Grammy and CMA winner Joe Diffie to be part of the 20th Anniversary Suwannee River Jam.

Grammy and CMA winner Joe Diffie to be part of the 20th Anniversary Suwannee River Jam.

The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Fla is thrilled to announce the signing of Grammy and CMA winner Joe Diffie to be part of the huge group of country artists playing at the 20th Anniversary Suwannee River Jam this year in Live Oak, Fla!

Diffie was just signed and joins artists Ronnie Dunn (formerly of Brooks and Dunn), Gary Allan, Luke Bryan, Kellie Pickler, Phil Vassar, Jerrod Niemann, Darryl Worley, Lee Brice, LoCash Cowboys and Blackberry Smoke who will perform during this historic 20th birthday of the largest country music jam in the South, the Suwannee River Jam!

A member since 1993 of the Grand Ole Opry which he considers his greatest achievement, some of Joe Diffie’s hit songs include “John Deere Green,” “Bigger Than The Beetles,” “Prop Me Up,” “Pickup Man,” “Third Rock From The Sun,” “Leroy The Redneck Reindeer” and many, many more. His most recent album is Homecoming.

Diffie has produced 12 singles that reached the top of the charts, was awarded a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 1998. In 1993 Diffie received the CMA Vocal Event of the Year award. His first number one hit was “Home” in 1990. He has toured extensively over the years and currently is touring the United States and Canada.

In case you’re new to the country music scene, you should know that Joe Diffie is both a performer and songwriter, according to journalist Greg Victor. “He is responsible for twelve #1 hits of his own, as well as hits for Tim McGraw, Tracy Lawrence and Joe Dee Messina. But Homecoming is a return to Diffie’s bluegrass roots. He delivers a collection that sounds as free as the wind whistling through the Great Smoky Mountains. But that doesn’t mean that Diffie is new to recording bluegrass; the first time was 25 years ago when he appeared on an album by The Special Edition.”

Homecoming was co-produced by Diffie and Luke Wooten and features a who’s who of bluegrass, including fiddler/mandolin player Aubrey Haynie. Aubrey Haynie is one of Live Oak, Fla’s own favorite sons and has played at the SOSMP on several occasions.

The jam will also include a second stage where up and coming artists will perform, including the winners of the SRJ talent contest. Additionally, the new Ms. Suwannee River Jam Daisy Dukes Style will be crowned to reign for the next year and receive more than $3,000 in prizes.

I had the pleasure of being entertained by one of the most audience friendly band in the South Texas Region at the Heart of Texas Rockfest as part of the 2011 SXSW week in Austin Texas. One-Eyed Doll put on an electrifying performance which woke up the sleepy crowd that was there when I first arrived. Then again you shouldn’t expect anything less from the duo of Kimberly and Jason. It was a short set but it was still packed full of energy and interaction with the crowd. The only disappointment was when the sound guy denied the crowd the encore they so desperately were begging for. But that didn’t stop Kimberly from leading the crowd away graciously for some meet and greet time with their fans.

Wilfred Starring Elijah Wood

The video clips below were released by FX. The pilot for the new comedy series Wilfred starring Elijah Wood, Jason Gann and Chris Klein will air in June.

This is absurdest and wildly funny stuff. Ryan (Wood) is a suicidally depressed man whose comely neighbor, played by Fiona Gublemann, asks him to watch her dog during the afternoons.
To her the dog is a proper canine; a waggy tail, non verbal, the normal sort of pup. To Ryan, this dog is a guy in a dog suit who talks to him. No one else sees this but Ryan. Think “Harvey.” More here.

If you missed the Late Show w/ David Letterman last night you missed “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs” a new song from Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers. The lyrics are true and  the vocals blew me away. It is one of the most beautifully done “gospel” song ever recorded. Rounder Record announced the release of   the 1st CD recorded together by Steve Martin & Steep Canyon Rangers: ”RARE BIRD ALERT”.

The Steep Canyon Rangers are: Mike Guggino (mandolin), Charles Humphrey III (bass), Woody Platt (guitar), Nicky Sanders (fiddle), and Graham Sharp (banjo).  For more about The Steep Canyon Rangers visit their website.

Rare Bird Alert features “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs

Video and Lyrics

“Atheists Don’t Have No Songs” Lyrics

Christians have their hymns and pages,
Hava Nagila’s
for the Jews,
Baptists have the rock of ages,
Atheists just sing the blues.

Romantics play Claire de Lune,
Born agains sing He is risen,
But no one ever wrote a tune,
For godless existentialism.

For Atheists,
There’s no good news,
They’ll never sing a song of faith.

For atheists,
They have a rule,
The “he” is always lowercase.
The “he” is always lowercase.

Some folks sing a Bach cantata,
Lutherans get Christmas trees,
Atheist songs add up to nada,
But they do have Sundays free.

Pentecostalists sing they sing to heaven,
Coptics have the books of scrolls,
Numerologists can count to seven,
Atheists have rock and roll.

For Atheists,
There’s no good news,
They’ll never sing a song of Faith.

In their songs,
They have a rule,
The “he” is always lowercase.
The “he” is always lowercase.

Catholics dress up for Mass,
And listen to, Gregorian chants.

Atheists just take a pass,
Watch football in their underpants.
Watch football in their underpants.

Atheists, Atheists, Atheists,
Don’t have no songs!

Eve Myles Torchwood's Gwen Cooper interview
Eve Myles Torchwood’s Gwen Cooper interview. Myles  talks about “Torchwood: Miracle Day”

By: Will Harris (
Interview Date: 01/07/2011
Run Date: 03/11/2011
When we walked into the panel for the new season of “Torchwood” during the 2011 Winter TCA Press Tour, we literally only knew two things about the series’ return: it will now be broadcast on Starz, and Mekhi Phifer and Bill Pullman are going to be part of the cast. We thought we knew a third thing – that the subtitle of the series would be “The New World” – but when series mastermind Russell T. Davies took the stage a few moments later to make his brief introductory remarks, we found out that we had been wrong.

“The first announcement is we have no footage to show you,” said Davies. “We have a title. This has been working under the working title of ‘The New World,’ but that was a secret title to hide the real title, which is now beknown as ‘Torchwood: Miracle Day.’ That’s what this show is about, and the premise is a miracle that happens to the world. It’s as simple as this: one day on Earth, no one dies. Not a single person on Earth dies. The next day, no one dies. The next day, no one dies, and on and on and on. Now, the sixth day, the old stay old and keep getting older, the dying keep dying, but…no one quite dies. The possibility of death ceases to exist. Great news for some people, but globally — and that’s what the whole show is about, actually — it’s an instant overnight population boom where, suddenly, the Earth relies on people dying. That’s how the whole system works: the food, the room, the temperature. So, suddenly, you’ve got a crisis affecting everyone on the planet…and that’s where the Torchwood team and our brand-new characters come in.” Read the full interview here.

Today’s Music Reviews

Thelonious Monk cd review

Thelonious Monk starts this list of music reviews that includes The Allman Brothers, Jed Davis,Electric Wizard,VocalEssence, Andre Thomas.

Music Review: Thelonious Monk – Monk’s Music

By GREG BARBRICK Even though Thelonious Monk had been recording for over a decade already, 1957 was the year he was finally accepted by the mainstream jazz audience. Peers, hipsters, and writers “in the know” had been into Monk from the beginning. But the pianist’s dissonant, sometimes broken rhythms had been a tough sell to the general public. Monk’s Music changed all of that for good. Read the rest of this article here.

Music Review: The Allman Brothers – Eat A Peach

By David Bowling Life was good for The Allman Brothers. At Fillmore East had been a commercial breakthrough for the group. It was then recognized as one of the best live bands in the world and Duane Allman had ascended to the top rung of guitarists. Rolling Stone Magazine would place him at number 2 on its list of The Best Guitarists Of All Time. Read the rest of this article here.

Music Review: Jed Davis – The Cutting Room Floor

By BILL SHERMAN Back in the eighties, when this writer was living in the Illinois heartland, I was part of a group of new music lovers who used to regularly drive a van up north to Chicago or Schaumburg to see then up-and-comers like the B-52’s or Devo. It was a two-hour plus drive, and when our blurry-eyed selves were released from the clubs, we typically had to stop on the way home in the Bolingbrook Denny’s for some caffeine and sustenance. Listening to Jed Davis’ The Cutting Room Floor (Eschatone Records), I found myself recollecting those late night early repasts: not just because one of the tracks on this disc specifically recalls the joys of “Denny’s 3:00 A.M.,” but because the whole disc captures so much of the sounds of that era. Read the rest of this article here.

Music Review: Electric Wizard – Black Masses

By GUTTERCANDY In contrast to the fairly sedate musical year of 2010, 2011 has already seen some its finest musical releases thus far fall in the hard rock category.Leading the pack is the awesome Electric Wizard and their latest, Black Masses. The Wizard are like the grungiest, darkest aspects of classic Black Sabbath distilled to their graveyard essence. Read the rest of this article here.

Music Review: Linda Eder – Now

By JORDAN RICHARDSON I was first introduced to the big Broadway voice of Linda Eder by my wife. I found myself instantly smitten by Eder’s gargantuan, dramatic tones. Her eloquent phrasing was intoxicating and her ability to draw listeners in to the heart of a song, into that theatrical spirit, was second to none.  Read the rest of this article here.

Music review: VocalEssence, Andre Thomas let the spirit flow

By Rob Hubbard Andre Thomas is an inspiring man. He’s devoted his career to teaching young Americans not only how to sing traditional African-American spirituals, but about the history and evolution of the songs, as well, which involves confronting a lot of troubling truths. Drowning Pool is hittin’ the road. We have the tour dates and VIP pass information.

Drowning Pool is hittin’ the road and touring the US. Tickets are on sale now.

Drowning Pool is:

Ryan McCombs: Lead vocals
C.J. Pierce: Guitars/vocals
Stevie Benton: Bass/vocals
Mike Luce: Drums/vocals

The all-American anthemic rock band Drowning Pool has persevered through the death of their first singer and losing their second, emerging a stronger unit than ever before. From presenting the Lane Evans Health Act to then Senator Barack Obama, and coming back with their first consecutive album with a singer, vocalist Ryan McCombs, Drowning Pool continue to survive.

On a scale from 1 to 10, when measuring the highs and lows of Drowning Pool’s 12-year career, drummer Mike Luce candidly states that the band has experienced both extremes. When success comes — and it often does — it’s euphoric, he says. But when there were crashes — and there were a few —“You pick up and move on. It isn’t easy, but it’s life. The highs and lows make you appreciate everything that’s good. Stuff happens, terrible stuff, to everybody. You try to use it somehow to make something good come out of it.”

“To use a Spinal Tap reference, at the highest times we were cranked up to 11,”  Luce says. “It was the greatest. We were all young, and we’d wanted this all our lives. To play music with your friends for a living — it’s better than winning the lottery. These are dreams and aspirations that I’d had since I first held a pair of drumsticks in my hand. We got lucky, we were on Cloud Nine — to be the Ozzfest darlings, in Rolling Stone, on MTV. We felt like the band was on its way to world domination. Nobody sees the black cloud around the corner.”

The tour kicks off in their home town of Dallas, Tx.  If you would like to the chance to hang with the band, an autographed set list, a $5 gift card to store, a killer Drowning Pool T-Shirt and a collectible Drowning Pool Laminate and Lanyard! Check out the VIP offer on the Drowning Pool website.

With unemployment and a very challenging economy, many charities are experiencing an increased demand for their programs and services. Yet, the same charities are likely struggling with a decrease in revenue and limited staff resources.   With that in mind, Kapco and our corporate partners are pleased to underwrite and stage Kapco’s Grand Slam Charity Jam that will benefit over 50 Southeastern Wisconsin charities.   This exciting and unique event will provide an ideal avenue for charities to raise funds and awareness of their vital missions, without having to extend significant staff and financial resources.  Our goal is to raise at least $100,000 that will be divided among our participating charities. The Grand Slam Charity Jam will take place on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Potawatomi’s Woodland Dreams Ballroom and Northern Lights Theater.  This will be a “can’t miss,”  high energy, visually stunning, and extremely fun annual event.  The headliner will be SUGAR RAY – famous for a number of hit songs including “FLY”  “EVERY MORNING” “SOMEDAY” and “WHEN IT’S OVER.” The event will feature a number of celebrities including American Idol stars Kimberley Locke and Paris Bennett, football legend Leroy Butler, and our host, Kristin Bauer, a star of HBO’s TRUE BLOOD.  This type of celebrity, high profile event is rare in Milwaukee’s philanthropic circles. The VIP Dinner Party will run from 5:30 pm until 7:45 pm in the Woodland Drams Ballroom and will include top-level food stations, live music, art auction featuring the original art of international artist Eric Waugh, celebrity appearances, red carpet walk, charity and sponsor exhibition area,  silent auction and voice auction. The ticket prices for the VIP Dinner Party (which include concert admission) range from $100 – $500 each. Corporate sponsors of the event will be given tickets and a reserved table for the VIP Party.  VIP/Corporate tables are available for $5000 and $2500. $5000 table buyers can pick a charity of their choice to receive a $2500 donation from the event proceeds. The Grand Slam Concert will be a 2-3 hour concert starting at 8:00 pm in the gorgeous, intimate Northern Lights Theater. The concert will feature Sugar Ray, American Idol stars Kimberley Locke and Paris Bennett, live art by international artist Eric Waugh, and appearances by other special guests.  There will be beverage table service for our ticket buyers on the main floor of the theater. Upon conclusion of the event, artists, volunteers and sponsors will have the opportunity to attend an Afterparty in Potawatomi’s Tribal Room offering gorgeous views of the Milwaukee skyline. Joe Hite will perform live at the event. Tickets can be purchased at

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Transfomers 3 dark of the moon interview
Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and learn its secrets, which could turn the tide in the Transformers’ final battle.

An interview with cast member Penny Gibbs about her experience working on Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Transformers (blending in with local police officers) arrive at the Packard plant to start filming Transformers:  Dark of the Moon.

A generation’s greatest achievement. Our nation’s proudest moment. A secret hidden for 40 years.

How did you find out they needed extras and how did you go about getting the part?
I found out about Transformers 3 on the internet, through a website for local actors and on Facebook. Facebook is actually a great resource for actors!

Did you get fed?
Yes! We had a great breakfast everyday, then we moved to set and another holding areas and there is always Kraft Services with water and snacks available. If we stayed late enough, and we usually did, we were also fed lunch usually about 6 pm.
In this video several Transformers from Optimus Prime to Bumblebee are being driven & moved around the city from one location to another in Detroit during the filming of Transformers: Dark of The Moon

Did you wear your own clothes ?
No, I went in for wardrobe fitting about a month or so before filming. While I was there other extras were there getting fit for a 1960’s scene and I was so jealous of the really groovy clothes they got to wear! I was put in an unattractive outfit which I was told was going to be destroyed and burned for the scene I was going to do! I was no longer jealous! I also was given another ‘clean’ outfit which I ended up never wearing.

How many days were you there and what did you do during down time?
I was on set for 3 days. Usually during downtime I bring a magazine, or a book, a script or sides if I have any to memorize and always my iPod. But what usually happens is I end up socializing with the other extras. I usually know several people or wind up meeting some really great people and we just chat or play games while waiting!

Did you meet any of the stars? If so who and tell us about your experience.
This was one of the rare instances that I didn’t get to talk to one of the stars. For some reason, one of the stars will always come over and say something to me! Even if its just “will you pass me some butter” that Topher Grace said to me on a different movie called The Double. It was at that moment I developed an insane crush and I totally forgot what butter was and he had to point it out to me (he is SO cute in person omg)! Pretty much every movie one of the stars will want to talk to me. But I did see Shia and Josh who looked incredibly handsome!

Tell us, no spoilers please, about your experience in general.
I was SO excited to work on this set and I wasn’t even a Transformers movie fan. I saw the first one and barely remember it! But when I saw Bumble Bee, Maximus Prime, and the bad robot cars race around the ruined, destroyed streets of Detroit, I was HIGHLY impressed!

What did you take away from the experience?
A sore foot. Seriously I spent 3 days running for my life as fast as I could in heels and my left foot hasn’t been the same since! By the 3rd day, I was in flip flops and hobbling for my life as fast as I could.

I don’t think Penny is in this clip but it is an example of the work she did.

Was working on Transformers 3 exciting and fun?
HELL YES! I saw some amazing scenes with some incredible vehicles, complete with explosions and handsome Josh doing hand to hand combat in a sexy outfit!?

Staged explosions on one of the Detroit sets of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, on Clifford street at Woodward.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is due out July 1, 2011. Visit the official website. This film is not yet rated.

More about Penny Gibbs

Would you also tell us a little bit about how you got started in acting?

Well back in the summer of 2008 I, like half of Michigan, was floundering in a stink hole economy. I happened to watch the news one night and saw that an agency was accepting people to keep on file to work as extras in movies. For $10, they took 2 photos, a head shot and a body shot and will keep all your info on file in case they need people for be cast as extras. I went because I always wanted to be in movies, so I thought “what the heck, maybe I will get to be in a movie one day” and I went to the casting call.
I got an email the next month to be in a TV movie called “Prayers for Bobby” starring Sigourney Weaver. I spoke to a couple of the stars, Dan Butler who played Bulldog on Frasier and Susan Rattan both who were very sweet and friendly! I was TOTALLY hooked! That was the first year of our tax incentive for films and I started getting called to do a movie every month. I met and spoke to tons of celebrities, been and did so many interesting things that I never would have done otherwise.
I decided I wanted more and took some acting classes at a local actors workshop. I studies for two years and it did me a world of good! I have always been pretty shy and they had me doing something every night that was way out of my comfort zone… which I needed!
Soon I started going on auditions for local independent films. Some I really really nailed and some I really screwed up, but I found it intoxicating! I started getting small speaking roles and even a few major roles in these indi films to build my resume and experience and I continued to do extra work. It seemed my weird luck that many times, the director would grab me and put me in a place by the star or have me do something cool where I would be seen.
I started doing music videos, commercials, done voice over work and even did some modeling! Soon I got a real agent who cast for speaking roles only.
Eventually I auditioned for a feature extra role in a large budget Hollywood movie, Cedar Rapids. The character was the “Frizzy Haired Woman”. Now I have gone my whole life trying NOT to be the frizzy haired woman, but there I was in a room with 15 other frizzy haired women all trying to be the frizziest. It was surreal.
I was the last to audition and I was in the audition room with Miguel Arteta, the director himself, for the shortest amount of time. As I left the building and got in my car to program my GPS for home feeling a bit dejected, I heard a tapping at my car window. The PA was there and asking me if I had time to come in to be measured for wardrobe, I got the part! I was the only one who brought a head shot/resume and when the director asked me to improvise a scene, I went into autopilot like I was trained to do and wasn’t at all nervous like I would have been without training!
Cedar Rapids was the most incredible experience I had ever had on set! I was given my own trailer, with my wardrobe and jewelry inside waiting for me inside! When we shot for 5 days in a hotel, I was given a hotel room with a hot tub in it! I was able to eat meals with the cast (Anne Heich, John C Reilly, Ed Helms, Mike O’Malley, Kurtwood Smith among others) and crew. If you have ever worked a movie you know how great it is to get the much better Crew food, usually extras and cast & crew do not eat together, but I was considered cast! I was on set for about 12 days total. I was even bumped to a small speaking part and was paid SAG wages!
All in all I still get a rush and just love watching movies make their magic and meeting all the incredible people I have met. I have seen and done such cool things like running for my life from imaginary flying killer-cars, dodged explosions, danced with and saw Sam Rockwell strip, hung out with a dangerous real Detroit motorcycle gang, and cheered on wild roller derby girls and futuristic robot boxers! I met A List celebs like George Clooney, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Pierce Brosnan and Gerard Iwanttohavehisbaby Butler among so many other incredible experiences. What a way to make a living!
