JAKARTA, Indonesia – Four of the world’s most rare rhinoceroses were captured by camera traps installed in an Indonesian national park, an environmental group said Monday.

The footage from movement-triggered hidden cameras showed two mother Javan rhinos and two calves in Ujung Kulon National Park in November and December last year, said a release from the WWF-Indonesia.

Javan rhinos are one of the world’s most endangered species with an estimated population of no more than 50 in Ujung Kulon. A few others live in Vietnam’s Cat Tien National Park.  Read more here.

What’s it like to be struck by lightning, to survive a shark attack, to fly with the Air Force Thunderbirds, and to experience other incredible events? Jeff Belanger’s new children’s book explores those topics and more.

What It’s Like to Climb Mount Everest, Blast Off into Space, Survive a Tornado, and Other Extraordinary Stories (Sterling Publishing, February 2011; $9.95, Ages 9 and up) is a collection of thrilling, as-told-to interviews with the people whose experiences often made front-page news, changed their lives, and inspired the rest of us ever since.

“I wanted to share what it feels, looks, smells, and sounds like to do the kinds of things most of us will never experience for ourselves,” Jeff Belanger said. “I had the chance to get to know twelve ordinary people who either made the choice to survive against all odds, or who set their focus on a goal so lofty that many of us assume it would be impossible.”

What It’s Like… features the stories of people like: Bethany Hamilton—the pro surfer whose arm was ripped off by a shark; Mark Inglis—the first and only man (so far) to climb Mount Everest with artificial legs; Dean Karnazes—who ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days; Tami Oldham Ashcraft—who sailed a boat through a hurricane and survived two months at sea alone; Angus Cockney—who walked 600 miles from Canada to the North Pole; Joe Hurley—who walked from Provincetown, Massachusetts to Long Beach, California; and several other no-less-extraordinary people.

“My life was changed just talking to these folks,” Belanger said. “I don’t think any of them set out to inspire us when they survived or accomplished their feats; but they did so nonetheless. People can do anything. I’m convinced.”

About the Author Jeff Belanger ( is an author, a lecturer, and a collector of quirky tales from around the world. He’s worked as a journalist, and a television host, and has written over a dozen books, including Weird Massachusetts and The World’s Most Haunted Places, that feature interviews with people on a wide range of topics. Black Death – Movie Review

Directed by Christopher Smith

Black Death movie review

While historically accurate as possible Black Death falls short in character development. The film does not allow the audience to care about the characters on screen

Directed by Christopher Smith

Black Death takes place during the chaos of the plague outbreak in Europe during 1348.  This film depicts the horror of not only the spreading of the disease, which claimed lives without remorse but also shows, the involvement of religion in claiming lives.  The story revolves around a novice monk named Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) who is rather conflicted with his devotion to God and his love for Averill (Kimberly Nixon).  His religious conflict is set aside when threat of the plague arrives in the village Osmund and Averill inhabit.  To save her, Osmund sends Averill to a rumored plagueless village hidden in the forest.  He decides to remain in the monastery to continue to deal with his religious dilemma and asks God for a sign on which choice he should make.

Osmund does not wait long for his sign.  A group of knights arrive in the village who have been charged by the church to investigate the rumors surrounding the plagueless village and its leader.  The head knight, Ulric (Sean Bean) enlists the aid of Osmund to find the village.  Osmund joins willingly, taking this as his sign to follow Averill.

As they journey toward the village, Osmund discovers that Ulric was charged to destroy the necromancer that leads the forest-hidden village and fears that some harm may have already come to Averill. Osmund’s journey quickly becomes a rescue mission and his questions about religion disappear as he becomes more like Ulric taking lives in the name of God.  In the end Osmund’s life becomes more of a myth since no more was known of him after completing his journey.

The look of the film generally was smokey and grungy, depicting the filth and despair found in Europe during the plague.  The costumes and weaponry were accurate to the period, to the point where actual timber sets were built to give authenticity to the year.  The beauty of the surrounding structures was lost amongst all of the marshland shots however; more of the general surroundings would have given the film a more complete feel.

Although much care was taken into making the film as historically accurate as possible, it seems that not enough care was taken into the character development.  The film does not allow the audience to care about the characters on screen.  The actors go through their lines and act them perfectly but reasons to care about the characters are few.  Background on Ulric, for example, would have been helpful to see why he was so extreme in his choices when it came to religion.  The potential of a heartbreaking back-story exists but is only hinted at and never explored.  The main story seemed to drag on and the time could have been filled with more about each of the characters.

Nicholas Courtney,Brigadier,Doctor Who,Doctor who cast member dies

Nicholas Courtney, age 81 whose role as the Brigadier served as the trusty companion to many generations of Doctor Who passed away after a struggle with cancer.

Nicholas Courtney, whose role as the Brigadier served as the trusty companion to—and connective tissue between—many generations of Doctor Who, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 81.
Courtney first appeared on Doctor Who in 1965 as Space Agent Bret Vyon, but stepped into what would become his most consistent role as Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in 1968. It was arguably the show’s most consistent role as well: Although Doctor Who has seen many different Time Lords throughout the years, there was only one Brigadier, and Courtney appeared alongside five of them in a history with the show that spanned more than 100 episodes and two decades. Courtney’s most significant run came during the Jon Pertwee era, when the Brigadier was introduced as the commander of U.N.I.T., the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, charged with protecting the Earth from otherworldly threats. The Doctor tells the brigadier exactly what he thinks of him before storming off…and landing in a rubbish tip! This is one time it might have been better for The Doctor to hold his tongue! Clip taken from BBC Classic Doctor Who episode, ‘Inferno’.

Ronnie Dunn photo,Ronnie Dunn performance

Ronnie Dunn's first solo release “Bleed Red” jumps to #24 on Billboard charts this week!

Superstar will be among more than 20 artists performing at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Fla!

SPIRIT OF THE SUWANNEE MUSIC PARK, LIVE OAK – The Suwannee River Jam, the largest country music jam in the South, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2011 with a host of country artists including new solo act Ronnie Dunn, formerly of Brooks and Dunn.

The Jam is held every April at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (SOSMP) in Live Oak, Fla on the banks of the famous Suwannee River where almost every major country music artist today has performed over the past 20 years.

Ronnie Dunn will make his first festival appearance as a solo artist since retiring from Brooks and Dunn when he performs at the Suwannee River Jam April 30.

Ronnie broke career records within just one day of releasing his first single as a new solo artist, “Bleed Red.” The song quickly took the position of Top Debut and Most Added spots, charted at #30 and moved to #24 this week. Ronnie’s first release as a new solo performer received an overwhelming response from radio and became the best debut on the charts since Keith Urban’s “Put You In A Song” in 2010. “Bleed Red” is paralleling “My Maria,” which Ronnie released in 1996 with Kix Brooks as both songs debuted at #30 and both have become Ronnie’s best debut to date.

Ronnie produced “Bleed Red” while Andrew Dorff and Tommy Lee James wrote the song that was recorded with Arista Nashville.

“Bleed Red” is expected to move rapidly up the charts in the coming weeks. Will it be at #1 by Jam time? Let’s watch and see! You know Ronnie is going to sing that song for you at the Jam’s big birthday party in a few short weeks!

Ronnie’s first album as a new solo act will be released this summer.

Meanwhile, Ronnie will sing “Bleed Red” for the first time publicly at the 46th Annual ACM Awards April 3 in Las Vegas. Ronnie said “Bleed Red” was a last-minute addition to his upcoming album. “I think this song picked me. I had the record, it was finished, I was good to go,” said Ronnie. “I thought I was headed to the honky-tonks and beer joints to kick out a few lights, and it drops out of the sky at the last moment. It’s the single they picked to come out with first,” Ronnie added.

Ronnie and Sara Evans will headline the ACM Concerts at Fremont Street Experience April 1-2 in Las Vegas before the ACM Awards. It’s all part of the week-long Vegas Goes Country party in Las Vegas prior to the ACM Awards.

Some of Ronnie’s hits with Brooks and Dunn include “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” and many, many more.

This year’s 20th anniversary Suwannee River Jam will be the best yet to hear and see some of the best country music artists in the business! Don’t you dare miss it!

The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is located at 3076 95th Drive 4.5 miles north of Live Oak, Fl off US 129 at the famous Suwannee River. The park is 4.5 miles south of Interstate 75 and 4.5 miles north of Interstate 10 off US 129. Keep an eye out for our sign and our white painted board fence!

SAN DIEGO, CA, February 14, 2011… Surf dog Ricochet, the SURFice dog who raised over $70,000 for charity in the last 15 months, has been challenged to raise more money than TV reality stars in a breast cancer fundraiser called “Reality Rally”

“Reality Rally” is the brainchild of Gillian Larsen, a contestant on the popular reality show, “Survivor Gabon”.  Gillian was voted off durin

g the 2nd show, giving her five weeks in the jungle to create what has become known as the premier Reality Star fundraiser.

Reality Rally is a three-day weekend event in Temecula, California, April 15-17 intended to raise funds for Michelle’s Place, a non profit 501(c)3 resource center in Murrieta where women can go for help in coping with the challenges of breast cancer. Michelle’s Place was started 10 years ago to fulfill a 26 year old daughters dying wish… to provide a haven and support center for those battling breast cancer.

When Ricochet heard there was fund raising involved, she contacted Gillian, and asked if she could help.  An immediate “alliance” was formed.  As Gillian learned of Ricochet’s philanthropic successes, she challenged the 110 participating reality TV stars from 36 different Reality Shows including Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Big Brother to raise more money than a dog!!  A challenge Ricochet was very excited to take on while helping women with breast cancer.

Ricochet has raised $3323 in the last several weeks, leaving the reality stars in her wake!  The next highest fundraiser is Gillian herself at $1035.  But, the competitive nature of the other reality stars kicked in, and social media is burning up with the challenge, and threads are asking for support from their family, friends and fans all over the world.  It’s turned into Reality versus FUReality!!

There is a “reward” for this challenge too. Anyone raising over $1000 wins a Hot Air balloon adventure with Grape Escape Hot Air Tours. Ricochet and Gillian are donating their “reward” to “help someone’s spirits soar” as they go through the arduous treatment for breast cancer. Women can contact Michelle’s Place to enter a drawing for the hot air balloon ride.  But, the real winners of this challenge will be all the women with breast cancer that benefit from Michelle’s Place… very possibly saving their lives.

Please “get on board”, and help keep Ricochet in the lead while blowing the rest of the reality stars out of the water, and supporting FUReality & breast cancer!  Just click this link to make a donation. .

Karen Gillan is Scotland’s newest celebrity cutie. Even with her extensive background in dramatic acting, she experienced an early breakthrough on the catwalk as one of Allegra Hicks’ models at London Fashion Week in 2007.

Since then, she jumped into the acting circuit and landed on solid footing by mocking celebs like Angelina Jolie and Katy Perry as a regular on comedy show The Kevin Bishop Show.

If international audiences didn’t know her then, they certainly do now, as she is currently playing Amy Pond, the newest companion of the titular doctor on the long-running British TV series Doctor Who.

And who doesn’t love any actress who can hold her own on the science fiction show loved by so many fans in the UK and the United States?

Dallas, TX, February 10, 2011—The DALLAS International Film Festival announced today the first twelve films that will screen at this year’s fifth festival (March 31 – April 10) including four world premieres and one U.S. premiere.  The festival announced three films set for its Texas Competition, two films in its Family Friendly section and the first film selected for a brand new India Spotlight series. Films entered into the narrative feature and narrative documentary competition will once again have the chance to win an unrestricted cash prize of $25,000 per category courtesy of Target.

DALLAS IFF also announced that CADILLAC will be the film festival’s presenting sponsor for the 2011 edition.

Gil Cates Jr.’s comedy LUCKY stars Colin Hanks as a wannabe serial killer who wins the lottery and decides to pursue his lifelong crush. Hanks will return to Dallas where he filmed the FOX television series “The Good Guys” last year. The film also stars Jeffrey Tambor, Mimi Rogers and Ann-Margret.

Three selections for DALLAS IFF’s coveted Texas Competition category were announced. Sponsored by MPS Studios, the first films lined up for the Texas Competition are: Patrick Tourville’s documentary OK BUCKAROOS, which profiles Country Western music troubadour and legend, Jerry Jeff Walker; Eric Hueber’s RAINBOWS END, a comedy that follows a band of native East Texas misfits West as they make a run at California gold; and Rachel Shepard’s TRAVELING, which connects three “lost” strangers on a road trip to Austin.

A festival highlight, Family Day, will be returning on Saturday, April 2, with the world premiere of Sam Ditore’s COOPER & THE CASTLE HILLS GANG, a children’s action adventure filmed on location in the north Dallas community featuring the title character’s attempts to help his neighborhood’s beloved grandpa find something he lost.  Sponsored by Bright Realty and supported by the Junior League of Dallas, adults and children of all ages will be invited to walk the Family Day red carpet, participate in arts and crafts, watch live performances, and experience the fun buzz of families and film. Also announced for the Family Friendly Section is William Dear’s THE PERFECT GAME, which is based on the true story about the first non-U.S. team to win the Little League World Series.

The initial international entries on the DALLAS IFF slate include the first official selection for the debut of a new India Spotlight section. Kiran Rao’s MUMBAI DIARIES (Dhobi Ghat) is a drama involving the lives of four different people living in Mumbai. The movie brings into focus, among other things, the problems and situations of non-resident Indians, in particular those raised in the U.S. The second international selection revealed today also has strong Dallas ties. Dallas residents, Rob and Conor Allyn, produced (Rob Allyn) and co-directed (Conor Allyn, with Yadi Sugandi) BLOOD OF EAGLES (Darah garuda – Merah putih II), an Indonesian take on a classic Hollywood premise: an elite army unit is put together to halt work on the enemy’s strategically situated airfield. BLOOD OF EAGLES was the highest grossing film in Indonesia last year.

Two selections vying for the $25,000 Target cash prize in the Documentary Feature competition were announced.  Alex Dawson and Greg Gricus’s poignant WILD HORSE, WILD RIDE and Anne Buford’s ELEVATE, a story documenting the journey of four teenagers from Senegal as they embark on life in American Prep schools in the hope of reaching the NBA.

Having just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Calvin Lee Reeder brings his signature surreal and horrific filmmaking style back to Dallas with a screening of his debut feature THE OREGONIAN. The film follows an Oregon woman’s experiences after she survives a brutal car accident. Reeder’s work is familiar to DALLAS IFF audiences following screenings of his short films LITTLE FARM, which was the 2007 Festival’s Short Grand Jury Prize winner, THE RAMBLER and SNAKE MOUNTAIN COLADA. Another indie filmmaker returning to DALLAS IFF will be Dave Boyle. Boyle’s SURROGATE VALENTINE about a San Francisco indie musician on the road will mark his second appearance at the festival following BIG DREAMS LITTLE TOKYO in 2007.

“These first dozen selections really highlight how international cinema and our own Dallas and Texas filmmakers intersect at DALLAS IFF. We are proud to present the inspired work of our local filmmakers and returning DALLAS IFF alumni side-by-side with other auteurs from around the world. Just as much as the city of Dallas is truly an international center connecting the world with our local businesses and culture, DALLAS IFF has become a southwestern hub for international and local filmmaking,” said James Faust, DALLAS International Film Festival Artistic Director.

For the first time since the inception of the DALLAS International Film Festival, automotive giant CADILLAC has signed on as presenting sponsor.  Metroplex Cadillac Dealers will be providing the festival with a Cadillac fleet to transport filmmakers and festival guests around Dallas for the entire 11-day duration.  “We are proud to be able to support the DALLAS International Film Festival in this capacity,” said Tom D’Angelo, Regional Marketing Manager for Cadillac, South Central Region.  “Metroplex Cadillac Dealers are dedicated to celebrating the arts within the community and what a better way to do this than supporting an internationally respected festival of this caliber.”  To entice festival audiences even further, the DALLAS Film Society will be launching a raffle for one lucky winner to walk away with a 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe.  On February 10, a CTS Coupe will be unveiled at an ultra chic festival kick-off party at Stanley Korshak in Dallas – only 1,000 raffle tickets will go on sale for $100 each or 6 for $500 (for information on how to buy a ticket visit  The winner will be notified following the DALLAS Film Society Honors on April 8, 2011.

The 2011 DALLAS International Film Festival presented by Cadillac will be dedicated to founder and Chairman Emeritus, Liener Temerlin.  “The creative influence of Liener Temerlin has left a mark on the city of Dallas,” said Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. “As Mayor, I have always been proud to be a part of the DALLAS International Film Festival, even more so in 2011 when the festival is being dedicated to Liener, a true trailblazer.”

Downtown Dallas will become a vibrant epicenter of the festival as the stylish Joule Hotel will host out-of-town filmmakers and visiting celebrities. With the Festival Lounge only steps away from the Joule, filmmakers and film fans can mingle and experience the energy of downtown, whilst within striking distance of the Dallas Arts District, which will offer thought-provoking panels, museum-oriented events and red carpet Galas. With theaters in the fashionable West Village, hip Mockingbird Station and family friendly Plano, filmmakers and attendees will receive a 360 degree cultural Dallas experience.

The DALLAS International Film Festival will run March 31 – April 10, 2011. Passes are currently on sale, tickets go on sale March 14. Passes and tickets will be made available via online (, and phone (214.720.0555).

Details as to why The Doctor will have facial hair are yet to be unveiled, but Smith admitted to that he would not have been able to grow his own beard for the episode.

“It was a glued-on beard,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to grow a full-on beard like that in time.”

Smith added that it was particularly difficult to peel away the faux hair at the end of each day’s shooting schedule.

“They had to remove it with a substance smelling like white turps,” he said.

Glee is getting lovey-dovey this week with the song selections from their Valentines’ Day-themed episode, “Silly Love Songs.”
For the second episode in a row Kevin McHale (Artie) takes a Michael Jackson hit. In his episode, he’s singing “P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing).” Out of all the males, I think McHale was definitely the right choice to sing this song. His voice has the right tone and flavor to pull this song off. I think it was important for him and the show to not have a carbon-copy vocal, but still manage to keep the essence of the song intact, and I think they succeeded on both levels.

Adorable video. Father strumming an acoustic guitar, his daughter sitting beside him, taking her turns on every other verse.

A young, handsome man strumming an acoustic guitar, his daughter sitting beside him, taking her turns on every other verse. The song is by a band you probably have never heard of, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It’s got a catchy little hook, a great whistle intro and a chorus – “home is wherever I’m with you” – that wouldn’t make you stop and think, unless you knew Jorge and Alexa. Unless you knew that he’s a full-time student, 24, and recently split with Alexa and her sister’s mom. You wouldn’t pay attention unless you knew that he sings the song to his daughter every night as a way of helping her deal with the pain of her mom and dad splitting up, to help her deal with having two homes. You wouldn’t think much of it unless you talked to Jorge. Read the full critique go here.

Original video. Cool song

Mekhi Phifer is an amazing actor, who took time out of filming the show “Torchwood” to speak with GlobalGrind about his new web site,, which is a platform for independent filmmakers to showcase their work. Mekhi also dishes about working with Spike Lee, rappers Eminem and Cam’ron, and making it in Hollywood.
You’re working on a new show called Torchwood, how is that coming along?

I’m on a new show called Torchwood and it’s going to be on Starz/BBC, they partnered up. Since the show is such a huge hit here in the UK, we had to come out here because I had to play a CIA agent and I had to come get them, so we had to be out here for a couple of weeks. We had to change hotels so we’ve got a smaller boutique hotel because we had to change locations. They are just a little slow with it. Read the rest of the interview here.

Martin Freeman "Bilbo Baggins". For the latest news join our mailing list.

Today 3Foot7 Ltd. announced that New Line and Peter Jackson will begin shooting The Hobbit films on March 21.

Production was originally scheduled to get away on The Lord of the Rings prequel films on February 14. Jackson was forced to be admitted to the hospital for stomach pains prior to shooting and had to undergo surgery for a perforated ulcer. This setback followed a labor dispute and prior to that, MGM’s bankruptcy proceedings.

Last week Jackson was released from the hospital and is anxious to get the long-delayed film underway. In his words, “Despite some delays we are fully back on track and very excited to get started.”

The Hobbit films will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and see several cast members from The Lord of the Rings trilogy appear including Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Andy Serkis as Gollum, and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Shooting will take place on location in New Zealand and at Stone Street Studios in Miramar.
