The 80s provided us with some of the best live-action and animated fantasy movies ever. Let me ‘splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. There were swords, dragons, magic, unicorns, Hobbits, Muppets and Inigo Montoya to entertain us. The collection makes it difficult to select the top ten and impossible for everyone to agree which films should be on the list.  When the opportunity to write/argue about the top ten fantasy movies of the 80’s came up I  said, “As you wish.”

This was my opportunity to go up against Tom Fonss comedian and author who had to put together his top ten list of 80’s fantasy films for CineFix. The first thing I checked on his list was The Princess Bride. It had to be number one. Anything else would be, “Inconceivable!”  It might actually be the number one fantasy movie of all time.

He did not disappoint me.

Tom Fonss’ list for the best 80’s Fantasy Films:[hana-code-insert name=’Pre Order DVD’ /]
10) Dragonslayer
09) Ladyhawke
08) The NeverEnding Story
07) Clash of the Titans
06) Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal
05) Willow
04) Legend
03) Conan the Barbarian
02) Excalibur
01) The Princess Bride

With the exception of  Conan the Barbarian, I agree with the films listed but not necessarily the order.  Conan the Barbarian? Ummm no. The NeverEnding Story would be third on my list. It is one of the most unusual movies from that time period.

My list included:

The Last Unicorn written by Peter S. Beagle is an animated fantasy film. A unicorn, the last of her kind lives in an enchanted forest. She ignores the dangers and sets out to find what happened to the other unicorns. The adventure, the music and the art makes it one of Bass & Rankins best works.

Time Bandits  It has been said that there are two kinds of people: those who “get” Time Bandits and those who don’t. Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam directed and is probably why some people don’t get it. An eleven-year-old boy accidentally winds up in a world populated by dwarves, spider-women and a drunken Napoleon. It is weird and funny with a bizarre ending.

Fonss “the ultimate cool movie nerd” makes a new list of films from a different category  each week for CineFix on YouTube. Cinefix’s Youtube Page CineFix is  “the ultimate destination for true movie buffs and filmmakers on YouTube.”  It is a smorgasbord of videos covering just about anything worth covering.  The first video that came up on the site for me was, “Arianny Celeste Strips for Pain and Gain Trivia” her jacket flew off and I opted out. “Iron Man 3 Trailer – Homemade Shot for Shot” seemed more to my taste. It was! That was an awesome video! Using the Cinefix subscription option I will see more Homemade Movies every Tuesday.

CineFix provide unparalleled behind the scenes access, candid interviews and dynamic original programming by both new and established voices for die-hard film lovers. It’s the most passionate film network that covers the biggest blockbusters, uncovers the smallest independent gems and entices members to contribute, critique and create.

Tom Fonss currently writes and performs in the acclaimed Groundlings Sunday Company. He is a founding member of the sketch comedy group “Big Boss Comedy.” He’s a performer in “Crit Juice,” a podcast and video series following actors and comedians playing Dungeons& Dragons while under the influence. He is the co-creator of “Petercannonball Productions” and the “Some Clean Shorts” sketch comedy web series. He’s been in numerous videos featured on “Funny or Die” and “College Humor.” He’s acted in plays throughout the Los Angeles area, including Suzan-Lori Parks’ “365 Days/365 Plays” at the Pacific Resident Theatre, and many others at the Odyssey Theater, the L.A. Theatre Ensemble, and the MET Theatre. He also performs improv regularly with Serious V-Necks, Dragon Dragon Dinosaur, and Hospital Flight.

SPIRIT OF THE SUWANNEE MUSIC PARK, LIVE OAK, FLA –

It was four days of continuous music not interrupted one bit by a rain storm that lasted into the night Friday when the 9th Annual Wanee Music Festival returned to The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (SOSMP) in Live Oak, Fla where the artists that can be described as the royalty of music perform.

An estimated 60,000 fans of bands like The Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, Michael Franti, and his band, Gov’t Mule, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Leon Russell, Tower of Power, Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang, Electric Hot Tuna, Maceo Parker, Steel Pulse, North Mississippi Allstars, Blackberry Smoke, Galactic & Friends, The Greyboy Allstars, Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars featuring Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Jumpin Johnny Sansone, Waylon Thibodeaux and Johnny Vidacovich; Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio, The Lee Boys, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, The Revivalists, Monophonics, Boombox, Oli Brown Band, Flannel Church and The Yeti Trio. Wanee Wednesday Happy Hour featured Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Cope, Kettle of Fish, Beebs & Her Money Makers, Juke and The Groves gathered to immerse themselves in their favorite music.

Wanee also had the traveling version of Jorma Kaukonen’s “Fur Peace Ranch” where fans could experience musician/songwriter workshops and lessons, all under the tutelage of world class musicians.

Fans began arriving early in the week before the April 17 opening night and by Friday, primitive camping sites were cram packed with vehicles parked bumper to bumper and festival goers having the time of their lives on the more than 800-acre campground on the banks of the famous Suwannee River. Dozens upon dozens of vendors with every type food imaginable, including pancakes and syrup for breakfast, pizza and much more, a huge selection of festival clothing that included belly dancers’ coin skirts with beaded matching tops for the festival junkie, blankets, drums, jewelry and on and on did a brisk business. Some vendors’ tents were lined up in triple rows and some extended out of sight into the camping area. Golf carts were among the mode of transportation along with a few bicycles but mostly these festival goers used their God-given ability to walk, yes, walk, on their ventures around the park! Thursday night’s Royal Southern Brotherhood performance at the Mushroom Stage (amphitheater) was filled jam-packed with swirling hula-hoopers, swaying music lovers and head-bobbing music aficionados who seemed oblivious to those around them. These same themes carried throughout the four-day festival that ended Saturday night or actually early Sunday morning. When Widespread Panic and The Allman Brothers performed late Saturday evening, the festival field was a sea of bodies swaying shoulder to shoulder, grooving to the music as far as the eye could see.

Strange as it may seem, Saturday evening at this world-wide known jam band music festival, the sounds of bluegrass began to waft through the oak trees in the Crafts Village where “Dr.” Don Miller, a long-time bluegrass radio DJ, broadcast his regular Saturday program from 5-7 p.m. over WQHL 98.1 The Big Country station from the SOSMP’s radio studio in the Crafts Village! It was easy to tell some festival goers who passed by may not have ever heard a thing called bluegrass music! Others just took a seat under the moss-laden oaks in front of the studio and enjoyed! One lady sat with her “chicken on a stick,” a 6 ft. pole with a 3 ft. tall paper stuffed chicken attached, garnering much attention!

Earworms Eww Gross

When I see “earworm” my first thought is Star Trek and that thing crawling towards Chekov’s ear in The Wrath of Khan. That isn’t really a worm it is a Ceti eel but just as gross. Once past that thought my mind goes to a woman Untold Stories of the ER and the pet worms she had living under her skin packed with dirt.

BUT! Thankfully an “earworm” is a gross little creature working it’s way to your brain according to Rhitu Chatterjeev it is,  “It’s just a silly little tune stuck in my head. I have no idea why it popped up this morning. And I just can’t get rid of it. Earworms are like “unwanted or intrusive thoughts,” says Daniel Levitin, a neuroscientist at McGill University in Montreal. ”

“Psychologists and neuroscientists have a scientific term for earworms. It is ‘involuntary musical imagery.’  In contrast, voluntary musical imagery is when we willingly think of a song, or a musical piece. It’s something we can control.”

Music has a tendency to get stuck in our heads. You know the experience – a tune intrudes on your thoughts and plays, and replays, in a never-ending loop. It happened recently to me. So, as a science reporter, I thought I’d try to find out why.

Several weeks ago, I was at home on a Sunday morning when, for no apparent reason, three words popped into my head – “Funky Cold Medina”.

That’s the name of a song performed by rapper Tone Loc. I’m told it was a hit in the 1990s, but I hadn’t heard it until the night before when a friend sang it at a karaoke bar.

I kept hearing the lyrics – “Cold coolin’ at a bar, and I’m looking for some action. But like Mick Jagger said, I can’t get no satisfaction.”

When the song reappeared in my head, I could hear my friend singing it again and again… and again.

I was stuck with it for nearly a day and a half, before it finally went away.

But it left behind a nagging question. Why do we get songs stuck in our heads in the first place?

  • The World newsroom nominates: Marcy Playground’s Sex and Candy, Nothing but the Music by the Backstreet Boys, The Sound of Music, Popcorn by Hot Butter, Rump Shaker by Wreckx-N-Effect

Earworm ‘triggers’

  • Recent music exposure
  • Repeated music exposure
  • Word triggers (see Faith shoebox example)
  • People triggers (where sight or memory of a person is associated with a song)
  • Situation trigger (eg weddings can cause you to remember your own first dance song)
  • Stress
  • Surprise
  • Dreams
  • Mind wandering

The Hyatt Regency at the Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport is gearing up for the 2013 Texas Frightmare Weekend.  Conceived by Loyd and Sue Cryer in 2005 as a three-day horror convention, the event takes place annually in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. True to its motto, “The Southwest’s Premier Horror Convention”, their goal is to provide fans with an unrivaled experience by celebrating all aspects of genre films. Texas Frightmare Weekend hosts celebrity appearances, autograph signings, screenings, exclusive parties and horror memorabilia vendors from all over the country. The event is also extremely proud to have featured the rising talents of many Texas “Frightmakers” in screenings, panel discussions and Q & A’s.

After humble beginnings at the tiny Grapevine Convention Center in Grapevine, TX, TFW (as it has begun to be called by attendees) is arguably the largest horror convention in the nation. The event boasts over 10,000 attendees annually and has hosted genre legends such as George A. Romero, Clive Barker, Malcom McDowell, Robert Englund, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Cary Elwes and hundreds more.

In 2012 the event moved to the Hyatt Regency inside the DFW to make room for its growing fan base. The new venue provides 93,000 square feet of event space (compared to the Grapevine Convention Center at 23,500 square feet) and 800 rooms.

It is a beautiful day, the sun is shining and you are having a good day. Then you turn on the radio and the DJ plays THAT song the one that makes you miserable. You need to listen to it again and you play over and over and over while you wallow in your misery.

That’s a Love Song.

We’ll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don’t need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don’t quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They’re not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

Let’s waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they’re all I can see

I don’t know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
would you lie with me and just forget the world?

When Comedienne Karen Rontowski is not entertaining live audiences, she is looking for dead ones.

Karen’s night job is stand-up comedy and her later night job is that of a Paranormal Investigator. Mixing comedy with the paranormal she performs at the top ParaCons including:  Frontier ParaCon (Stanley Hotel , Colorado), LA Supernatural Summit (Glen Tavern, Santa Clarita, CA), Phenominology 105 (Gettysburg, PA) and Saint Mary’s ParaCon (Virginia City, NV).  She recently opened for Britt Griffith of SyFy’s Ghost Hunters at the Pasadena Playhouse. A 20-year tarot reader, Reiki Master, and team member of Paranormal Investigation Group Spirit Rescue and X Paranormal, Rontowski likes to involve the supernatural/spiritual side of the trek in her ghost hunts. Though the best evidence comes from recorders, cameras, EMF meters, the most memorable paranormal experiences are often based on how the hunters
felt and what unfamiliar and interesting things they tuned into on a psychic level.
