  When Morrissey attended the San Diego Comic Con after his first season on the show, 10,000 people booed him when he walked out on stage.

It’s a testament to what a great actor he is that he is so hated, because Morrissey is a really nice guy and fantastic to all his fans.  His acting career has spanned more than 20 years in everything from film to television to mini-series and even a very memorable stint on “Doctor Who”.

Fans of this popular actor lined up to pack the auditorium to ask questions about his time on the show and find out more about their favorite series, “The Walking Dead”.

dmarticle2

When asked what his favorite character was to play, Morrissey said “when you do a role, you get so involved (in that character) that becomes your favorite.  Then you go on to the next role and that one is now your favorite.” The good thing about working on “The Walking Dead” was that you were “constantly working from the time you got to the set.  There wasn’t a lot of sitting around.”, which is very common on other film and television sets.

One of the biggest challenges Morrissey faced as “the Governor” was wearing the iconic eyepatch.  After a long day of filming, he would take off the eyepatch and his eye would have a hard time adjusting to light and he would have to drive home using one eye.  He would also constantly bump into things on-set as his depth perception was off.

dmarticle3

One fan asked about the last day on the set of Scott Wilson who played beloved character Hershel, who was killed by David Morrissey’s character on the show.  Morrissey said everyone on the crew wore suspenders on that day to honor Hershel who wore suspenders on the show.  Morrissey and Wilson are good friends in real life and Morrissey said that was a really hard day on set. “There were lots of tears”, he said, “I felt really bad.  Whenever you lose someone on the show it’s really tough because everyone gets on really well.”   He went on to say that the Governor knew that by killing Hershel it would mean that “he would be killed.  Michonne was right there and she was really the target of his hatred (for killing his daughter, Penny).”  But he knew that by killing Hershel that he, in turn, would be killed.

dmarticle4

When going back in this past season for the flashback scene, Morrissey says “the Governor came back really quickly. Once I put that eyepatch on, I was right back into character.”

He went on to delight the audience with his glee at some of his favorite Zombie killing scenes from the show, and chuckled recalling some of the more brutal scenes in the series.

dmarticle5

Morrissey was definitely on everyone’s list of must see panels and photos ops at the convention, and if you have the chance to see him at an event near you, I highly recommend you check it out!

Lou Ferrigno said that he liked coming to conventions because when he was growing up, there were no conventions – they didn’t exist.  Fans didn’t have a chance to meet their favorite stars and get a photo or an autograph with them.  Now, conventions give the fans the chance to be able to meet their idols.

Sean Patrick Flanery  summed up how many of the stars feel about conventions in the video below:

Jason David Frank spoke a bit about ConTv, which will allow fans to view panels and other cons that they might be unable to attend. This will give fans the feeling of being in the panels and on the floor at the cons that they can’t be at.

The High Roller event was a great start to a weekend of great panels, autograph session and photos at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Fan favorite Norman Reedus was on hand for the second year in a row to the delight of the hundreds of fans who attend the con sporting Daryl inspired shirts with phrases like “If Daryl Dies, We Riot”, and “Mrs. Daryl Dixon”.  Several fans were even dressed up as Reedus’ onscreen character for the Wizard World costume contest.  Reedus was such a popular draw last year that he missed all but the last 10 minutes of the panel he was scheduled to be on due to the sheer number of photo ops that were sold.

This year was no exception.  Fans waited in lines for hours to get a chance to speak to the actor and get a favorite item autographed or have a professional photo taken of them with their idol.  Reedus was very generous and caring and took time to speak to each fan and make them feel welcome at the event.

The cable channel revealed today that it is in “the initial stages of developing a companion series” to its hyper-successful adaptation of the long-running Image Comics series co-created and written by Robert Kirkman about a group of human survivors in a world filled with the undead. Kirkman is part of the group developing the spinoff, acting as executive producer on the project alongside Walking Deadexecs Gail Anne Hurd and David Alpert.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman in a statement included the network’s announcement, adding that “the opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.” AMC president Charlie Collier promised that the show would feature “an entirely new story and cast of characters,” while offering “another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

More details are sure to be released soon about the new series, which is set to premiere in 2015.  Catch current episodes of “The Walking Dead” on AMC Sunday nights at 9pm.

Yes I know about MST3K:
If you’re wondering how he eats and breathes
and other science facts (la-la-la),
Just repeat to yourself, “It’s just a show,
I should really just relax…”

I am not a die hard fan but I have watched a few episodes.  I have questions.

1. Working under the premise it is a sin to kill someone, is it a sin to kill a zombie that isn’t attacking you?

2. Where is he getting all those arrows? Even if he reuses them, they have to be damaged.

3. Are there ugly female survivors?

4. The women are plucking their eyebrows, washing and cutting their hair why aren’t they bathing?

5. They don’t seem to have a lot of supplies, where are they getting tampons?

6. Why can’t zombies use their arms? They can remember how to walk upstairs but not open a door?

The Hyatt Regency at the Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport is gearing up for the 2013 Texas Frightmare Weekend.  Conceived by Loyd and Sue Cryer in 2005 as a three-day horror convention, the event takes place annually in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. True to its motto, “The Southwest’s Premier Horror Convention”, their goal is to provide fans with an unrivaled experience by celebrating all aspects of genre films. Texas Frightmare Weekend hosts celebrity appearances, autograph signings, screenings, exclusive parties and horror memorabilia vendors from all over the country. The event is also extremely proud to have featured the rising talents of many Texas “Frightmakers” in screenings, panel discussions and Q & A’s.

After humble beginnings at the tiny Grapevine Convention Center in Grapevine, TX, TFW (as it has begun to be called by attendees) is arguably the largest horror convention in the nation. The event boasts over 10,000 attendees annually and has hosted genre legends such as George A. Romero, Clive Barker, Malcom McDowell, Robert Englund, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Cary Elwes and hundreds more.

In 2012 the event moved to the Hyatt Regency inside the DFW to make room for its growing fan base. The new venue provides 93,000 square feet of event space (compared to the Grapevine Convention Center at 23,500 square feet) and 800 rooms.
