A recently discovered spider, Ctenus monaghani, will be named after actor Dominic Monaghan (Lost, The The Lord of the Rings). The spider was discovered in Laos by Dr. Peter Jager, a spider expert in the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany.

“As a lover of all things wild and a fan of spiders,” says Monaghan, “it is a real honor to have such a special creature named after my last name. The fact that it was found in Laos whilst making Wild Things makes it all the more special. Feel free to call me Spider-Man.”

The spider ran across Jager’s path during filming of Dominic Monaghan’s documentary series, Wild Things. Dr. Jager was a featured expert in the episode. He worked as consultant about the forests and caves of Laos.

The recently discovered spider is the Ctenus genus. These spiders are classified as wandering spiders. They roam across the jungle floor during the night and catch their prey with no web.

The first season of Wild Things was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Reality Series. Season Two of Wild Things is currently filming and is set for a 2014 premiere on BBC AMERICA.

The brand new spider is referred to within the journal, Zootaxa published June 11, 2013.

“Grimm” was everywhere at the 2013 Comic Con : from shuttle buses which were decorated in “Grimm” fashion, to a packed panel, to the Exotic Tea and Spice Shop set up across from the convention center where fans could have their photo taken in a replica of one of the shows sets.

Stars from the hit NBC series met with members of the press to discuss what we can look forward to in Season 3.

Russell Hornsby says that in Season 3 the stories will be “more involved” In Season 2, creators worked Hornsby’s real life injury into the show and Hornsby says they are always really good about working with the actors on their characters.  “The whole gang now participates (not just Nick) in helping out with the Wesen, they are like the Scooby Gang.”  Hornsby also said that we may see Hank with a new love interest in Season 3.

Claire Coffee who plays bad girl Adalind on the hit show has done all sorts of evil things on the show, including trying to sell her unborn child.  We asked her how much fun it was to be bad, “I highly recommend it!  If you ever have the chance to be bad on a television show where you aren’t actually hurting anyone, you should do it!”

Bree Turner who plays Rosalee on the show says that this year “the bar is raised”.  There is much more action this year and more of it is being done by the actors and not stunt people.  The director really wants to see the actors hanging 40 feet in the air and not have to cut to a shot of a stunt person.”

Reggie Lee’s Sgt. Wu has been through a lot on Grimm.  It seems whenever one of the Wesen attacks one of the gang, Wu is always in the middle.  Reggie Lee recalled shooting a particular episode where his character eats copious amounts of carpet. ” I had rug burn in my mouth the next day!  The carpet on set was part cotton candy, part coconut and part actual carpet.  By the end of the day I had actually eaten a good amount of real carpet.”

Director Norberto Barba says that he is really excited about the character and the storylines in Season 3.  One of the things he likes best about the show is that it is a “Police Procedural in a real city in a real world setting, with a supernatural twist.”

Catch Season 3 of “Grimm” when new episodes start airing October 25th on NBC.

Zachary Levi and his Nerd HQ friends have been raising funds at the 2013 Comic Con for Operation Smile with their popular “Conversations For A Cause” Panels.   The panels are being held this year at Petco Park and are ranging from “Sherlock” with Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and “Riddick” with star Vin Diesel.  The panels, which have sold out in a matter of minutes, have raised thousands of dollars to date for Operation Smile.

On Friday, “True Blood” star and fan favorite Joe Manganiello stopped by the HQ to answer questions for the packed, and mostly female, audience.

Alan Tudyk Copyright Suzanne Philips/CFM

Alan Tudyk Copyright Suzanne Philips/CFM

“Firefly” and “Dollhouse” star and perennial Comic Con favorite Alan Tudyk was the moderator for the panel as usual moderator Zachary Levi was on doctor ordered voice rest pending his broadway opening.  The audience had a number of questions ranging from the pedestrian to the risqué.  Manganiello offered advice to one woman whose daughter is looking to get into acting as a career, and suggested that she get good training (Manganiello himself trained at the prestigious Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh with fellow “True Blood” cast member Michael McMillian).  He remarked that all of the cast members on “True Blood” that are playing werewolves, vampires, fairies and the like all have excellent classical training and that is what makes the show so good.

One audience member wanted to know about the infamous “sock” that the guys use when they are doing nude scenes in the show.  Joe told a funny story about the first time that he went into his trailer to get ready for a nude scene and found on the table 3 different types of undergarments, one was like a brief which made you “look like a Ken doll”, the other was a thong type that closed on the sides with plastic straps that cast-mate Rutina Wesley (who plays Tara on the show) talked him out of as the straps would snap if you moved the wrong way, and just a sheath that “you put on over your business and it fastens with a drawstring”. Manganiello opted for the sheath.

Manganiello also brought his popular Alcide’s Wolf Pack stickers again this year which he passed out to the crowd and have become a collectors item.

Today’s panel raised over $5,000 for Operation Smile and Comic-Con Attendees can catch Joe Manganiello again tomorrow when he participates in a panel discussion and autograph signing for “True Blood”.

Comic Con Goes Crazy For Sherlock

Sherlock at Comic Con 2013The first official day of Comic Con usually starts the insanity-filled 5 day experience,  and 2013 is no exception.  The buzzword on everyone’s lips today was – Sherlock.

The BBC America booth on the exhibit floor, which carries merchandise for “Sherlock” as well as a huge display for “Dr. Who” and items for their new show “Orphan Black”, saw lines of 300 people snaking around the hall who were all waiting to buy merchandise.

Sherlock at Comic Con 2013

Fans camped out overnight to gain entrance to Ballroom 20 for the 2:15pm Sherlock panel which featured Creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and Executive Producer Sue Vertue.  Stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were unavailable to be at the con, but sent along a hilarious videotaped message, which can be found on the Entertainment Weekly website.

Sherlock at Comic Con 2013

Season 3 of Sherlock will see three great new episodes which involve Sherlock’s re-entry into the lives of friends who believed him to be dead as well as the wedding of Dr. Watson, among other revelations.

Sherlock at Comic Con 2013

The first episode of the season will be called “The Empty Hearse” and is loosely based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s story “The Empty House”. The return of Sherlock and the impact that this has on John Watson will be the focal point of the story.  In the original Conan Doyle stories, Watson forgives Sherlock and they move on quite quickly.  This is not the case in “Sherlock” Season 3. The creators wanted to show how Sherlock’s faked suicide affected his friends and extended family. In the first episode of the new season, the reunion of John and Sherlock goes “On and on” says Mofatt. “It was amazing to watch when we were filming it”.

Mark Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft Homes in the show, says that ” Mycroft will turn up in season 3 quite a lot.  I can’t say what or how without giving a lot away.” But fans of the character will not be disappointed.

Sherlock at Comic Con 2013

Both Moffatt and Gatiss are huge fans of the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  When asked what he would say if he had the opportunity to speak to Conan Doyle today, Gatiss says “We owe everything to Conan Doyle.  He is possibly the best writer of short stories ever so I would simply say, Thank You.”

All three panelists expressed great love and admiration for the shows stars.  They also revealed that many people would be surprised on first meeting the pair if they thought that they would be like their on-screen characters.  “Benedict is actually the goofy one and Martin is the sardonic one, which is almost opposite of their characters”, stated Mark Gatiss. “Benny is very puppy-ish and bumbling and Martin is very earthy.” Even though both men have become huge film stars since they stated filming the first series, they are both well-loved by cast and crew.  “We have the two biggest British film stars at the current time in our show” says Moffatt.

Executive producer Sue Vertue confirmed that there will be a Series 4, they just have to work out the details of when they will go into production.  Steven Moffatt said that the “tradition in television is to make a lot of episodes over a short amount of time which eventually makes everyone burn out.  We want to make a lot of episodes over a long period of time so that no one gets sick of it. The characters will get older and the audience will be getting older with them as well.”

The panel received a standing ovation and a great reception from the huge number of fans in attendance.  Sherlock, Series 3 will start airing in early 2014 on BBC and PBS.

Walk&Talk Azores Festival the most exotic and genuine public art destination.

Walk&Talk, the International Public Art Festival which is shaking the artistic community and turning the Azores into an excellence destination for creative tourists from around the world, returns through July 27th. Alexandre Farto (Vhils), Mark Jenkins, Okuda and REMED, are four among the 80 creators, from 11 nationalities, who have already participated in the festival and signed some of the 62 interventions that currently give São Miguel island the status of living and democratic museum, mapping the Azores in the new creative regions script.
Liqen Jakala (ES), W&T 2012
Each year Walk&Talk Azores Festival gathers new talents and prominent contemporary art scene names that found in the exoticism and authenticity of this Atlantic archipelago an exceptional context to develop their work, sharing genuine cultural and co‐creation experiences with the local community. Thanks to the growing Walk&Talk creative dynamics, besides the famous “Furnas” and “Sete Cidades” lagoon, today São Miguel island has also a public art museum, where visitors and Azorean can freely enjoy a circuit composed of over 62 contemporary artistic interventions.

Mural painting, installation, sculpture, dance, music, video ‐ from visual arts to performing arts and architecture, Walk&Talk Festival is based on an artistic residency model that encourages creation in permanent dialogue with public space. For this year’s edition the festival promoters promise to reinforce the bold, genuine and collaborative features that define the event, where they want to gather more than 50 artists. Walk&Talk Festival was founded in 2011 by two young Azorean, Diana Sousa (27 years old) and Jesse James (25 years old), is part of the growing Azorean cultural momentum and has turn into one of its most active agents by positioning the region as a must‐visit destination for artists and people who follow the international art scene.

Besides being an emerging event on the international art calendar, Walk&Talk Azores is a peer gathering, relaxed and collaborative art event that allows participant creators to discover the Azores in an unprecedented way ‐ as transdisciplinary and artistic contamination context, which transforms the visit into a real creative tourism experience. People who didn’t have the Azores as a priority destination get the opportunity to discover a unique environment and become spontaneous ambassadors of their creative experiences.

A case study to follow: Walk&Talk Azores Festival has particular relevance because it illustrates the transformation of the tourism image of a territory, from its “disneyfied” projection, based on the reproduction of conventional tourist codes and icons, throughout creative innovation by promoting genuine experiences, as rich and diverse as its visitor’s interests.

Crowdfunding campaign: Until July 4th Walk&Talk Azores is promoting a funds raising campaign to help support this year’s festival edition. Fans and followers may contribute with donations starting at 10 euro’s to help build and improve its production and artistic program, that will gather over 50 Portuguese and foreign artists in São Miguel island. Big fans, with donations over 500 euro’s, can see
their names drawn by an artist in a huge mural or be guests of honor, entitled to a special creative tourism package that includes travel and accommodation, during the festival. For more information and contributions, please visit:‐talk‐public‐art‐festival.

A new miniseries and more spin out of the blockbuster Star Trek Into Darkness!

This October, STAR TREK: KHAN will show intrepid readers just how the master villain of Star Trek Into Darkness became the intergalactic menace seen in the blockbuster film. Over six thrilling issues, Khan’s secrets will be unlocked and the origin of evil will finally be uncovered.

Helmed by the veteran Star Trek team of writer Mike Johnsonand artist Claudia Balboni, the series will be overseen by the film’s screenwriter, Roberto Orci.

“We’re traveling back in time to show Khan’s rise to power and give fans their first look at the legendary Eugenics Wars,” says Johnson. “As the series unfolds we will see the events that led to Khan leaving Earth aboard the Botany Bay, and then jump forward to witness his awakening in the future by Admiral Marcus.”

“Much like the way the Star Trek: Countdown comic book and our follow-up Nero miniseries helped flesh out that character after the first Star Trek movie,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “Khan will add dimension and depth to this new iteration one of the most classic villains in all of Star Trek lore.”

In addition to KHAN, the only place to continue the epic story of J.J Abrams’ Star Trek film universe is in the pages of IDW Publishing’s ongoing Star Trek series. Also available is the collection of STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS, the exclusive prequel mini-series leading into the hit film.

If that weren’t enough, the full run of the STAR TREK ongoing series has been filled with “Easter eggs” leading in to the new film! Fans without possession of a secret-unlocking tricorder are urged to pore over the first twenty issues of Star Trek.

As Johnson says, “Now that Into Darkness is in theaters, fans reading the ongoing series from issue #1 will pick up on details, both specific and thematic, that set up the movie and the stories that follow it.”

STAR TREK: KHAN is a licensed product of CBS Consumer Products.

The ongoing missions of the starship Enterprise continue throughout the year, only from IDW!

New Starship Foundation’s exhibit, which appears at the San Diego Convention Center Located at Booth 3921, from July 17-21, 2013, provides Trekkies with their first opportunity to see the organization’s fully-restored Captain’s chair from Enterprise-D.  The Foundation will grant special access to members of the media and celebrities wishing to use chairs, computers and other props from the bridge set for interviews, on-camera segments and photo opportunities.  This latest prop is a Paramount built replica chair famously used by Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard, commanding officer of the USSEnterprise-D, during the entire seven-season run of the show.  Picard’s chair joins an already robust collection of restored Paramount props from Star Trek: TNG, including chairs & computers used by Commander William Riker and counselor Deanna Troi (played by Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis, respectively).  Fans of the series will be able to photograph themselves sitting in all three chairs, as well as interacting with several parts of the Enterprise-D bridge set.  “We’re really excited to bring die-hard fans this chance to interact with fully-functioning, life-sized pieces of the Enterprise NCC-1701-D,” says New Starship Foundation CEO Huston Huddleston.  “Everyone working on theEnterprise-D Bridge Restoration is a lifelong Trekkie, so we can’t wait to share the joy and hard work that’s gone into restoring the greatest ship of the Federation Starfleet.”

On Saturday, July 20, New Starship Foundation will host a panel featuring several members of the Star Trek universe.  Taking place at 5:30 p.m. in San Diego Convention Center Room 26AB, the panel will discuss all things Star Trek, as well as the New Starship Foundation’s plans to take the Enterprise-D Bridge Restoration on tour to several cities across the United States and internationally.  The group will also reveal details regarding the Foundation’s plan to create a permanent Hollywood Sci-Fi Museum.  Among the list of confirmed panelists are screenwriter & novelist David Gerrold; author Larry Nemecek and makeup artist, illustrator & visual effects artist Doug Drexler.  Several surprise guests will also join the panel, making it an unforgettable experience for all Trekkies in attendance.
