River and The Doctor

On the fate of River Song –
By Curt Wagner
This is a very long interview with Alex Kingston about River Song.  It is also the very best Alex Kingston/River Song interview I have read.

SPOILERS IF YOU ARE CURRENT WITH THE EPISODES!

Steven says he sort of knew the whole arc of River Song even before “Silence of the Library” or at that time, but you had no idea, right?
I had no idea at all, no. I was sent the script to look at. I had heard that “Doctor Who” had been revised by Russell T Davies, and I’d heard that it was a big success in England and everybody was thrilled that it was back because, pretty much, grandparents, great-grandparents, parents and children—there were literally like four generations that all have a connection to “Doctor Who” at the moment in England. It’s almost like a national treasure.

And so, but I had no sense of it because I was here [in L.A.]. And my agent just said, “Look, I’m going to send you these two scripts. Just have a read and see what you think.” And by the time I got to the end of the second script, I was crying.

I just found this little story of this journey that these two characters have, and quite obviously this woman has a very strong connection to the Doctor, but we have no idea who she is. And you can see the pain that causes her, but yet, you don’t know really why. And she gives up her life for him. It absolutely just hits a spot with me.

And so, I just thought, OK, well if it’s provoking this sort of reaction in me when I’m reading, I guess I’d better do it. And I thought that was it. And that wasn’t to be.

In “The Forest of the Dead,” River whispers something to the Doctor. Now was that that he would meet Amy and Rory and this whole thing that we’re seeing now or was that something that we don’t even know?
Spoilers. Spoilers.

We’re going to have a lot of those, I think. All right, so we will go on to the next question. When did you learn that you were coming back?
Well, I heard after we had done those two episodes. At the time, I didn’t know that David [Tennant] had already decided to sort of lay his coat to rest. I didn’t know that. I think it was half a year later that David was going to stop.

I was told after by Steven that it had always been the intention to bring River Song back, that her story wasn’t sort of done. And that in light of the fact that they were having a new Doctor and new assistant and it was a whole new team of producers, and there was a lot of pressure on this new team to be as good as, if not better than, the previous incarnation. And I think that they, for the sake of Matt and Karen as well, who are younger in terms of sort of work experience were relatively inexperienced. They hadn’t been acting for very long. I think they felt that it would be good to have a character that the audience could at least be familiar with and that would also maybe help and guide the two new actors in their sort of beginnings of their journey.

And so my character was written in. But what we did was, the first two episodes where the audience is introduced to the new Doctor were shot later. The very first episode that Matt shot was the one with me, which was the…

“Weeping Angels?”
Yes, “The Weeping Angels,” exactly. It took the pressure off them a little bit. … I kept saying to them, “You’ve got nothing to worry about, you’re great.” I immediately felt from Matt that he was going to be fantastic. We already had a great sort of on camera relationship. It was just so easy and he was so willing and ready just to play.

I think by the time we’d finished those two episodes, he was then able to go back and film the episode that would be the very first one where he was seen by an audience, and it gave him the chance to just be able to breath and relax into it a little bit more.

And then I was sort of told, “We would love to write more stories for River, whenever you are ready and available, just let us know and we’ll keep adding her in.” And certainly, it’s been really nice. “Let’s Kill Hitler,” I mean, that was a great episode for me. I had a lot of fun doing that, yeah.

Well, it’s fun because you got to play her differently.
Yes. Absolutely, absolutely.

With a sadistic pirate, gun-for-hire, so to speak.
Absolutely, yes. And, all of a sudden one realizes that actually she’s way more complicated. And in fact, she may not even be in control of what is happening to her or what has happened to her in her past that she can’t talk about, and neither can I. [Laughs.]

Oh come on! That leads me to more questions that will not be answered, I think. So in that episode, she regenerates from being Mels into River and she doesn’t know who River is. I think the Doctor said, she’s just new or just starting out, or whatever. So, previously when they would meet in their timelines, she always knew a whole lot more than he did. So how do we get this flip suddenly? Do you understand how that happened?
Well, what I believe is, whenever she time travels, she never knows exactly what Doctor she is going to meet or at what stage of their relationship they will be at. She has no clue. So she could time travel again and she could suddenly be with a different Doctor, but we don’t know that. And she can’t tell us.

Right. So it wasn’t sort of set in stone about they always travel opposite each other. They still sort of meet up at different times in both of their timelines and it’s still willy-nilly a little bit.
Yes. [Laughs.] And I’m just saying, “yes.” [Laughs.]

Read all of the interview with spoilers for anyone not current with the episodes.

A German patrol arrives in the valley, the purpose of their mission a mystery. Sarah begins a faltering acquaintance with the patrol’s commanding officer, Albrecht, and it is to her that he reveals the purpose of his mission – to claim an extraordinary medieval art treasure that lies hidden in the valley. But as the pressure of the war beyond presses in on this isolated community, this fragile state of harmony is increasingly threatened.

Doctor Who just ended and I am so excited I am having trouble typing. I actually screamed at one point. Next week is too far away! I am going to watch it again and again. It is one of those episodes that I will love for a long time.  All of I can think of is endless adjectives and I have given myself a headache from being so excited.

First I would like to say that I want a cybermat. They are weirdly cute.

Doctor Who’s Matt Smith Takes An Ood Goes To School

This is a very comfortable Doctor Who. At times it worked a  little too hard to feel sad for the Doctor but not to the point of being annoying. The Doctor definitely needed a hit of Prozac. Matt Smith is an amazing actor.

Craig is back and a little suspicious that the Doctor showing up signals something alien is going on around him. Smart man.

Doctor Who’s Matt Smith is nominated for a Stonewall Award for his sensual  gay role in “Christopher and His Kind”.  Beautifully heartbreaking video.

“In 1931 budding author Christopher Isherwood goes to Berlin at the invitation of his friend W. H. Auden for the gay sex that abounds in the city. Whilst working as an English teacher his housemates include bewigged old queen Gerald Hamilton and would-be actress Jean Ross, who sings tunelessly in a seedy cabaret club. They and others he meets get put into his stories. After a fling with sexy rent boy Caspar he falls for street sweeper Heinz, paying medical bills for the boy’s sickly mother, to the disapproval of her other son,Nazi Gerhardt. With Fascism rapidly rising Christopher returns to London with Heinz but is unable to prevent his return to Germany when his visa expires. Years later Christopher, now a successful writer, returns to Berlin for a final meeting with Heinz, now married with children.” More on IMDB.

Doctor Who’s Matt Smith visited students at Oakley Junior School, Basingstoke, they were only expecting to see a preview of their three-minute show in assembly. They were shocked to find Matt Smith himself and an Ood from the popular series also turned up for the screening.

“They did a brilliant job” said Matt Smith he was impressed  of the work done by winning script-writers.

We have all been wondering,

“When is Doctor Who returning for Season 7?”

Unfortunately, it is going to be a while. We do not have the latest issue of the Doctor Who Magazine, which arrived today, but Doctor Who TV, a UK fan site, has a copy and reported the magazine “officially confirmed” the fall 2012 return of the show.

Take pleasure in the current run of Doctor Who while you can! Sadly, the wait for the next series will be a very long one.

Because of the  9 month long shoot on the seventh series not beginning until February 2012, it is going going to be impossible to have a Spring start. The very best  we can hope for will be an Easter special which will make  the long wait easier to take. There is no promise of an Easter Special.

Lyrics:

So I was watching Season 4 the other week the one where Donna and the Doctor fought the giant killer bees And it got me thinking man, If I was forced to date a man then surely he would be the only one for me

we’d fly round in his TARDIS through the rifts of space and time and through it all I’d know that I’d be his and he’d be mine

Oh Doctor won’t you mend my broken heart and tell me that we’ll never be apart? If there were a race I’m sure I’d win the pennent for the man love that would come from David Tennant

Intelligence unmatched I’m sure he’d be the perfect catch the sonic screwdriver to save me from despair Although I must disclose that he may have a thing for Rose with two, surely he’d have one heart to spare

*Insert Kazoo theme*

We’d fly round in his TARDIS through the rifts of space and time and through it all I’d know that I’d be his and he’d be mine

Oh Doctor won’t you mend my broken heart and tell me that we’ll never be apart? If there were a race I’m sure I’d win the pennant for the man love that would come from David Tennant

And although it may be slightly awkward when its said from you to me there comes a point where each man finds his sexuality And though he’d try his dardest just to get me in the mood I’d find him better naked with a vagina and some boobs And I spose that really matters when it all comes down to it we could have no Homan babies So I guess alone I’ll sit

Zak Bagans, paranormal investigator and star of the Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures” releases his first book “Dark World”. Bagans takes fans behind the scenes on some of his favorite investigations and give aspiring paranormal investigators tips on ways to get the most out of their investigations.

Article by Suzanne Philips/Photo courtesy Victory Belt Publishing

Paranormal investigator Zak Bagans is a pretty recognizable guy.  He is the lead investigator on the hugely popular Travel Channel show “Ghost Adventures” and is the host and executive producer for the new show “Paranormal Challenge”.  A lot of people probably think they know quite a bit about him from watching him on television, but his new book “Dark World: Into the shadows with the lead investigator of the Ghost Adventures Crew” gives readers an unfiltered look into both the man and his many investigations.

With the help of friend and writer Kelly Crigger, Bagans divulges information about his life and the incident which ultimately led him into paranormal investigation.  The book explores some of the more famous investigations that Bagans has been on (Moundsville State Penitentiary, Sloss Furnace and Bobby Mackey’s  Music World, among many others) and gives readers more behind the scenes information that you didn’t see on television.

Possible Haunted Residence in Las Vegas Investigated by Las Vegas Paranormal Authority

Kelly Crigger, a successful writer and former military man who has written numerous books and articles on Mixed Martial Arts, tells CFM how he became involved with “Dark World”.   “I was watching Zak’s show (Ghost Adventures)  about 2 years ago when I noticed he was wearing an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) shirt” says Crigger.  “Since I was a writer for a MMA magazine at the time, I contacted him to ask if he was a fan of the sport. He was, so I wrote an article about him in FIGHT! magazine called Boo Jitsu (http://www.kellycrigger.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Boo-Jitsu.pdf ).

“After that he asked me to be on his Halloween, 2009 live show at the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia and we struck up a friendship. The book just sort of happened when we were talking about writing one night.”  Crigger was a bit of a skeptic about the paranormal in the beginning. ” I was a middle-of-the-road guy when it came to the paranormal until I met Zak. After going on a few investigations with him and having several unexplained things happen, I’m more of a believer.”

“Ghost Adventures” Stars Come to Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas for Fan Event In October

The book is written in a very conversational style and is hard to put down.  The reader feels like they are sitting in a room with Bagans and picking his brain about his paranormal knowledge.  His wit and intelligence really come across on the page and there are a few laugh out loud moments in the chapters.

While the in-depth look at some of the more famous investigations is certainly a fascinating read, one of the best things about the book is the tips that Bagans includes for other aspiring paranormal investigators.  These sections really read like  a “how to” guide for newer investigators.  He breaks down the different types of equipment and explains not only how to use it but the scientific principles behind the devices.  This is invaluable information and is recommended reading for paranormal groups looking to expand their own investigations.

“Dark World” sold out in many outlets the morning it was released and bookstores have been scrambling to order extra copies.  Call your local bookstore or try www.amazon.com to get your hands on your own copy.  Whether you are a fan of  Zak Bagans, a paranormal investigator or a skeptic wanting to find out if what you see on TV is real, this book will not disappoint.  For those of you in the Lexington Kentucky area, Bagans will also be doing a book signing at this weekend’s “Scarefest”. For tickets and information on that event, check out www.scarefest.com.

This is a disappointing result for Doctor Who, as many will not have seen All-Star Family Fortunes as strong competition. Mr. R (names withheld to protect client’s privacy) has been experiencing some unexplained phenomena in his home.  The occupants have heard footsteps on the upstairs landing when no one has been upstairs.  When they go upstairs to check it out, they find that the rooms are empty.  In the garage, a toolbox has picked itself up several inches off the ground and fell back to the floor.  Mr. R picked up an old Conquistador statue down the street from his house that someone had left out for trash.  It had a broken leg and Mr. R has set out to repair it.  The statue lives in the garage and often Mr. R and his family have come back into the garage to find the statue in a different position than when they left it.  They have heard banging and what sounds like people trying to enter the house from the door leading into the garage.

Statue at start of investigation

LVPA founder Wallie L. brought a team of 6 paranormal investigators to Mr. R’s house for an evening investigation to try to get some answers for the family.  The team set up infrared cameras and digital audio recorders throughout the home.  They also brought full spectrum cameras (which is able to see in a fuller spectrum that the human eye) as well as K-2 and Mel Meters, which measure fluctuations in EMF (electro magnetic frequency).  All of the equipment was monitored from “command central” which had been set up in the kitchen of the house.  Any anomalies found were notated for further investigation during the evidence review process.

Tool box that was reported to have picked up and slammed down in garage

Teams of investigators split up into different areas of the home which seemed to have the most reports of activity to do EVP sessions and attempt to communicate.  EVP’s of Electronic Voice Phenomenon are “spirit voices” caught on an audio recorder that are not heard at the time of the session.  The team did several sessions in the garage area as well as the master bedroom, where the claims were the greatest.  Mr. R sat in on one such session in the garage and he became very nauseous and had to leave the room.  Sometimes when spirits are present it can cause physical reactions in certain individuals, causing them to get chills or nauseous.

At the beginning of the investigation, Wallie took photos of the conquistador statue and the garage.  At one point during the investigation, Mr. R’s son J. was looking for an item that Mr. R wanted and went out into the garage.  He came running back into the kitchen and was visibly shaken.  He told Wallie that the statue had moved.  Wallie and the team immediately went outside and took photos of the statue which was, indeed, in a different position.

Statue after moving to different position

A small team of the investigators went into the master bedroom and attempted to communicate with a “spirit box”, which scans radio frequencies continuously at a high rate of speed and is believed to be able to allow the spirits to communicate over the “white noise” it produces.  The LVPA team was asking questions and getting what seemed to be credible responses over the device.

LVPA Investigators Diane G. and Murad K. using the "spirit box"

At another point, a team of investigators was in the garage area, while the rest of the team was at “Command Central”.  Very distinct footsteps were heard upstairs. Two of the investigators ran upstairs to check it out and found no one on the upstairs floor.  The footsteps were also heard clearly by the team investigating in the garage.

LVPA's Russell C. at Command Central

Wallie L. says that he found the family to be “very credible. Mr. R and J spend a lot of time fixing engines, building and putting things together in the garage. This is the one area were the most phenomenon happens to father and son. When the father found the statue on the curb with the broken leg and brought it home to repair, I believe the spirit get jealous or angry because of  the time the father and son spend together (working on projects in the garage).”

Wallie further adds ” I believe the house has 2 or 3 spirits, 1 male, 1 female or 1 child. The spirits seem to want to scary the family apart. So far family has not gotten too scared. This investigation is on going and LVPA will conduct another investigation in October.”

“Ghost Hunters” stars Steve Gonsalves, Dave Tango, Amy Bruni and Bruce Tango spend four days at the 2011 Dragon Con holding panel discussions and meet and greets with fans of the Syfy show.

Steve Gonsalves

Fans of the wildly popular “Ghost Hunters” show on the Syfy channel were excited for the 2011 Dragon Con.  Some of their favorite stars from the hit paranormal show which paved the way for all of the paranormal shows that have followed were on hand for four days of panel discussions and autograph and photo opportunities.  Investigators Steve Gonsalves, Dave Tango and Amy Bruni joined Dave’s father Bruce Tango, who is a guest investigator on the show for the Atlanta event.

The panel discussions were a give and take with the stars asking the audience questions and the fans getting the opportunity to find out more about the making of the show and the lives of those on it.  Each panel started out with Tech Manager Steve Gonsalves asking the audience if anyone was in a paranormal group and what they called their groups.  All of the TAPS members had a genuine, easygoing way about them and the audience really responded to them.  They are honestly just like they appear on television and it was refreshing to see that the easy camaraderie that they enjoy onscreen is not just put on for the cameras.  Steve and Tango were both just as much of a comedy duo off-screen as they are on, and they had the audiences laughing out loud at numerous points throughout the panels.

Dave Tango, Steve Gonsalves

Fans were given the opportunity to ask questions and they were as varied as the audience members in attendance.  One fan wanted to know what the crew did before getting into paranormal investigation.  Amy Bruni was a project manager, Steve Gonsalves and Bruce Tango were both police officers and Dave Tango was a magician.  During one of the panels Dave actually came out and performed a little magic for the audience!  Fans were also curious as to what got them involved in the paranormal.  Bruce Tango said that he had an experience when he was 6 years old that was traumatizing and stuck with him ever since.  Amy Bruni saw an apparition at 9 years old as the house that she grew up in was haunted.  Dave Tango said that for him it was more of just a curiosity.  His father would bring home books and movies about the paranormal and Dave got interested from that.  Steve Gonsalves said that he was “watching a film called “The Entity” with my mom when I was about 5 or 6 years old.  My mom would cover my eyes during certain parts and I would peek around her fingers.  I was pretty freaked out and my mom told me that it was all make-believe. When I saw the end credits (of the film) it said it was based on a true story and I was like Mom why are you lying to me?” Ever since then he tried to find out more about the paranormal and investigate it.

Amy Bruni

With numerous investigations behind them, is there one place that the crew would most like to investigate?  Dave Tango says the Paris Opera House, Amy Bruni said Graceland, Bruce Tango wants to do the Coliseum in Italy and Steve Gonsalves said the pyramids in Egypt.  The Amityville house was also high on the list.  “We tried to do it” says Gonsalves. “Our producer went and knocked on the door.  They wouldn’t return calls.  The owners didn’t want to promote the stories.  Maybe now that the house is going to have new owners soon, we might try again.”

Bruce Tango

One fan favorite episode is from the notoriously haunted Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky.  Fans will be excited to learn that the “Ghost Hunters” crew will be returning to Waverly for an episode this season!  Another favorite  location is the creepy Eastern State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania.  Steve Gonsalves shared a really interesting story about filming at Eastern State.  “We investigated it in season 1 and it was really run down.  We went back 2 1/2 to 3 years later and it had been renovated and cleaned up.  I was walking down a hallway and a piece of paper got stuck to my foot.  I pulled it off and it was a piece of paper with our equipment notes and Grant’s doodles from the last time we were there 2 1/2 to 3 years earlier!”

Amy Bruni, Dave Tango

“Ghost Hunters” has featured many Celebrity “guest investigators” over the years, but Meatloaf has been on the show several times and has proved to be one of the most enthusiastic investigators they could have found.  Lots of spirit activity seems to happen when he is around and Gonsalves surmises “It could be his energy.  He is so in love with investigating.  He doesn’t want a break, he just wants to keep going.  He was really adamant the first time that he not only get to go on the investigation, but that he be able to help review the evidence as well.”  Amy Bruni agrees “He feels like he is a conduit – that’s the word he uses – a conduit.  He told me that his entire life he has had strange things happen to him which is what got him interested in the paranormal.”

Tech Manager Steve Gonsalves’ phobias are well documented on the show.  One fan asked if he really has the phobias about flying and spiders that are so often featured in the show and he confirmed that he does.  His fear of flying has led to him not being able to participate in certain investigations and someone in the audience suggested to him that he try Xanax so that he could get on the plane and go with the rest of the team.  “If I told you the drugs that had been in my system to try to fly, YOU would pass out” says Gonsalves.

Along with the panels, the team also had meet and greets with fans who wanted to take photos with the stars or get an autograph. They were so gracious to everyone who turned up and seemed particularly happy to be able to spend time with their fans.

The new season of “Ghost Hunters” is currently airing on the Syfy channel on Wednesday nights.  If you haven’t checked out the “Ghost Hunters” on Syfy, find out what you are missing!

Karen Gillan as Amy Pond in Doctor Who “The Girl Who Waited”.

Doctor Who: “The Girl Who Waited”

“One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
Go ask Amy when she’s 50 years old.”

I wanted to title the review Doctor Who “Amy Through The Looking Glass”  but it was too much of a spoiler.  In fact, that title would pretty much say it all. White rabbits are replaced by white robots in this modern day version of “Alice In Wonderland”.  The sunshine and flowers LSD fans of the 60’s believed that Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) was under the influence of an hallucinogenic when he wrote “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. This episode definitely reminds me of an acid trip.

They go to a planet where they find a door with two buttons. Rory ( Arthur Darvill) and the Doctor (Matt Smith) pick the green button Amy (Karen Gillan) picks the red and ends up in a different time stream. The location was setup for people quarantined with a virus that won’t hurt humans but will infect and kill Time Lords in 24 hours. This means that the Doctor has to stay in the TARDIS and Rory has to rescue Amy.  (Arthur Darvill was ready for his close up and lead the episode beautifully.) Rory finds Amy in a short time. For Amy it is 36 years in the future and they have left her there to fight off white robots that think she is infected with a virus. They want to give her medication meant for another race and their “kindness” will kill her.

The best part of this episode is definitely the acting. Karen Gillan gives an amazing performance as the older Amy. She becomes a kick ass warrior!  You feel like you are actually seeing two different people.

Arthur Darvill gives an absolutely heartbreaking performance! Doctor Who’s episodes have certainly not allowed him to reach his potential other  than being able to die on cue. This episode lets him shine and really show his acting ability.

Inevitable Doctor Who MST3K Moment:

If you’re wondering how he eats and breathes
and other science facts (la la la),
Then repeat to yourself, “It’s just a show,
I should really just relax (la la la)

Rory finds Amy as a much older woman and is intent on bring her back no matter what. He still loves her even when she is old. She is pissed at being left for so long but he wins her heart again.

How do the Doctor Who writers turn back time and get the young Amy back?
Well, they don’t there are actually two time streams and only one ages Amy. Yeah? What? (la la la)
AND Rory is in the stream with the aging Amy and he doesn’t age. (la la la)

The Doctor tricks Rory and when Rory returns to the TARDIS he has to chose between old future Amy and  young present time Amy. Arthur Darvill emotions are there and easy to see. This episode finally shakes of his “tin-dog” statues. Hopefully, for good.

Favorite funny line: “Woman with a sword, don’t push it.”

Made me cry a little: “Rory is the most beautiful man I ever met.” An Amy consensus.

Impossible choice:  Back in the TARDIS the Doctor makes Rory chose Amy then or Amy now. He loves them both.

Excellent gratuitous use of an Doctor Who inside joke:  About the glasses with a built in camera, “still, anything beats a fez”.

Something cool: Future Amy develops a sonic “probe” that helps her to survive. The guys upset her by saying it is a screwdriver. She finally acquiesces and admits it is a screwdriver.

Just for fun movie reference: Future Amy has disarmed a robot and made it her pet.  Her pet is named “Rory” and has a drawn face on it like Wilson in the Tom Hanks’ movie  “Cast Away”.

Unanswered question: Why did the TARDIS allow the Doctor to accidentally go to quarantined location where he could be infected?

“Haunted Collector” star John Zaffis brings his family of investigators to the 2011 Dragon Con to discuss their hit Syfy show.

Article and photos by Suzanne Philips

John Zaffis

If you ask anyone in the Paranormal field who their inspiration is, one name keeps popping up – John Zaffis.  With over 30 years experience investigating the paranormal and work on some very high profile cases, Zaffis is the go-to guy when one needs paranormal advice.  He has appeared on popular recent paranormal tv shows such as “Ghost Adventures” and “Ghost Hunters”.  Zaffis himself has delved into the paranormal television world with his Syfy show “Haunted Collector”.  Zaffis and his team travel to locations that are having unexplained activity and identify and remove any items that they feel might causing the activity.  Zaffis remembers a case that he had years ago in which a client “had a nick nack that seemed to be causing some paranormal activity.  It got me thinking, if people and places can be haunted, why not items?”

The “Haunted Collector” investigation team is really a family – literally.  Zaffis is joined by his son Chris and daughter Aimee, as well as Beth Ezzo and Brian Cano, whom Zaffis considers adopted children.  The team works with their clients to try to locate “trigger objects” which might be the source of the problems in their home or business and Zaffis will remove the item, at the client’s request, and relocate it to his paranormal museum, in hopes that the activity will cease.

Chris Zaffis

There is a huge barn on the Zaffis property in which all of the “haunted” items are placed.  What you don’t always see on the show is the preparation that goes into the items before that happens.  ” We do bindings and prayers over the items before they get put into the barn.” says Zaffis.  “I also had a lot of things done to the barn when it was being built to secure it, such as putting crystals into the foundation.  The contractors thought I was nuts!” Zaffis also said that the Syfy show “doesn’t show all of the things that Chris and I do to seal the building.”  A common misconception that has come out of the show is that Zaffis stores all of the items in his basement but they are actually stored in a barn on his property.  Chris Zaffis commented that “we have enough stuff for three barns.  It’s overflowing.” And team member Brian Cano feels “every time I go into the barn, it’s like “Warehouse 13″ in there.  I don’t want to touch anything!”

Brian Cano

When the “Haunted Collector” team locates an item that they feel might be causing activity in a location, they always give the owner a choice on leaving the item in the home or having the team remove it to a secure location.  “In our society today, people love having haunted items in their homes”, claims Zaffis.  Investigator Beth Ezzo agrees. “There is a huge market on ebay for supposedly “haunted” items.”  While Zaffis will respect the wishes of the client in regards to removing items for them, he says that there is a reason that he “doesn’t like to leave items in the home and bind them” (to try to contain the paranormal energy). “If they are still in a house with people, someone might touch it and it can become re-activated.” Is the team ever worried about items that they have taken out of people’s homes?  “Sometimes when I put an item in the car, the car will start to act up and have problems and I know that I am dealing with something really strong” says Zaffis.  Sometimes the item is so powerful that Zaffis recommends burying the item or putting it into a body of water.

What kind of haunted items does the team see the most of?  “Probably dolls” says Zaffis.  “People think they are all innocent and pure.”  One case saw a lady who had purchased over 140 allegedly haunted dolls and she brought them into her house and started seeing some paranormal activity.  “Ya Think”? laughs Zaffis.   The family wanted to dolls removed and the lady turned over about 70 of the dolls to Zaffis.  He did an EVP session (electronic voice phenomenon) over the dolls and got a creepy response that said “John Die”.  The lady kept some of the dolls and was still experiencing the activity.  Zaffis even had some car problems while transporting the dolls home.  “Dolls and Clowns are probably the creepiest items we get”.

Aimee Zaffis

“Haunted Collector” is still awaiting notification of renewal for a second season.  Check out www.syfy.com and email them telling them you would like to see more episodes of the show.  We will keep you posted at CFM on any new information about this great paranormal show.

Stars of Travel Channel’s new hit show “Paranormal Challenge” discuss the show and reveal secrets at 2011 Dragon Con.

Article and Photos by Suzanne Philips-Paranormal Challenge banner copyright The Travel Channel

Paranormal Investigator and “Ghost Adventures” star Zak Bagans debuted his new show “Paranormal Challenge” on June 17th on the Travel Channel. The show pits two teams of amateur ghost hunters against each other during a nighttime investigation in a legendary haunted location. With high-tech gear at their disposal to investigate the hotspots, these amateurs get a chance to prove their skills at collecting ghostly evidence. At the end of the lockdown, the teams present their findings to Zak and lead judge Dave Schrader (Darkness Radio) as well as two guest judges that rotate each week and feature experts in the paranormal field. The winners are selected based   on teamwork, their use of technology, their knowledge of the history of the location and the evidence collected.

Dave Schrader

Lead judge Dave Schrader visited the 2011 Dragon Con in Atlanta last week and brought with him judges Patrick Burns (“Haunting Evidence”), Chris Fleming (“Psychic Kids”) and Aaron Sagers (Paranormalpopculture.com) and Producer/Cinematographer Jay Wasley to discuss some of the things that you don’t get to see on the show and reveal some info on the upcoming final two episodes of the season.

Patrick Burns

One of the things that makes “Paranormal Challenge” unique is that two local paranormal groups are chosen to investigate a location that is well known to have significant paranormal activity.  These groups are then given a tour of the facilities paranormal hot spots and tools to help them to find the best evidence to present to the judges. “It’s like “Iron Chef” meets “Ghost Hunters”” is how judge Patrick Burns describes the show. “To see new teams each week brings an interesting challenge.  To see teams that are not polished in front of the camera is interesting.”  Judge Aaron Sagers feels that “part of the appeal of the show is giving these paranormal groups a chance to investigate with equipment they might normally not have access to.  It’s like the game show of the paranormal.”  Chris Fleming feels that the show premise “is exciting for the teams.  They get to do something that they are passionate about and put themselves to the test.”

Chris Fleming

Lead judge Dave Schrader says that the judges “are the voice of the viewer.  We are trying to convey what the audience is thinking.  All of the judges have to be really careful about not talking to the competing groups before the investigation.”  The judges and producers don’t want to appear to be showing favoritism and thus need to keep some seperation between themselves and the groups. Schrader also commented that the “rules for (groups competing on) “Paranormal Challenge” are really tough.”  Jay Wasley confirmed that “every square inch of the location is covered.  The competitors are always in view of the control room.  Lot’s of times those of us in the control room can see and hear things happening in the location that even the contestants don’t.”

Aaron Sagers, Jay Wasley

Executive Producer Zak Bagans, who is also lead investigator for Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures”, might seem like just the host of “Paranormal Challenge” but he is really involved in all aspects of the show.  “Zak is very hands on in both producing and hosting each episode” says Schrader.  “He reviews each episode and writes notes on them and also helps with editing”.  Schrader recalls one episode where a female team member  was constantly smacking her gum during the investigation.  This was contaminating their audio devices and would prove problematic when it came time to review the evidence.  Bagans wanted to stop the investigation and tell the lady to stop chewing her gum, but Schrader said no.  “We have to let the teams mess up and then explain to them why what they did was wrong.”

Schrader says that they “do get some weird teams that are horrible” and the judges and producers have to struggle to find something nice to say about them.  In the end it’s not only about winning the challenge, but also about educating both the teams and the viewers on how to properly run a paranormal investigation.

Dave Schrader, Patrick Burns

Although “Paranormal Challenge” has had a steady climb in viewership, Season 2 of the show is still in question.  “Travel Channel just picked up “Ghost Adventures” for 26 episodes for their next season.” says Schrader.  “If we film “Paranormal Challenge” at the same time, it would take Zak about 3/4 of the year just to film both shows.”  If the show does go for a second round, Schrader has some things that they would like to change. “Editors are not always paranormal people.  They go for the drama and the quick laugh and it may not always show the best paranormal evidence.  There is a lot more humor on set that you see in the final cut.”  They also have a nice list of judges that they want to bring in for the second season if it works out.

The final two episodes of this season, are going to take the show out with a bang.  In the USS Hornet investigation there is a piece of evidence that Dave Schrader calls “a game changer.  I wish I could tell you what it is.”  All he would say is that they had a piece of evidence that came in that they even had to get an expert in to explain to them.  The final episode is in Jerome, Arizona and that episode features a lot of turns and red herrings.  The viewer “won’t know who is going to win that episode until the end and they might be surprised by who does” says Schrader.  The time slot for the final two episodes is also shifting to a later 11pm time slot.

Catch the final two episodes of “Paranormal Challenge” on Fridays on the Travel Channel and stay tuned to CFM for more info on a possible Season 2 of the show as news becomes available.

Through empires of glass and civilizations of pure thought.
And a whole terrible wonderful universe of impossibilities.”

Word I am thinking about :  Crimson
Crimson is a great word. Maybe not a great word but a good word. A strong word. Who says Crimson? No one.  People say red. So why Crimson? Why is it in a Doctor Who episode again?

Someone should have said:  “Prisoner Zero has escaped.”  Or.  “Oh no, has Prisoner Zero escaped again?”
I can’t imagine any scenario where Amy, Rory or any Whovian sees a giant glass eye and wouldn’t say something about Prisoner Zero.

It would have been funny if someone had said. “”Am I bovvered?”, “Do I look bovvered?”

Doctor’s ego is firmly intact: He can’t figure out the Rubik’s cube and decides it “must be broken, rubbish, hate those things.”

Can you imagine what a diplomatic nightmare it would be to have the Doctor killed while visiting the US? Ever wonder who had  jurisdiction of over the Doctor’s murder?  Being in a national park it would fall under the jurisdiction of the US Park Police.  They handle the president and visiting dignitaries. The National Parks Swat team is an elite group that protects the President and Vice President. USPP swat would have been sent in to get  that astronaut out of the lake. If they were unable to operate in an aquatic environment then Navy Seals would have been brought in. There would have to be hand to hand combat. They would never get permission to use explosives in the lake unless there was a threat to the President.
