The Gloomers, a new animated cartoon series debuting at Comic Con this year, released its first Halloween episode today.

The Halloween episode stars famed horror director and Evil Dead II writer Scott Spiegel, who plays himself in the cartoon.

The Gloomers series is the brainchild of Charles Mechem, who was CEO of Taft Broadcasting, which owned Hanna Barbera for over 20 years. The Gloomers includes Neal Barbera, son of Joe Barbera, as a writer. Neal Barbera wrote a number of classic Hanna Barbera scripts, including Yogi Bear and Scooby Doo and many others.

No matter how bad your day is, The Gloomers day is always worse.

Follow The Gloomers:

THE GLOOMERS is an animated series that follows the trials and tribulations of the hysterically funny heirs to misfortune, the Gloomer family. Crashing the classic Hanna-Barbera animation of the Jetsons and Flintstones with a post-modern comedy slant, the show is both a reflection and an antidote to our modern day “gloomy” outlook. We all have bad days, sometimes even the kind of day that plunges your entire life into chaos. Now, imagine if every day was like that…

Enter The Gloomers.

From generation to generation the Gloomers have endured the worst bad-luck streak in recorded history. The torch of tribulation is carried proudly by the patriarch, Dooman Gloomer, a hapless inventor who, despite his consistent failings, still holds out hope for that one elusive moment that will break the chain and let the sun shine in. Sadly, that day never, ever comes.

Dooman’s best friend, Moses, a 262 year old parrot that has been in the Gloomer family for generations, knows this all to well and amuses himself by reminding poor Dooman every chance he gets.

Dooman’s wife, Lotta, stands by his side through all the explosions, fires, electrocutions and falls that happen with common frequency.

Their detached son Junior has inherited the Gloomer luck, but since he has retreated to the basement in his helmet, he does not yet realize the magnitude of his potential misery. His only friend is a Marcel Marceau-like spider named Cunape.

Somehow, the curse passed over little sister Notta who, oblivious to the doom and despair that surrounds her, floats effortlessly through life on a cloud of hope that always avoids the dark rain cloud that follows the rest of the Gloomer clan, which also includes a clinically depressed dog, Lugubrious, and a robotic cat named Despair.
Aimed at the kid in all of us who wishes they could simply laugh away bad luck; aimed at anyone who ever felt that they were not very different from Charlie Brown or Wile E. Coyote.

The Gloomers reminds us that no matter how bad your day was, chances are The Gloomers was worse. Kids, teens and adults will be attracted to the show’s bizarre sense of comedy and unfortunate circumstances, but it is the universality of the characters and the Gloomers unconditional love for each other that will secure the series a fiercely loyal following.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is the much-anticipated sequel to the indie cult classic, The Boondock Saints. The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. With a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins Jr., Star Trek) and a sexy FBI operative (Julie Benz, TV’s “Dexter”) hot on their trail…the Saints are back!

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is written and directed by Troy Duffy, starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, Billy Connolly, Clifton Collins Jr., and Julie Benz. Produced by Chris Brinker and Don Carmody, and executive produced by Lloyd Segan and Rob Fried.

The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day will open in theaters on Friday, October 30.

Los Angeles (October 27, 2009) – Circle of Eight, Paramount Digital Entertainment’s (PDE) original supernatural thriller, produced in association with Mountain Dew’s Green Label Studios, premieres today exclusively on MySpace. Three episodes will launch the10-part series, which combines unique elements of gaming and social media to propel the story forward.

Viewers can tune into MySpace at now to watch the first three episodes of the series. Episodes four and five will be available on November 3, and each week following one of the remaining five episodes will be available to viewers on MySpace through the finale on December 8.

Circle of Eight tells the story of a young woman who moves into an historic building, The Dante, where she encounters an assortment of neighbors harboring a mysterious secret that unravels in a chain of deaths and supernatural interactions. Multiple levels of interactive content enhance the audience’s connection with Circle of Eight, including hidden clues, an online and mobile game, and exclusive material that can be unlocked through game play.

“Circle of Eight shows our ongoing commitment to launch studio-quality entertainment on digital platforms,” said Thomas Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment. “With strong, mutually beneficial relationships with brands such as MySpace, Mountain Dew, Adobe and Blockbuster, we can launch premium quality content in the digital window and continue to monetize Circle of Eight on additional platforms, multiple windows and in international territories.”

Along with distributing the series, MySpace’s social-networking features allow viewers to share and embed the content, interact with the series through social gaming and content, and broadcast their thoughts via forums and commenting.

“MySpace’s exclusive distribution of Circle of Eight speaks directly to our goal of providing content to our users in an innovative and interactive manner,” said Jason Kirk, VP of Video and Entertainment. “The program matches up nicely to our strengths within multiple areas of entertainment and with a younger demographic. We’re pleased to be working with Paramount Digital Entertainment and all companies involved to bring the series to such a large audience through both online and offline routes.”

Following the online run on MySpace, Circle of Eight will be available for rent exclusively at participating BLOCKBUSTER® stores, as well as by mail and through BLOCKBUSTER On Demand®. The full-length film will have additional scenes and a surprise alternate ending.

“We are thrilled to bring such an innovative entertainment experience to our customers,” said Bill Lee, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer at Blockbuster. “This is one more indication of Blockbuster’s continued commitment to deliver exclusive content to consumers on as many screens as possible, whether that’s through our stores, by mail or through our on demand service.”

All sponsoring companies are heavily involved in marketing Circle of Eight to raise awareness for the series and its multiplatform experience.

Mountain Dew plays a critical role in the Circle of Eight storyline. One of the characters in the series joins the Green Label Art community and creates a unique, custom-designed Green Label Art bottle. The bottle is also featured in the online game where it unlocks deeper mysteries in the Circle of Eight storyline. Green Label Art is Mountain Dew’s limited edition series of collectable aluminum bottles designed by a select group of artists from the world of contemporary art and culture.

In addition to its organic product integration into the story of Circle of Eight, Mountain Dew is promoting the series at stops on the Dew Action Sports Tour, in movie theaters and on television.

“From the start of our collaboration on this project, it’s been essential that Mountain Dew has an authentic purpose within the Circle of Eight storyline and provides value in the interactive experience,” said Frank Cooper, SVP and Chief Consumer Engagement Officer, Pepsi-Cola North American Beverages. “Paramount Digital Entertainment and Milchan/Van Eyssen shared our vision and the final result is innovative digital content that we believe is engaging and entertaining.”

“Working with Mountain Dew, Adobe and MySpace enabled us to create a richly textured story that takes advantage of the multiple media and resources they made available to us,” said executive producer Alexandra Milchan. “Viewers can decide what they want their Circle of Eight experience to be, from passive viewing to passionate involvement.”

Circle of Eight creators produced a unique interactive experience for viewers across operating systems and devices using the Adobe® Flash® Platform and Creative Suite® 4 software. Adobe tools and technologies were used in the majority of the workflow stages for both the filmed entertainment and interactive production, including a mobile application and gaming widget. PDE is able to deliver the multiple interactive elements of Circle of Eight to viewers across devices using Adobe Flash Player and Adobe® AIR®, because of efforts by the Open Screen Project, an industry-wide initiative led by Adobe and supported by PDE and close to 50 other industry leaders, to enable people to engage with rich Internet experiences across any device, anywhere.

“Creating and delivering an interactive digital Web series requires a powerful set of tools, and the Adobe Flash Platform combined with Adobe Creative Suite offered PDE a complete end-to-end solution,” said Jim Guerard, general manager and vice president for Dynamic Media at Adobe. “Circle of Eight is a highly engaging and interactive viewer experience, and because it will be viewed using Adobe Flash Player, which is on more than 98 percent of Internet-connected desktops worldwide, fans everywhere can easily participate in each new online episode.”

A Milchan/Van Eyssen production, Circle of Eight, stars DJ Qualls (Road Trip, All About Steve) and rising stars Austin Highsmith and Ryan Doom. Milchan/Van Eyssen is the collaboration between producer Alexandra Milchan (Righteous Kill, Street Kings) and director David Van Eyssen (BMW Film Series The Hire). The company is located at Paramount Pictures with a first-look producing deal for digital media with PDE, the first of its kind for the studio.

Circle of Eight is directed by Stephen Cragg (Reaper, ER, NCIS), written by Dave Brewman and Brian Horiuchi, produced by Alexandra Milchan and David Van Eyssen and executive produced by Jamie Boscardin Martin (production supervisor for Bruno, Borat). Michael Lohmann (Boston Legal, The Guardian) served as director of photography and April Webster (Star Trek, Mission Impossible 3) and Scott David served as casting director. Interactive creative producer is Sean Naughton, who has served as cinematic director for Microsoft Games Studios and executive producer on Sony’s Quantum of Solace interactive site.

PDE also enlisted one of the most talented film composers working today, Mark Mothersbaugh (the upcoming film Ramona and Beezus, Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou), to provide original music for Circle of Eight.

soul electricLegendary House Music producer Roy Davis, Jr. and long-time ally Los Angeles area club promoter and producer Juan Hoerni (pronounced Her-nee) have joined forces to create Soul Electric Records. Soul Electric, with offices based in Chicago and Los Angeles, will feature R&B, house, hip-hop and rap artists, along with special mix tape and dance remix projects. Soul Electric’s first release is Young, Gifted & Black by Chicago native J. Noize, who has a direct personal relationship with Davis and Hoerni.

Soul Electric Records is a logical extension of a 10-year professional and personal friendship between Davis and Hoerni. Davis is a highly respected house music producer and DJ hailing from Chicago, with an extensive production and dance remix track record involving virtually every key artist in urban music since the early 90’s. Hoerni is known for putting on innumerable concerts and parties throughout the greater Los Angeles region, as well as creator of Cha Cha Project Recordings.

“I had been doing work for a lot of different artists, and I reached a point where I wanted to do something different, more commercial…when it came to starting Soul Electric, I was looking for a partner. When I brought it up to Juan, he was anxious to be a part of it and said, ‘Whenever you’re ready to start, I’m ready’,” explains Davis about the creation of Soul Electric.

Davis and Hoerni pored over the details of their vision of Soul Electric Records and found a convenient first artist in Davis’ own brother, 24-year-old producer and rapper J. Noize. J. Noize (Jason Davis) had his own buzz in Chicago by virtue of winning various beat battles, including the influential Dynamic Producers 2005. The project, Young, Gifted & Black, is scheduled to hit retail and most major music download services in fall 2009.

Young, Gifted & Black bucks trendy “me-first” fare and offers insightful messages that emphasize family, community and a way out from a seemingly endless cycle of poverty, crime and corruption. The first single “Find Him” revolves around finding a positive direction in life and features the vocal strength of veteran R&B diva Terry Dexter. Prior to the release of “Find Him,” a remix tape is planned to help create a street buzz and awareness of Soul Electric Records and its roster, including J. Noize, hip-hop/R&B vocalist Manny and songwriter and artist D-Illa.

Davis admits to the luxury of having his younger brother J. Noize as the first artist on Soul Electric.

“The best first artist to work with was J. I worked with other artists – and there will be more artists to come – but since he was right there in my face and also putting out consistently good music, I felt he was a solid choice.”

Davis and Hoerni are Executive Producers of Young, Gifted & Black, as well as producers of several songs on the CD, while allowing J. Noize enough space to develop his musical dream. To that end, even more family is involved, including another brother, songwriter/artist D-Illa—whose soon to be released solo project is titled Products & Goods—and nephew Yung Nef (also a producer) who also contributed to the project.

Roy Davis, Jr. began his career as a DJ at the tender age of 12, and was influenced by local hometown Chicago house music spinners DJ Pierre, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Lil’ Louis and Marshall Jefferson. Davis quickly picked up the nuances of working a crowd and honed his craft to the point where he surpassed the aforementioned and rapidly became the go-to house and dance-remix producer/DJ in Chicago. Davis’ reputation spread around the world and he is now in demand in such places as Dubai, Tokyo, England, Australia and France. As his reputation grew, Davis was approached by numerous acts for his incendiary dance remixes, which have heightened visibility for the likes of Seal, Daft Punk, Jill Scott, Eric Benet, Terry Dexter, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Patti LaBelle,  and Christina Milian. In the summer of 2009, Davis released a well-received solo album, God, Life, Music, on the Chicago-based label Largetek. The experimental effort features R&B, Electronic dance, spacey hip-hop and more, with input by Chicago area artists Dexter, J. Noize, Yung Nef, XL, Manny and Erin Martin.

Juan Hoerni began his career as a publicist for a high-tech firm in Silicon Valley after graduating in 1998 from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Communications. The Mountain View, California native gravitated to music PR and concert promotion when he discovered that the high-tech field left him unchallenged.

“I used to produce radio shows at KMEL-FM and college radio stations. I took all that I learned and started DJ-ing in clubs in the area.”

A one-off house music concert booking turned into a full-time entrepreneurial adventure when Hoerni’s reputation grew as a major club event specialist. Hoerni is also the creator of Cha-Cha Project Recordings, an eclectic collection of experimental music that he wrote, produced and collaborated with several DJs, including DJ Spinna and Davis.

“I called Roy’s manager for an event I was throwing in 1999, and then I began using him all the time, because Roy knows how to get a crowd started,” Hoerni explains on how he and Davis met.

Davis elaborates, “Juan used to fly me out for weeks at a time, and I’d play at boat parties and huge warehouses that he would rent out. Our friendship grew throughout time, and then we eventually started producing records. We realized we had the same goals in common and liked the same broad range of music. So, we decided to go ahead, push the button and make it happen. It was always in the back of my head, when I was shopping J-Noize’s project around, to start a label.”

The idea of Soul Electric Records became reality in January 2009, and accelerated once J-Noize finished his solo effort.

“Soul Electric- the name itself- is not limited to hip-hop. It could be house, soul and other avenues, as long as it has substance and soul within it,” Hoerni concludes.

When I do a review I like to pick my favorite track and after listening to every track several times it is difficult to pick a favorite. Every track is perfect in a different way. The songs go from heartbreaking to the playful “Get Outta Town” with great lyrics like “It’s been one of those days for a year. “

The title song “Why Don’t You Stay” broke my heart; it is sweeps you up in her voice like the arms of a lover. The song is so beautifully sung, played and written you can “see” the song in your mind…Curtis singing. The last two people in a rooftop club. Lonely city lights in the background. A man in a uniform dancing with the woman he loves. Parting forced upon them by circumstance, the price paid for war. “a little bit longer, a little bit closer to the end of this song. “   They are alone and lonely together.

Shannon Curtis has a warm, rich voice that puts you in a dreamy mood. Every woman needs a copy of this CD.

Beautiful voice and environmentally friendly packaging, who could ask for more?

After reading over my account of “Why Don’t You Stay” I had to laugh. I am sure that Curtis has a totally different story in her head with the song, but that’s ok song writers never know what their songs are really about.

LOS ANGELES (October 14, 2009)—AFI FEST 2009 presented by Audi today announced the complete lineup of films for the 23rd edition of the Festival, including the Closing Night Gala, Centerpiece Screening, Tributes and Special Presentations.

The Weinstein Company’s A SINGLE MAN has been selected as the AFI FEST Closing Night Gala presentation. A SINGLE MAN will make its US Premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Thursday, November 5, 2009.

Sony Pictures Classics’ THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS has been selected as AFI FEST’s Centerpiece Screening Gala presentation. THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS will make its US Premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Monday, November 2, 2009.

The Closing Night Gala presentation of A SINGLE MAN features the directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford from his script adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s acclaimed novel. The film follows a day in the life of a gay British college professor in Los Angeles as he attempts to cope with the death of his partner. Ford’s work helming the project and Colin Firth’s lead performance in the film have received critical acclaim following screenings at the Venice and Toronto film festivals. Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode and Ginnifer Goodwin also star in the film. The Weinstein Company release is due in theaters on December 11.

Ford, Firth and Moore are scheduled to attend.

“It is exciting to champion a talented artist like Tom Ford as he moves beyond the boundaries of one medium into another. In A SINGLE MAN, he delivers an elegant and beautiful personal story that will resonate with all audience members“ said AFI FEST Artistic Director Rose Kuo.

The Centerpiece Screening Gala presentation features the latest work by director Terry Gilliam. THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS follows the leader of a traveling theater troupe who, having made a deal with the devil, takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations. Gilliam and Plummer are scheduled to attend.

“The mind-altering, looking-glass world that Terry Gilliam creates in THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS,” notes Director of Programming Robert Koehler, “is like a model for his ideal cinema, in which anything can happen and all rules are broken. If audiences thought that THE DARK KNIGHT was their last glimpse of Heath Ledger, then what Ledger brings to Gilliam’s fantasy-adventure will surprise them.”

AFI FEST has selected actors Christopher Plummer and Viggo Mortensen to receive tributes at this year’s Festival. Sponsored by the Skirball Cultural Center, Plummer’s tribute event will precede the screening of his film THE LAST STATION on Tuesday, November 3. Viggo Mortensen

Viggo Mortensen

John Hillcoat THE ROAD is adapted from the acclaimed novel by Cormac McCarthy, THE ROAD stars Mortensen as a father making his way with his young son across the scorched landscape of a post-apocalyptic world. Directed by Hillcoat from a script by Joe Penhall, the film also stars Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce and Molly Parker. The Weinstein Company release is due in theaters November 25.

Mortensen, Hillcoat and Theron are scheduled to attend.

From his debut in Peter Weir’s WITNESS (1985) to his signature role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, Mortensen’s career has been highlighted by intensely stunning portrayals of men of strict and uncompromising character dealing with a shifting moral universe. Notable films include Sean Penn’s INDIAN RUNNER (1991), Gregory Widen’s THE PROPHECY (1995), Ridley Scott’s G.I. JANE, Tony Goldwyn’s A WALK ON THE MOON (1999), David Cronenberg’s A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (2005) and EASTERN PROMISES (2007)—for which he received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations—and Ed Harris’ APPALOOSA (2008).

“Viggo Mortensen and Christopher Plummer are two actors and film artists of the highest order,” said Kuo. “They share that rare trait of being looked up to by audiences and film fans around the world as well as being greatly respected by their peers.”

Other highlights among the complete film schedule announced today include Jonathan Demme’s music documentary NEIL YOUNG TRUNK SHOW (with Demme and Young confirmed to attend) and the screening of two films connected by legendary art director and longtime AFI Conservatory Distinguished Lecturer Robert Boyle, who turned 100 on October 10. Those films are AFI Conservatory Alumnus Daniel Raim’s (Production  Design ’99) documentary SOMETHING’S GONNA LIVE and Alfred Hitchcock’s classic NORTH BY NORTHWEST, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

A follow-up to Raim’s Oscar-nominated documentary, THE MAN ON LINCOLN’S NOSE, SOMETHING’S GONNA LIVE profiles Boyle (THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, THE BIRDS) and renowned art directors Henry Bumstead (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE STING), Harold Michelson (STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, CATCH-22) and Albert Nozaki (THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS), as well as master cinematographers Conrad Hall (IN COLD BLOOD, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID) and Haskell Wexler (WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT). From snapshots, sketches and vintage footage interwoven with interviews and new scenes of these octogenarian artists at work, we get a behind-the-scenes look at master moviemaking.

Boyle and Wexler will attend the World Premiere screening.

On Monday, November 2, AFI FEST, in conjunction with Warner Home Video will present a special screening of Hitchcock’s NORTH BY NORTHWEST. The first Hitchcock film to be released on Blu-ray, the film has been restored and remastered for its 50th anniversary. As part of the Gala event, director William Friedkin will attend to moderate a Q&A with Boyle and the film’s stars Eva Marie Saint and Martin Landau.

Koehler noted, “In our 23rd year, our programming seeks to shine a light on an international cinema landscape filled with brilliant young filmmakers forging fresh, unexpected pathways, documentarians on a quest for truth, and a fascinating survey of stop-motion animation (FANTASTIC MR. FOX, IN THE ATTIC, A TOWN CALLED PANIC), while delivering what AFI FEST has done from the beginning—offering audiences a view of the vastness of cinema across the world.”

AFI FEST continues its unique and successful association with the American Film Market with 23 of the features in official selection at AFI FEST represented by distributors at AFM, unfolding concurrently with AFI FEST from November 4–November 11. About the AFM
During AFM, the business of independent motion picture production and distribution—a truly collaborative process—reaches its peak every year, when more than 8,000 industry leaders converge in Santa Monica for eight days of deal-making, screenings, seminars, red carpet premieres, networking and parties.  Participants come from over 70 countries and include acquisition and development executives, agents, attorneys, directors, distributors, festival directors, financiers, film commissioners, producers, writers, the world’s press and all those who provide services to the motion picture industry.
Founded in 1981, the AFM has become the premier global marketplace where Hollywood’s decision makers and trendsetters all gather under one roof.  Unlike a film festival, the AFM is a marketplace where production and distribution deals are closed.  In just eight days, more than $800 million in deals will be sealed — on both completed films and those that haven’t started shooting yet — making AFM the must-attend industry event.

The AFM is produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), the trade association representing the world’s producers and distributors of independent motion pictures and television programs.  More information can be found at <>.

Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park – Voted Best Live Music Venue in Florida for 2009

Music In Media AwardCleveland-based singer-songwriter John Chaffee (, who has given voice to millions of his fellow frustrated Americans with “Play By The Rules”, recently received word he has received a Hollywood Music in Media Award nomination for the song. With biting wit and blunt truth, Chaffee points out in his song and video, everyone agrees: we’re all fed up with leaders and others in the public eye who keep failing us because—you guessed it—they don’t “Play By The Rules.”

Surprised by news of the honor, Chaffee said, “This is an unexpected recognition of a song I hope is resonating with the people. I’m very appreciative of the HMMA’s nomination. I’ll be at the show, perhaps with boots on!”

John Chaffee FriendsChaffee will find out if he wins the award when the Hollywood Music in Media Awards ( take place on Thursday, November 19 at The Highlands located in the world-famous Hollywood & Highlands / Kodak Theater complex in Hollywood, California.

The “Play By The Rules” song and video concept grew out of his growing anger over a daily dose of stories of corruption and scandal, not only in our nation’s capital but also in communities across the country.

The colorful and irresistible video features Chaffee, a dead ringer for “Uncle Sam,” in red, white and blue garb singing as he walks through colorful but decadent urban landscapes including junkyards that work perfectly as a metaphorical backdrop for his pointed plea of a chorus: “Cut me in, bail me out, failure’s not my fault/Responsibility, what’s that, just a word that’s all/I’m trying very hard, to chill and keep my cool/I’m trying hard to find someone, who’ll just play by the rules/Is there anybody out there, who’ll just play by the rules.”

“Early this year,” he says, “it seems we were told almost daily about another tax issue, or ethical issue, or moral issue, not just with the nominees for public office but also our representatives currently serving in government as well as others in positions of public trust. It’s an arrogance that leads to the belief that there are no consequences for your actions.

John Chaffee as Uncle Sam

“And I wondered,” Chaffee adds, “‘how do you know who to trust anymore? It seems nobody plays by the rules. The American people are coming to grips with the grim reality that trustworthiness is becoming a difficult thing to find. To me, ‘Play By The Rules’ is a song about the values taught to us as children that seem to be eroding in the lives and conduct of those people we are supposed to be able to look up to and respect. In many ways, America has become like a rudderless ship, careening across the water wishing she had a moral compass. There was once a Dignity Code, but it’s no longer in our rule book. Maybe it’s time to bring it back.”

Currently making a major splash in the indie Folk/Americana market with her self-titled debut on 37 Records, emerging singer-songwriter Cathy-Anne McClintock ( will perform at The Airliner for Tank Tuesdays in Los Angeles on October 13. The show begins at 9:30 p.m.

On October 14, she will join her husband Steven McClintock and John Batdorf at Winestyles in Pasadena, where she will be a special guest along with Larry Wayne Clark. On this night, it’s all about the wine and the songs from 7-9 p.m.

McClintock has been busy continuing on her incredible music journey performing around the U.S., Canada and Europe, since releasing her self-titled debut album earlier this year. Her latest single “Crazy ‘Bout You” has been climbing charts around the world, reaching the Top 40 on the Canada Music News chart and Top 20 on the Hot Country Europe chart. She is preparing to release “No Matter What”, her duet with Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea, to country radio in Europe.

Since moving to Southern California to focus on her solo career several years ago, she established herself as a formidable performer with gigs at hotspots like Genghis Cohen, The Mint, Kulaks, Hallenbecks and various special events, including Laguna Beach’s Pageant of the Masters, Sunset Serenade Series, Far West Folk Alliance, Canadian Music Week and the popular folk series The Living Tradition. At a particularly memorable gig at the House of Blues on Sunset, she opened for Canadian Celtic rockers Great Big Sea for an audience comprised of fellow Canadians; one of the highlights was Russell Crowe sitting in and singing a few Johnny Cash tunes with the band.

McClintock’s emergence as a solo artist is simply the latest triumph in a career that would make anyone want to “live like that.” Shortly after the Vancouver born and raised performer and her older sister Trisha Gagnon formed their bluegrass band Tumbleweed in the 90s, they played their first show on a slate in British Columbia with superstars Dolly Parton and Dwight Yoakam at Music 91, a government sponsored road show designed to boost tourism.

Tumbleweed enjoyed an incredible ten year run that included playing major folk and country festivals throughout Canada, performing in France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Switzerland, doing private shows for bigwigs like Rupert Murdoch and playing special engagements for thousands of schoolchildren. They were also winners of British Columbia’s Best Country Group, Best Country CD and nine time winners of B.C.’s Best Bluegrass Group.

He liked the song so much that he was determined to learn how to play. So, he went and bought a banjo. While practicing daily, he started coming up with some tunes and lyrics to the some of the early songs he recorded. The banjo went on the shelf for a while so he could continue writing. While recording his first CD, “The Factory Worker”, at WSDS Radio in Ypsilanti , Michigan , he met and became good friends with Bobby “Swampgrass” Anderson . Bobby was one of “The Westerners” (the band that started Mel Tillis in his career in Okinawa in the 1950’s). Bobby and Doc

Los Angeles, CA, October 6, 2009 — The British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles® (BAFTA/LA) will honor screen legend Kirk Douglas for his contribution to Worldwide Filmed Entertainment at the 2009 BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel.  Colin Firth will be receiving the BAFTA/LA Humanitarian Award Presented by Volvo and Academy Award and BAFTA award-winning director Danny Boyle will be presented with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Artistic Excellence in Directing.  BAFTA/LA previously announced Robert De Niro as the honoree for this year’s Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film as well as Emily Blunt for the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year.

Kirk Douglas is an acting institution whose iconic roles have made him an archetypal international movie star,” says BAFTA/LA Chairman Peter Morris. “His filmography is second to none and outside the world of film he has continued to inspire audiences worldwide through his books and his charitable endeavors.   It could not be more fitting that BAFTA/LA is honoring Mr. Douglas for his lasting legacy to worldwide entertainment.”

Morris continues, “This year’s honorees have consistently inspired us and audiences worldwide with their incredible talent and presence on and off screen, and we are proud to honor their remarkable accomplishments and welcome them to the distinguished pantheon of BAFTA/LA honorees.”

Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated actor and writer Stephen Fry will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Fry has previously hosted the British Academy Film Awards for three consecutive years. His film and TV credits include “Wilde,” “Peter’s Friends,” “Gosford Park,” “A Bit of Fry and Laurie,” and most recently “Bones” and “Kingdom.”

A lifetime of achievement – which includes 87 films, 10 plays, 9 books, and a host of other contributions to his art, his country, and his fellowmen – speaks for itself.  Born December 9, 1916 in Amsterdam, New York, Kirk Douglas made his Broadway debut as a singing Western Union boy in Spring Again, but interrupted his budding stage career in 1942 to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a communications officer in anti-submarine warfare.

After the war he returned to Broadway as the ghost soldier in The Wind is Ninety.  His widely praised performance caught the attention of Hollywood, and he was cast opposite Barbara Stanwyck in “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers.”  Three years later, after an unsuccessful return to Broadway, his agents arranged for him to co-star with Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck in “The Great Sinner.”  His agents were aghast when he declined to play that part.  Instead, he chose the role of the anti-hero, Mr. Kelly, in “Champion,” at a much lower salary.  The cynical boxer in Stanley Kramer’s “Champion,” won him both stardom and an Academy Award nomination.  He received his second nomination in 1952 for playing an opportunistic movie mogul in “The Bad and the Beautiful,” and his third in 1956 for his portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in “Lust for Life,” for which he won the New York Film Critics’ Best Actor Award.

In 1955, Mr. Douglas formed one of Hollywood’s first independent film companies, Bryna, named for his mother, and managed by his wife, Anne.  The Bryna Company produced many memorable films, including “Paths of Glory,”The Vikings,” “Spartacus,” “Lonely are the Brave,” and “Seven Days in May.”  In 1958, Mr. Douglas broke the notorious Hollywood blacklist when he gave screen credit to blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo for the “Spartacus” screenplay.  Mr. Douglas was widely condemned for his decision at the time.  It was not until 30 years later that the American Civil Liberties Union and the Writers Guild of America recognized his act as courageous.

Among the top awards Douglas received was the Medal of Freedom, the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award, the Academy Award for “50 years as a creative and moral force in the motion picture community,” the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s inaugural Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film, the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and the Presidential Medal of the Arts. He had a high school named for him in West Granada Hills and a street named after him in Palm Springs.

When not acting, Mr. Douglas occupies his time writing. His credits include The Ragman’s Son, Dance with the Devil, The Gift, Climbing the Mountain: My Search for Meaning, My Stroke of Luck, Last Tango in Brooklyn and Let’s Face It: 90 Years of Living, Loving and Learning, as well as the children’s books, The Broken Mirror and Young Heroes of the Bible .

In 1996, he had a stroke which affected his speech.  For a time, he believed this would end his career as an actor, but with the encouragement of his friends and family, he kept working with a speech therapist and at the end of 1998, he played the role of a feisty ex-boxer recovering from a stroke.  “Diamonds” was released in December of 1999.

In 2003 he filmed “It Runs in the Family” with his son Michael and grandson Cameron.  He followed that with a movie, “Illusion.”  He said that will be his last movie, but don’t count on it.  In the meantime, he made a documentary with his son Michael dramatizing the relationship between them, it is called “A Father A Son: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

Mr. Douglas recently wrote and performed a one man show called Before I Forget that opened to rave reviews and sold out performances in Los Angeles.  It is currently being adapted for a future theatrical release of which all proceeds will go to the Motion Picture & Television Fund.

In addition to being an internationally recognized actor, Colin Firth is an Ambassador for Oxfam International, an organization dedicated to fighting poverty and related injustice around the world.  He is also a supporter of Survival International and the co founder of Café Progreso, a fair trade coffee chain. Firth is also involved with Eco Age, a retail store and environmental consultancy promoting green living.   In 2008 he was named “Philanthropist of the Year” by The Hollywood Reporter and in 2006 he was voted “European Campaigner of the Year” by the EU.

Firth’s versatility has been recognized in both dramas and comedies, garnering critical acclaim and awards including nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, an Emmy nomination, and multiple BAFTA nominations.  Firth will next be seen starring in “A Single Man,” based on the acclaimed Christopher Isherwood novel.  Tom Ford makes his directorial debut with the film which stars Firth as a man contemplating what may be the last day of his life. Firth was recently awarded Best Actor at the 2009 Venice Film Festival for his performance.  He will also appear in Robert Zemeckis’ “A Christmas Carol,” a 3D motion-capture-animated version of the classic Dickens tale which stars Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman.

His film credits include “Genova” directed by Michael Winterbottom, “Mamma Mia,” “Then She Found Me,” “And When Did You Last See Your Father,” “Easy Virtue,” “Girl With A Pearl Earring,” “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” “Love Actually,” “The Importance of Being Earnest,” ”Shakespeare In Love,” “The English Patient,” “Where the Truth Lies,” “Trauma,” “Apartment Zero,” “My Life So Far,” Nick Hornby’s “Fever Pitch,” “Circle of Friends” and the title role in Milos Forman’s “Valmont.”

On the small screen, Firth is infamous for his breakout role in 1995, when he played “Mr. Darcy” in the BBC adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor and was honored with the National Television Award for “Most Popular Actor.”  In 2006 Firth appeared in the critically-acclaimed BBC television movie “Born Equal.” In March 2004, Firth hosted NBC’s legendary series “Saturday Night Live.”  He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2001 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in the critically acclaimed HBO film “Conspiracy” and has also received the Royal Television Society Best Actor Award and a BAFTA nomination for his performance in “Tumbledown.”  His other television credits include “Windmills on the Clyde: Making Donovan Quick,”  “Donovan Quick,” “The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd,” “Deep Blue Sea,” “Hostages,” and the mini-series “Nostromo.”

Danny Boyle is an award winning director whose most recent project; “Slumdog Millionaire” received eight Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture at the 2009 Oscars.  Boyle has been receiving honors from his debut film, “Shallow Grave,” which won the Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs, as well as Best Director at the San Sebastian Film Festival, The Empire Award for Best Director and Best British Film and the London Critics’ Circle Film Award for Best British Newcomer.

Boyle’s second feature, “Trainspotting,” is one of the highest grossing British films of all time. and won four Empire Awards including Best Director and Best Film and was nominated for a BAFTA Alexander Korda Award.   In 2002 Boyle made the smash hit horror film “28 Days Later” earning him a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. Boyle’s other feature films include “Millions” starring James Nesbit, Alex Etel and Lewis McGibbon, ”The Beach,” starring Leonardo Di Caprio, “A Life Less Ordinary,” starring Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz, “Alien Love Triangle” and “Sunshine” starring Cillian Murphy.

Boyle’s work in television includes producing Alan Clark’s controversial ”Elephant,” and directing Strumpet, Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise and the series “Mr. Wroe’s Virgins” for which he received a BAFTA nomination. Boyle’s career started in the theatre with Howard Barker’s Victory, Howard Brenton’s The Genius and Edward Bond’s Saved, which won the Time Out Award. Boyle has also directed five productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
