Actor Sean Astin (‘The Lord of the Rings,’ ‘Rudy,’ ‘The Goonies’) discusses his running, including three L.A. Marathons. Actor Sean Astin — a.k.a. Samwise Gamgee in “The Lord of the Rings” — trekked across much of Middle-earth wearing hairy prosthetic feet.

It’s easy to be motivated with a legion of orcs on your tail. But on the streets of Los Angeles on regular old Earth, Astin must find the drive to run from within. On March 18, Astin ran the L.A. Marathon for the third time — but as he explained in a recent interview, he doesn’t always find it easy to push himself to lace up those shoes.

Sean Astin answers 5 Questions about running

Tell me how you got into running.
That’s kind of a bizarre approach to training. What’s going on here?
When you’re not running, do you miss it?
Tell me about your marathon experiences.
Being as you played Sam Gamgee, I have to ask: What’s your opinion on barefoot running?

2012 Jam audition winners Clay Brooker, Lyndie Burris, Rion Paige and Stephanie Renae

2012 Jam audition winners Clay Brooker, Lyndie Burris, Rion Paige and Stephanie Renae

SPIRIT OF THE SUWANNEE MUSIC PARK, LIVE OAK, FLA –
It took five hours of competition before a packed house, a run-off between nine top contestants with the judges still unable to pick a winner before the 2012 Suwannee River Jam final audition was finally settled April 7. All final April 7 audition winners will perform at the Jam at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Fla May 2-5!

Amidst the winners is an 11-year-old star who brought the house down with her last performance and had the entire crowd on its feet, screaming encouragement and clapping before the Jacksonville performer could finish her performance!

Another winner comes to the Jam straight from her experience at the 2012 American Idol contest where she made it all the way to #40 before being cut a few weeks ago.

The four winners, Rion Paige, Clay Brooker, Stephanie Renae and Lyndie Burris, will perform on the 1st Street Music & Sound Company/Budweiser Party Zone Stage at the amphitheatre during the Jam, according to 1st Street Music & Sound Company owner Steve Briscoe, who heads up the audition contests and books talent for the 1st Street Music & Sound Company/Budweiser Party Zone Stage at the Jam.

In addition, Briscoe said, the remaining five winners will also perform at the jam but at various other venues! They are Brittney Lawrence, Crystal Black, Kevin “Ski” Swenszkowski, Lauren Elise and Maci McDuffie. “We will find a place for you all to perform, whether it’s at the river stage, on the porch stage at the SOS Café or elsewhere,” Briscoe told the delighted winning contestants.

The contestants spent more than five grueling hours trying to win their spot on the Jam stage, at first singing two songs each before the final nine were called back to sing one more to help the judges make their decision. Still, the judges, all career artists themselves, said they couldn’t make a choice. It was then that Briscoe made the decision to let all nine perform during the Jam.

The four main winners are seasoned professionals who obviously came to win.

Rion Paige is a sixth grader in Jacksonville. Her performance brought tears to the eyes of the judges who said Rion had “brought your A game tonight!” Upon her last performance, the entire audience stood up, screamed, cheered and clapped for this little performer who kept right on singing through the last perfect note!

Clay Brooker, Waldo, brought a fantastic performance that was the essence of country today. His strong performance impressed the judges and the audience and made you feel you were truly in the presence of the next male country star.

Stephanie Renae (or Stephanie Renee as she is sometimes known) recently competed in the American Idol Contest, remaining in competition until she reached #40 where she was cut. “You look like a star, you’re a real winner,” judges told Stephanie, who was also an audience favorite with her flawless performance.

Lyndie Burris, the current reigning Ms. United America, sings with a band but performed as a solo act, bringing a star-quality performance that pleased the judges and the audience.

Judges and Briscoe said of the 18 contestants vying for the Jam stage spots, all were excellent performers but there were only so many slots available during the Jam. Contestants were chosen from various venues around North Florida over the last three months.

ANTI-BULLING VIDEO

A new anti-bullying themed video of Cathy-Anne McClintock’s song “No Matter What”—originally recorded with Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea on her 2009 self-titled debut album—debuted  at the “BKind”  event in March.

Starring a great cast of talented teens who all stand up for their friends: Tessa McClintock, Dreu Lambarena, Antonia Molina and some “Mean Girls” who weren’t mean at all!
Of Tessa’s adlib’d dialogue a grand thought stands out:”Own it”
Finding the strength to own who we are, and surrounding ourselves with people who allow us, and empower us, to be the individuals we want to grow to be is the inspiration of this story.

I am so proud of my friends that helped out on this project. We all filmed on the “beg steal and borrow budget” in Long Beach California and Seattle Washington.

After the birth of their first son Winston, Piper had joked, “I used to want a big family but now I am wondering if it would be OK if Winston was an only child! Seriously, I would like to have three children. I’m thinking of having two close together and leaving it a while, then having another.”

Piper and Fox already have a 3-year-old son, Winston.

Piper said: “That feeling of unconditional love. I used to think it was so cheesy when people said that before, but it’s something I finally understand. The smiling… it’s amazing.”

Doctor Who Official Photo Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman or Crying Over The Ponds

When a companion leaves Doctor Who he or she leaves us  broken-hearted,  wanting to know why they had to leave us.

Looking into the  face  of Jenna-Louise Coleman, I know it isn’t her fault that Amy and Rory are no longer in the TARDIS.

If I like her am I being disloyal?

My question is why do I feel like crying? Why is my heart breaking and should I hate her for replacing them?

The thought of welcoming her with open arms makes me feel like I am being disloyal. I don’t like this.  It hurts to let go.

I dread the start of the new season of Doctor Who. Losing Amy, Rory and River will be painful. Perhaps this is the one time that fans can feel what it likes to be an immortal or near immortal, always out living the people they love.

For now, maybe I can only wait and tell myself it is only a TV show…

The 25-year-old Jenna-Louise Coleman was confirmed as the  new Doctor Who companion . She’ll be taking over from Karen Gillan near the end of series 7. Coleman was interviewed by Radio Times,

“I wasn’t allowed to say it was Doctor Who at any point – not talking to my agent, not when I arrived at the audition…And I certainly couldn’t tell anyone at all what I was up to next.

“When she was auditioning, Karen Gillan had been given a codename, ‘Panic Moon’, which is an anagram of ‘companion’ – so I worked out that ‘Men on Waves’ is an anagram of ‘Woman Seven’ because this is the seventh series.

“Weirdly, seven is my lucky number and this is my seventh job.”

Sounds a smidgen over-the-top for an audition. This isn’t MI5, you know. OR IS IT?

“I have an idea of the story, of the character and of a few surprises, but I don’t know her name or where she’s from. I just told Steven [Moffat, the creator] and [producer] Caroline Skinner, ‘Don’t tell me anything until I need to know it.'”

“Normally you’re just reading in front of a camera, but with this it was so physical. We were using props and running around so it felt like playing – and like a partnership straight away.”

And what was it like to keep such a whopping secret for so long? (We always wonder how people do this – like those who have got through to the finals of the X Factor – how do they keep it a secret? We know they’ve signed scary contracts in blood, but still surely you’d tell your mum who would tell your grandpa who would tell the entire golf club?)

“When you keep a secret this big – I’ve kept this one for six weeks – the temptation to tell is all the more irresistable, especially as I live with three school friends.

“With girl politics being the way they are, I couldn’t tell just one friend. I had to phone one of them on the way to the press conference to tell her that I’d borrowed her shoes, in case she saw them in photos.”

The full interview can be read in this week’s Radio Times, out now.
